The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new group exhibition featuring six regional artists opening Friday, July 6, at 5:00 PM in the Balcony of the Emporium Center:

Evelyn M. Bryant (Townsend) – Figurative and whimsical equine sculptures
Dawn Hawkins (Powell) – Acrylic and watercolor abstracts
J. Austin Jennings (Dayton, OH) – A combination of bold acrylic paint and cut-paper collage that takes mixed media to a new level

Mary Klopfer (Fort Wayne, IN) – Charcoal and graphite drawings

The group exhibition will be displayed in the Balcony at the Emporium Center, 100 S. Gay Street, from July 6-27, 2012. An opening reception will take place as part of First Friday activities on July 6 from 5:00-9:00 PM with complimentary hors d’oeuvres. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM with additional hours on Saturday, July 7, from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM. July 3-29, Art Market Galley of Knoxville is pleased to present an exhibit of recent works by Marie Merritt of Rutledge and Jennifer Lindsay of Knoxville.

Award-winning oil painter Marie Merritt draws inspiration from her native east Tennessee and southern Appalachia. She says “a painting is not about the painter, but the subject” and she hopes that viewers of her paintings are first drawn to the emotion and character depicted in them. Her paintings can be found in public and private collections throughout the US.

Artist Jennifer Lindsay fashions unique, one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces using various beading techniques and imported seed beads, focal beads, semi-precious stones or crystals. She says that she gets her inspiration “from everywhere—architecture, gardens and historical customs.”

A First Friday Reception for the exhibit is planned for July 6 from 5:30-9 pm with complimentary refreshments and live music.

Ages 8-12, Spa Camp
Monday-Tuesday, July 2 and 3 (two days), 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., $50.00

Everyone loves a little luxury! Join us in this twoday class and learn to make your own spa creations! From scrubs and soaps to candles and creams, we'll blend traditional Appalachian techniques with the hottest pampering trends. We'll even add our own special touch to the bags, boxes, containers and jars. This class is not recommended for students with allergies or sensitive skin.

Ages 8-13, Acrylic Canvas Painting, Mixed Media, & painting with a Palette Knife Monday-Friday, July 9-13, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon, $80.00

If you love to draw and paint and try new art mediums this class is for you! During this class students will complete a canvas painting in acrylics. We will explore and create a mixed media collage using different materials, stencils, paint and paper. One of the projects will be to experience painting on a board with molding paste and acrylic paint using a plastic palette knife.

Ages 8-13, Basketry
Monday-Friday, July 9-13m 1:00-4:00 p.m. $80.00
Instructor: Nancy Roberson
Students will use rattan reed to learn basic basketry skills and create individual baskets. Square baskets, round baskets, egg baskets and miniature baskets will all be explored. Basket reed has to be worked wet so expect to get a little wet as well!

Ages 8-15, Introduction to Stained Glass Monday-Friday, July 16-20 (two classes available) 9:00a.m.-12:00 noon or 1:00-4:00 p.m., $115.00
Instructor: L' Jon Papillion
In this class participants will cut, grind and lead glass to make a 8" X 12" stained glass panel. Materials and tools will be supplied. Come learn the ancient art and see the world "through colored glass". L'Jon is a seasoned professional in glass and has been a Knox County teacher for a number of years. For safety, no sandals allowed.

Ages 11-15, Design & Paint a Masterpiece Monday-Friday, July 23-27, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon, $80.00
Instructor: Betty Fortenberry
In this class participants will create a beautiful painting using acrylics. Topics such as shading, watercolor effects, composition and color theory will be discussed and implemented. A beautiful quality painting should be completed at the end of the week.


8-12, Dolls, Dolls and more Dolls
Monday-Friday, July 23-27, 1:00-4:00 p.m. $80.00
Instructor: Nancy Roberson
Learn to make your own simple dolls and playthings. Students will learn to make yarn dolls, corn shuck dolls, hankie dolls, and a small 18" X 18" doll quilt. Basic hand sewing skills will be taught plus some simple embroidery stitches.

Beginning and intermediate students will explore ways to use clay slabs and/or extruded parts alone or in combination to make fun and functional pieces such as cups, vases, trays, boxes and baskets. Students who already know how to throw on the wheel will be encouraged to add thrown components to their slab and extruded pieces. Decorative techniques and glazing will be taught, and pieces will be fired to cone 6. Class includes up to 25 lbs of clay, use of tools, glazes, firing , and independent studio time. (Students may purchase an additional bag of clay from the instructor for $50.00 which also includes glazes and firing fees.

Susan shares her knowledge from Casa Caponetti in the Tuscan countryside with those interested in expanding their own Italian cooking expertise. Students will make two different stuffed ravioli dishes and be provided with a variety of other recipes to create in their own kitchen.

In the intimate portrait of the car, the human element is apparent even when people aren’t readily visible in the work. Character, history, stories. The mystique. Does man end & machine begin? Her most recent body of work is focused on intimate portraits of classic cars much like human portraiture, capturing the character and narrative of that particular automobile, its history, and past lives. She is an intuitive painter, bringing forth the human element in her subjects.

