Blount County Library: Civil War Music

  • April 9, 2012

Category: History, heritage and Music

A "Civil War Music" concert will be performed by Conny Ottway on Monday, April 9, at the Blount County Public Library. As the final program of this spring's Community Civil War series, the program will be filled with music that is well known and loved and will include some history of the songs and how they were used.

Ottway encourages her audiences to sing with her, as many people knew the music in their youth. She will also play fiddle tunes that were popular during those days - music that helped to ease the pain of the daily hardships the War created. One of Ottway's goals in her private music lessons is to keep this music alive for the youth of today.

This concert is the final event in a series of Civil War presentations offered by a community committee who met for several months to commemorate the sesquicentennial of the Civil War.
Free and open to the public, the program is at the Blount County Public
Library, located at 508 N. Cusick Street, Maryville.

Redline Gallery: "Menagerie" Works by Charles Keiger

  • April 7, 2012 — April 30, 2012
  • reception April 7, 7:00 - 9:00 PM

Category: Exhibitions, visual art

Red Line Gallery will be hosting an Artist Reception & Exhibition featuring works by Atlanta-based artist, Charles Keiger, entitled “Menagerie”.

The word "menagerie" was the trigger for the imagery in Charles Keiger's latest paintings. The concept of a circus has always been intriguing; wild animals, acrobats and clowns all coexisting in an isolated environment, complete with an audience. In some ways this concept is similar to a painting; Take raw materials (skillfully manipulated), confine them to a designated space and defy the laws of nature. The rules of the world do not apply to what happens on a stage or a picture plane. You are shown an alternate reality and maybe, just for an instant, the viewer, through their imagination, is a mental participant in the impossible.

The Artist Reception will be held on Saturday, April 7th from 7-9pm & the show will hang through the end of April.

Red Line Gallery is located at 11519 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37934 (Campbell Station & Kingston Pike).
