Historic Ramsey House: Skirmish on the Holston

Historic Ramsey House and the Civil War Reenactors of East Tennessee will be hosting the reenactment of the Skirmish on the Holston on May 12th and 13th, 10am-4pm both days. Admission is $5 per person, children under 12 are free. Mothers accompanied by children will have free entry on Sunday, Mother’s Day.

This is an educational event the whole family can enjoy. “Our focus this year is on teaching the history of the Civil War period in the Knoxville area”, said Judy LaRose Museum Administrator for Historic Ramsey House. There will be reenactors in the Historic Home telling stories of the women who lived through this difficult period, including, portions of the journal of Margaret Crozier Ramsey, who told of her suffering and uncertainty during her exile form Knoxville.

Outside one can witness the daily life of the soldiers, their battles, their weapons, their medical care and many other aspects of the war that both sides had to endure. The Daughters of the Confederacy, Tellico Unit will entertain a Ladies Tea and Fashion Show on Saturday at 11am. The Children of the Confederacy will host period games for all to take part in. There will be period crafts for children sponsored by the East Tennessee Reenactors. Food vendors will be available both days.

The Bijou Jubilee! is an annual celebration of the historic Bijou Theatre and serves as the primary fundraiser supporting the ongoing operation and preservation of this spectacular venue.
The Bijou Jubilee! 2012 will take place on Saturday, May 12 from 7-11 p.m. in the Krutch Park Extension under a magical, big top tent with an air of vaudeville charm mixed with southern style. Mabry-Hazen House: Sons of Confederate Veterans / Bethel Cleanup Day

Sponsored by the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Longstreet-Zollicoffer Camp 87. Volunteers will gather at the Bethel Cemetery in the morning to help beautify the grounds. Over 1,600 Confederate soldiers lay at rest in the historic Bethel Cemetery. Volunteers are encouraged to bring yard tools and wear appropriate clothing. Vestival is one of Knoxville’s finest yearly events with two stages of music, children’s activities, arts, crafts, and more. The festival spawned the birth of the Candoro Arts and Heritage Center which now operates Vestival. Vestival is held on the grounds of the Candoro Marble Company and raises funds to preserve and restore the Candoro Marble Building, now listed in the National Historic Registry.

U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre: Coheed and Cambria

Known for cohesive concept albums that follow a science fiction narrative, Coheed and Cambria have released five studio efforts and three live albums since their beginnings in New York in 1995. An extensive touring schedule garnered further critical acclaim and a network of fans spanning across the country, and as they embark on their latest set of live dates fans can continue to expect the energy and unique sound the band is known for. The show reaches the U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre on Saturday, May 12.

Fountain City Art Center: 9th Annual Garden Party Luncheon

This year’s 9th Annual Garden Party Luncheon and Auction will be held on Saturday, May 12, beginning at 11 AM. Reservations for the luncheon and auction can be made by phone, email, or by coming by the Center. We’d be happy to mail invitations to anyone who asks. The luncheon is just $35 per person, paid in advance. The proceeds go a long way toward funding operations at the Art Center, a 501(c )3 nonprofit organization. The site of the luncheon is the incredibly beautiful Gardens of Ginger and Bill Baxter as featured in the March edition of Southern Living! Musical entertainment this year will be provided by the Ben Maney Trio; gourmet sandwiches will be provided by the Creamery Park Grill courtesy of Jeff Patin.

Appalachian Arts Craft Center Annual Plant Sale and Book-Signing . The Appalachian Arts Craft Center in Norris will hold its annual Plant Sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, May 12, at the center. Wildflowers, bushes, ferns, herbs and other plants will be available. This is a great way to get locally hardy plants at a reasonable price. There will also be a book-signing by local author Kathleen Fearing from 2-4 p.m. on the same day.
