Horizons is an installation by noted Icelandic artist Steinunn Thórarinsdóttir. The exhibition includes 12 androgynous, life-sized iron figures in the KMA’s South Garden. Each is unique in pose and expression, and has a polished glass band inserted in its torso. The artist explains this juxtaposition of glass and iron, “The color of the iron signifies their primal quality—as if they are emerging from the earth” while “Glass as a material has a lot of different connotations. It can be fragile, yet dangerous. It can be translucent, or solid . . . It's like water, but also like air.”

Thorarinsdottir has exhibited widely in Europe, Japan, and Australia over the last 30 years, as well as in the United States, where Horizons has been traveling for the past three years. The installation is featured in the documentary Horizons by independent filmmaker Frank Cantor, which won the CINE Special Jury Award in Washington as the best documentary of 2008. Thórarinsdóttir’s work is held by collectors worldwide, and she has been commissioned by both the Icelandic and English governments for major sculptural installations. She has received numerous awards including the Order of the Falcon by the President of Iceland in 2009.

Athens Community Theater will present GUYS & DOLLS – a Musical Fable of Broadway by Frank Loesser on February 16 – 26, 2012 in the Sue E. Trotter Theater at The Arts Center in Athens.

Guys & Dolls is considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy. Set in Damon Runyon’s mythical New York City, the musical features a cast of 30+ singers, dancers, actors and a live orchestra introducing a cast of vivid characters who have become legends in the canon: Sarah (Brittany Duggan), the upright “mission doll”, out to reform the evildoers of Times Square; Sky Masterson (Perry Philpott), the slick, high-rolling gambler who woos her on a bet and ends up falling in love; Adelaide (Sandra Boyd), the chronically ill nightclub performer whose condition is brought on by the fact she’s been engaged to the same man for 14 years; and Nathan Detroit (Art Kimball), her devoted fiancé, always desperate to find a spot for his infamous floating crap game. Guys & Dolls features many of Broadway’s hit songs, including “Luck Be a Lady,” “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat,”, “Fugue for Tinhorns,” and many more.

Guys & Dolls is directed by Melonie Carideo with musical direction by Ellen Kimball.

Show dates are February 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, 25 at 7PM and February 19 and 26 at 2PM. Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for students. Come at 6PM on opening night to roll the dice for prizes. “Dolls” who bring “Guys”on Thursday, February 23rd receive a $3 discount on each Guy’s ticket. Some of the foremost Jazz musicians hailing from the Volunteer State are united
for the first time in a rare and exciting lineup:
Trumpet legend Marvin Stamm has performed and recorded with Frank Sinatra,
Benny Goodman and a Who's Who list of music world celebrities. An artist in constantly
evolution, his performances in duo, trio, quartet, or with symphony orchestra's all over
the US are invariably exciting and imaginative.
Rusty Holloway has exhibited admirable impartiality throughout his diverse career. From Carnegie Hall to music joints of dubious reputation, his virtuosic and
groove-ridden bass playing has won the admiration of fellow musicians and audiences
alike.
Keith Brown, originally from Knoxville, is one of the great treasures of the local jazz scene. In addition to teaching full time at UT where heconducts the University of Tennessee jazz ensemble, Keith can be heard with Boling, Brown,and Holloway at Baker Peter's on Thursday evenings and at Lucille's on Saturdays with Early Bird featuring Donald Brown.
Pianist Bill Swann, from eastern
Tennessee, became serious about musicin high school; in his senior year was playing 3-5 nights a week in nightclubs across Tennessee. After two years on the road with a local band, Bill left the band pursue the study of jazz piano in college. He won an outstanding soloist award at the 1999 Mobile Collegiate Jazz Competition.

The two-day sale takes place at each of Pellissippi State’s four locations—the Pellissippi Campus, Division Street Campus, Magnolia Avenue Campus and Blount County Campus—giving deal-seekers the opportunity to visit one or more of the sales. The selection of items available for purchase at each campus varies.

Most items range in price from 50 cents to approximately $4. Proceeds go to the Pellissippi State Foundation, which supports students by providing scholarships, new technology and equipment.

Join the East Tennessee Historical Society for a luncheon and program with nationally recognized quilt historian Merikay Waldvogel as she shows and tells the stories of fifteen unique folk-art quilts from the collections of the East Tennessee Historical Society.

These one-of-a-kind quilts from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries can best be described as “folk art,” meaning that the quilt makers have deviated from the traditional ways of making a quilt. The turning will feature a variety of quilt designs, including floral appliqué, pictorials, and written messages. Attendees will enjoy a rare opportunity to view and compare these important quilts in side-by-side display.

The luncheon is an opportunity for ETHS to share with the public a portion of its rarely seen collection of 114 quilts, while also raising funds to assist with textile preservation. The cost of the luncheon is $25 for the program and a boxed lunch. Reservations are required, as space is limited. The UTK Print Club is pleased to host Karen Kunc for a public lecture on Thursday February 16 at 7pm in Art-Architecture room 109. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Karen Kunc, has been making unique bookworks and limited editioned artists books for over 25 years. Kunc lives and works in Nebraska where she is Cather Professor of Art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Kunc was recognized as the 2007 Printmaker Emeritus by the Southern Graphics Council Conference, and she received the Sally R. Bishop Faculty Fellowship from the Center for Book Art in 2005. Bobbie Crews has an exhibit of her work as the “2012 Dogwood Arts Resident Artist” in the Dogwood Arts offices at 602 S. Gay St. The show is on display from now through the 25th of May, Monday through Friday 8:30 – 5:00. Artist’s reception will be on Friday March 9th from 5 – 7 pm.

Black History Month celebrations are ongoing throughout February for all four Pellissippi State Community College campuses. All events are free and open to the public:
