May 29-June 29, Art Market Galley of Knoxville is pleased to present an exhibit of recent works by Linda Sullivan of Oak Ridge and Rod Fleming of Powell.

Linda Sullivan, who holds an MFA in ceramics, creates functional and sculptural vessels out of stoneware and porcelain clays. Inspired by various landscapes and drawing on her strong background in painting, she employs a unique glazing process by pouring and overlapping her glazes in a purposeful, painterly way to depict landscape imagery. She says, “viewers of my work often verbalize about being reminded of landscapes from their own personal experiences and [share with me] the memories that the imagery evokes.”

Landscape painter Rod Fleming owes his interest in watercolor to the influence of the late Hubert Shuptrine. A native of Arkansas, Rod originally used the Ozarks as inspiration for his paintings and now his landscape subjects are from the Great Smoky Mountains. He says that “the sights and sounds of flowing water always hold my interest for the next painting.”

A First Friday Reception for the exhibit is planned for June 1 from 5:30-9 pm with complimentary refreshments and live music.

May 29-June 1 Bennett Galleries and Community School of the Arts host Side by Side. Thursday, May 31 from 3-6pm: Open House Preview. Friday, June 1 from 5-8pm: Reception and Silent Auction. Students ages 10 through 18 from the Community School of the Arts are paired with professional artists in their studios for working apprenticeships throughout the school year. All proceeds from the silent auction benefit the Community School of the Arts, a non-profit after-school program that provides free instruction in the visual and performing arts to under-served youngsters from Knox and surrounding counties.

Two years ago some of the world’s most celebrated combat photographers decided to pool their work for “Conflict Zone,” a collection of images from the front lines of wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Pellissippi State Community College hosts this acclaimed exhibit May 23-31 in recognition of Memorial Day, which is May 28. The photographs will be on display in the Bagwell Center for Media and Art gallery, and there is no charge.

“Conflict Zone” is a project of the Independence Fund, founded by Steve Danyluk, a U.S. combat veteran and Marine. The all-volunteer Independence Fund is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to “provide the tools, therapies and guidance that those severely injured in the War on Terror were otherwise not receiving.” The exhibit first opened at the Chicago Cultural Center on May 7, 2011.

“Conflict Zone” was inspired by Joao Silva, a New York Times photographer who lost both legs after stepping on a land mine in October 2010 in Afghanistan. The images he took in the seconds after stepping on the mine are included in the collection.

The Bagwell Center is on the Hardin Valley Campus, 10915 Hardin Valley Road. Exhibit hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays or by appointment.

The Museum of East Tennessee History is located in the East Tennessee History Center at 601 South Gay Street in downtown Knoxville.

The Town of Farragut Arts Council presents Paul Tinnel as the featured artist for May and June. Located at the Farragut Town Hall, his exhibit showcases handmade wood bowls created by the art of segmented bowl turning.

Tinnel, a Lenoir City, Tenn. native, is an Air Force veteran and is retired from Y-12 in Oak Ridge. Having always had an interest in building and repairing, he began woodworking as a hobby in 1986. Over time, Tinnel has produced a wide variety of items, both decorative and functional, including traditionally turned, solid wood bowls. Around 2008, he developed an interest in the challenge and art of segmented bowl turning. With approximately 100 bowls now to his credit, Tinnel continues to produce a variety of bowl styles using a number of different wood species. His work is also a featured exhibit at The Town Framery in Farragut.

The Farragut Town Hall is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located at 11408 Municipal Center Drive directly across from the Farragut Branch Post Office.

Graduating seniors in the School of Art and the College of Architecture and Design are honored each year when selected by committee as the top students among their peers.

The Knoxville Museum of Art presents Streetwise: Masters of 1960s Photography May 4-August 5, 2012.

This exhibition highlights the work of a group of eight American photographers who focused their lenses on the rapid social and political changes that transformed the nation during the turbulent 1960s. The featured images present a realistic, sometimes dire, view of America surveying the “outlaw culture” of bikers and chain gangs, Boston’s red light district known as the Combat Zone, Black Panthers, the gritty streets and neighborhoods of New York, the politically charged South, and fringe communities and subcultures around the country.

The public is invited to a preview party Thursday, May 3 from 5:30-7:30pm. This event is free and includes a gallery talk and cash bar.

Bliss Home will feature Bill Timm for May First Friday. A reception will be held at Bliss Home, 29 Market Square, from 6 to 9 p.m., Friday May 4th.

Bill Timm is a metal sculptor residing in Knoxville, TN, but is from traces his roots to the steel capital fo the world: Pittsburgh, PA. For ten years, Bill has created abstract and realistic sculptures from found objects. Bill is a self taught abstract and metal fabricator who has received several regional and national awards for his sculptures.

Bill’s art is viewable beginning May 4th and will remain through the end of the month.
