Dogwood Arts Festival: Art in Public Places

Art in Public Places Knoxville is a monumental installation of large-scale outdoor sculptures by regionally and nationally acclaimed artists. The sculptures enliven downtown Knoxville as well as McGhee Tyson Airport. Awards for the Art in Public Places exhibition will be presented by world-acclaimed sculptor, Allen Peterson. The ceremony will take place at 5:30 p.m. at Nouveau Classics on 128 South Gay Street on April 6.

Dogwood Arts Festival: Regional Fine Art Exhibition

The Regional Fine Art Exhibition showcases the finest artists residing in our region. Progressive emerging and professional artists exhibit their work in a variety of genres to showcase the creativity and talent that our region offers. The exhibition will be at the Emporium Center for Arts and Culture, 100 South Gay Street, Knoxville, TN 37902. The opening reception is from 5-9 p.m. The award ceremony begins at 8 p.m. on April 6.

The Student Art Exhibition and competition features the creative works of Knoxville’s next generation of artists from area schools K-12. Awards and scholarships are presented to encourage further development of these art students’ artistic aptitude. Awards will be presented at 7 p.m. on April 6. Clayton Center for the Arts – 502 E. Art Market Gallery: Annual Members Auction

A Dogwood Arts Festival Featured Event, this silent auction gives gallery visitors the opportunity to bid on original artworks by gallery artists for a chance to buy them at a fraction of their value. Approximately 40-50 items will be available for bidding. The public is invited to a First Friday Reception on April 6 from 5:30-9 pm with complimentary refreshments and live music. This will be the first day of bidding on auction items and the reception offers the opportunity for the public to meet many of the gallery’s member-artists as well.

A1 LabArts and The Center for Creative Minds is happy to announce Fruit of the Vine: Art from the personal collections of John Fairstein and Ardyce Lee. The exhibition, which will run from April 6-14, will showcase paintings, drawings, sculpture and photographs by artists from East Tennessee and Ohio, all in the collection of Fairstein and Lee.

UT Gardens Plant Sale

Spring is in the air, and now is the time to shop for some unique and cutting-edge plants for your garden. We have the new Drift Roses that are disease free and flower all summer. These roses grow only 1.5 feet tall and 3 feet wide. We also have the new Itoh peonies that produce up to 50 blooms! There will also be an incredible selection of native and hybrid azaleas and viburnums.
The University of Tennessee Gardens is holding its spring plant sale on Saturday, April 7, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A preview sale will be held on Friday, April 6, from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. for all UT employees, Gardens volunteers, and Friends of the UT Gardens. Friends will also receive a 10 percent discount on all purchases.
If you are not yet a Friend of the Gardens, you will be able to sign up for a membership at the preview sale and receive the member discount on plants.
All proceeds will benefit the UT Gardens. The sale will be located at the UT Gardens on the UT agriculture campus in Knoxville located on Neyland Drive adjacent to the UT Veterinary Hospital.
East Tennessee History Center: From the Vaults: Iconic Moving Images of East Tennessee

Vintage footage is captivating no matter the subject. But when East Tennessee herself is major character, local audiences are in for a delightful treat. The Tennessee Archive of Moving Image and Sound, East Tennessee Historical Society, and the Knox County Public Library's McClung Historical Collection are partnering to present a free monthly film series on First Fridays displaying the rare, and often unique, local moving images collected and preserved at the East Tennessee History Center. Also featured in the series will be a variety of art exhibitions by local East Tennessee artists Amy Campbell, Diana Rogers, and Laramie Payne. All programs are held at the East Tennessee History Center and are free to the public.

“I Open My Mouth and Let ‘er Flyâ€: The Pappy ‘Gube’ Beaver Story
The world premier of a documentary produced by indie filmmakers Dwight Swanson and Robert Salyer features the story behind the life and times of long-time Knoxville preacher Parlan “Pappy Gube†Beaver. Beaver, now 92 years old, formerly worked with grocer and country music impresario Cas Walker, and has been on local radio airwaves for over 70 years. Chet Atkins’ first commercial recordings were made with Beaver for Capitol Records during the late 1940s.
Live Music: Join Americana music roots musicians Wade Hill and the legendary Hogman for a program of live ole-time music and vintage film clips celebrating the life and career of East Tennessee’s own Pappy “Gube†Beaver!
About the artist: Maryville-based artist Amy Campbell’s exhibit “Music & Culture, East, Tennessee folk portraits†portrays in a simple and direct style her love and respect of present and historic folks of our region. Knox Heritage: 2nd Annual The Salvage Show

The exhibition and reception is one night only and will be held on the second floor of 36 Market Square, the newly renovated building on the northeast corner of the Square. The Salvage Show will feature functional design pieces by nineteen local artists, architects, students, and designers. Each work will incorporate architectural salvage from the Knox Heritage Salvage Room to promote the creative re-use of historic building materials. All work will be for sale the night of the opening and proceeds will benefit Knox Heritage.
Photos of work from the Salvage Show will be available to view on Monday, April 9 at www.knoxheritage.org/node/346. Any works not sold at the exhibition will be for sale until May 6 via the Knox Heritage Etsy Shop located at http://www.etsy.com/people/KnoxHeritage. The artists and designers included in the 2012 Salvage Show are Ryan Burgess, Laurence Eaton, Michelle Garlington, Ethiel Garlington, Christina Geros, Krista Graves, Briena Harmening, Christopher King, Forrest Kirkpatrick, Per-Ole Lind, Dale Mackey, Sara Martin, Beth Meadows, John Phillips, Brian Pittman, Shawn Poynter, Gregory Spaw, Jessie Van der Laan, and Brian Wagner.
The Knox Heritage Salvage Program exists to keep historic building materials out of the landfill. It primarily functions to provide period-appropriate materials for historic building and home owners but also serves creative people wanting to breathe new life into old items. All salvaged materials are donated and every donation is tax deductible.

Celebration for the 100 Block of Gay Street! The 100 Block Association proudly announces Art on the Block!, a new celebration of visual art, movement, music and more along the 100 Block of Gay Street and Summit Hill Park in downtown Knoxville.
The 100 Block of Gay Street (also known as the Arts District) provides an ideal setting for the public and children to enjoy this free event, which includes aerial acrobatics, fire twirlers, hoop dancers, a drum lines, artists doing live painting, gallery openings, and more. Ample parking is accessible in the Jackson Avenue lot under the Gay Street viaduct.
A schedule of events is as follows:
6:00-7:30 PM - Aerial acrobatics in Summit Hill Park
7:30-9:00 PM - Fire twirlers and hoop dancers
7:30-9:00 PM - Drum line performance

Other events taking place on the 100 Block on April 6 include the opening reception for the Dogwood Arts Festival's Regional Fine Arts Exhibition at the Emporium Center; "Nexus 2012", a showcase of contemporary sculpture at UT Downtown Gallery; and recent works by Alex Merchant at Gallery 1010.

First Friday at URBhana

Join us at URBhana for artwork by local Painter, Lauren Karnitz (www.laurenkarnitz.com) and music by Steff Mahan (www.steffmahan.com).
This April 6th, URBhana is participating along with the 100 Block Association, in First Friday and in conjunction with The Dogwood Art Festival opening. URBhana will be showing the work of local artist, Lauren Karnitz, and will have musical performance from Nashville musician, Steff Mahan. * As a special note; Tune in, or go on down to the Visitor's Center and WDVX, at Noon, for the Blue Plate Special to hear Steff Mahan perform live.
As part of the Dogwood Arts Festival opening night, URBhana and the 100 Block Association, has also helped to coordinate live performers in the Summit Hill park, at the corner of Summit Hill and Gay Street. Aerialists will be performing from 6-730, there will also be drummers, hoopers, fire spinners, live music and, live art being created! Local artists, Cyntha Markert and Brian Parker will be painting on the street right next to URBhana!
URBhana's founder, Angela Howard has been working hard, as a board member and events committee member, to promote the 100 block as the Arts and Cultural district of Knoxville. Come Join in the Celebration.
