Monroe Area Council for the Arts: Matt Belsante: A Modern Jazz Singer
Category: Music
At 26, Matt Belsante performs like a seasoned entertainer well beyond his years. Maybe it was the old Sinatra records that he listened to with his Grandfather. Or maybe it was the steady diet of Coltrane, Ellington, Basie and Fitzgerald he was fed at home. Whatever it was, the Nashvillemusic industry took notice following a performance with the Nashville Jazz Orchestra when Matt sang as if he was channeling Sinatra himself. While attending VanderbiltUniversity’s Blair School of Music, Matt was recruited to sing for the Blair Big Band. Matt’s latest recording, “Blame It On My Youth,†a series of covers of classic Jazz and Big Band standards, was released to rave reviews. From his Grandfather’s lap to the stage, television and the web, Matt’s musical journey is only just beginning. Keep your eyes and ears on this young crooner as he continues his rise to the top! www.mattbelsante.com

Category: Fine Crafts
The Town of Farragut Arts Council presents Paul Tinnel as the featured artist for May and June. Located at the Farragut Town Hall, his exhibit showcases handmade wood bowls created by the art of segmented bowl turning.
Tinnel, a Lenoir City, Tenn. native, is an Air Force veteran and is retired from Y-12 in Oak Ridge. Having always had an interest in building and repairing, he began woodworking as a hobby in 1986. Over time, Tinnel has produced a wide variety of items, both decorative and functional, including traditionally turned, solid wood bowls. Around 2008, he developed an interest in the challenge and art of segmented bowl turning. With approximately 100 bowls now to his credit, Tinnel continues to produce a variety of bowl styles using a number of different wood species. His work is also a featured exhibit at The Town Framery in Farragut.

Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event
The Knoxville Museum of Art presents Streetwise: Masters of 1960s Photography May 4-August 5, 2012.
This exhibition highlights the work of a group of eight American photographers who focused their lenses on the rapid social and political changes that transformed the nation during the turbulent 1960s. The featured images present a realistic, sometimes dire, view of America surveying the “outlaw culture†of bikers and chain gangs, Boston’s red light district known as the Combat Zone, Black Panthers, the gritty streets and neighborhoods of New York, the politically charged South, and fringe communities and subcultures around the country.
The public is invited to a preview party Thursday, May 3 from 5:30-7:30pm. This event is free and includes a gallery talk and cash bar.
The museum is located in downtown Knoxville at 1050 World’s Fair Park and is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday 10am–5pm, and Sunday 1pm-5pm. Admission and parking are free. For more information, contact Angela Thomas at 865.934.2034 or visit www.knoxart.org.