Crews’ work is shown in public, private and corporate collections nationally, locally and abroad. Besides painting fine automotive art, portraits of people, and murals, she runs a weekly life drawing session for other professional artists and is a courtroom sketch artist. One of her passions is to create artwork for women’s issues, especially domestic violence. She holds a BFA from the University Of Tennessee School Of Art, and is represented in Knoxville by “Law’s Interiors and Design”. Bobbie Crews Studio is located in downtown Knoxville in the Emporium Center for Arts & Culture.

The Art Guild at Fairfield Glade is pleased to announce Tom Whitehurst as Artist of the Month of July. Tom is a technological nature photographer and will be exhibiting a vast array of artistic photographs.

The artist does his own printing, matting, and framing and prints on canvas, watercolor, and fine art papers using pigmented ink all of which are Archival. His work tends to be novel and quite original. His artist statement indicates: “I just love being outside and taking photographs of “nature’s beauty”.

Dr. James T. Tanner taught at the University of Tennessee for 30 years, but in the 1930s he spent three years searching for and studying remnant populations of ivory-bills across the swamplands of the South. 2 pm Fermentation Fervor: Three Rivers Market
Did you know that fermentation plays a role in foods from beer and bread to coffee and chocolate? It also allows us to preserve an abundant harvest, access minerals and micronutrients, and better digest our foods. You won't want to miss this opportunity to hear renowned "fermentation experimentalist" Sandor Ellix Katz speak about his work with fermented food and culture. You'll even have a chance to sample fermented foods and to learn about fermenting foods at home. There will be a book signing following the talk. Plant for the Future: Urban Land Scouting for Families
(For families with children going into grades 2-7) This playful and informative workshop is for families interested in getting started gardening and improving their land stewardship skills. We will start plants from seed and cuttings, make seed balls, and help families design a plan for their homes-- whether that is an apartment or acreage. Please wear closed-toe shoes and a hat. (For students going into grades 4-6) This workshop is for students who are interested in the plants, animals, design, and the outdoors. We will be mapping and exploring microclimates as well as discussing how to build and encourage different types of habitat in your neighborhood. 11 am FAMILY PROGRAM: Behind the Scenes with the Ijams Veterinarian
(Ages 5 and up) Get up close and personal with some of Ijams' furred and feathered animal ambassadors! You won't want to miss this unique opportunity to go behind the scenes of our animal care program. You'll get to see how we feed and care for the animals, and you may even have the chance to get nose-to-beak or toe-to-tail with some of our wildlife friends. Due to liability concerns, participants cannot be under 5 years of age. Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a paying adult. 1 - 5 pm SPECIAL EVENT: Hummingbird Festival
Organized by the Knoxville Chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society (KTOS) and Ijams. The festival offers a hummingbird banding demonstration by bander Mark Armstrong, talks by hummingbird experts Bob and Martha Sargent about the tiny birds' life history, and Chris Mahoney about favored backyard plants that hummers love.
Free admission to the vendor fair (arts, crafts, food, plants) and bargain barn
(new or gently used bird and nature related items); $5 admission to the banding demonstration and indoor talks. Children under six, Ijams and KTOS members free. All proceeds go to KTOS and the Ijams education department.

Whether it's a brilliant idea on an old napkin, a beautiful hand-rendered sketch, or a delightfully intricate model, this exhibition will unearth and present the hidden artifacts of the art behind design. It's a rarity that an audience can formally experience the creative intimacy behind Nashville's most influential architects and interior designers.

The exhibition will highlight intriguing blueprints, sketches, photographs, models and various other fine art works by leading architects and designers. These are the ideas and outlets that amount to the aesthetic growth of our city and communities.

This will be Alfred Williams & Company's 5th quarterly, charitable art and design exhibition. 100% of donations and fine art proceeds will benefit Rebuilding Together Nashville, who's volunteers provide free rehabilitation and critical repairs to the homes of low-income Americans. Many of Nashville's flood victims have received significant help from this organization. Let's support them with a $5 suggested donation at the door.

Joining the festivities is Nashville's first mobile boutique, The Trunk as well as The Grilled Cheeserie. 10% of proceeds will benefit Rebuilding Together Nashville.

Athens Area Council for the Arts announces its upcoming exhibit “CLASSWORK: ADULT STUDENTS OF THE ARTS CENTER 2011-12”. Exhibit dates are June 8 – August 24, 2012. AACA has been offering classes in the visual and performing arts at The Arts Center for children and adults since opening in 2005. This exhibit is intended to showcase works by adult students who have taken classes in the past year. A variety of media has been taught by an impressive array of instructors, including this year’s instructors Sandy Brown (watercolors), Joy Merckson (acrylics and drawing), Billie Stevens (stained glass), and Andy Phipps (clay). Many of the students were beginners who had never had a course in their chosen medium, while others have taken many classes at The Arts Center and other venues. A sampling of their works that were either done in class or while taking a class will be on display to show the impact The Arts Center has had on their art. Landscapes, abstracts, portraits, and other subject matter will reveal the extent of their training, as some of the students had never picked up a paint brush before beginning classes here, while others enrolled to improve their skills and explore new directions.

The Arts Center invites you to view this exhibit and be as amazed and as proud as we are by the abundance of talent present in our community. The public, artists, family and friends are also invited to attend the opening reception on Tuesday, June 12, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. The Arts Center instructors and many of the students will be on hand to talk about their experience and their art.
