At the tender age of 20 singer-songwriter Sarah Jarosz may be young, but she's got mature musical repertoire. Her soft, decadently rich vocals and skills on the guitar, mandolin, octave mandolin, and clawhammer banjo have earned her prestigious music festivals slots - Bonnaroo, Telluride and Newport, to name a few - and a Grammy nomination. Jarosz’s virtuosity will be on display on the U.S. Cellular Stage on Wednesday, July 11.

The new book Tennessee Tragedies by Allen R. Coggins is the first such compilation of historical disasters for any state. The comprehensive work ranges widely from floods, earthquakes, heat waves, and tornadoes to mining accidents, fire, labor strikes, transportation crashes, epidemics, Ku Klux Klan violence, race riots, and everything in-between. The lecture by Coggins on July 11 will include a historical overview of the subject and a closer look at some of the more compelling stories, as well as our response to human tragedy. Coggins is a former emergency management specialist and is currently a subcontractor with the Environment, Safety, and Health Office of Oak Ridge Associate Universities. He recently received an “Award of Research Excellence” from the East Tennessee Historical Society. The program is sponsored by 21st Mortgage Corp, and free and open to the public. The lecture will begin at noon at the East Tennessee History Center, 601 S. Gay Street, Knoxville. Guests are invited to bring a “Brown Bag” lunch and enjoy the lecture. Soft drinks will be available.

Bliss Home will feature Callie Farmer for July's First Friday. A reception will be held at Bliss Home, 29 Market Square, from 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, July 6th. Callie is currently working on her MFA in Studio Art and Printmaking at Bradley University in Chicago, Illinois. Callie's most recent work, primarily in intaglio, invites the viewer to see her interpretation of the world through new and creative printing techniques. Callie's work intends to 'show the beauty in the overlooked images all around us.'

The East Tennessee Historical Society and the Tennessee Sampler Survey are pleased to announce the opening of the traveling exhibit, Tennessee Samplers: 19th Century Schoolgirl Embroidery on view now at the Museum of East Tennessee History.

The exhibit will be on view at the East Tennessee History Center, Knoxville, TN, from July 6 through July 29, 2012.

Since 2004, the Tennessee Sampler Survey has been documenting 19th century embroidery across the state. Twenty Tennessee samplers were selected for the exhibit, each from a different county. The exhibit presents the samplers on full-sized panels; the actual samplers are not part of this exhibit due to their fragility. Five text panels, explaining the work of the Tennessee Sampler Survey and the regional characteristics of the samplers, are also part of the exhibit.

The East Tennessee History Center is open 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday; 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, Saturday; and 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm, Sunday. Admission to the Tennessee Samplers exhibit is free. The other exhibits at the Museum of East Tennessee History have an admission fee except for Sunday which is “Family Day” with free admission. Land Portrait - Culture Laboratory Collective - Curated by Brian R. Jobe

Land Portrait features works from members of the Culture Laboratory Collective based upon their relationship with a particular place, landform, landscape, topography, or state of current residence. These pieces, when combined, serve as comprehensive land portraits. Translations of localities can act as reflections of communities continually in flux. The visual statements produced for this exhibition may provide a more complete understanding of who (and where) we are. The value of place and landscape is immeasurable. Memories from places can become etched in our minds and contextualized over time. This exhibit offers a view into a collective memory and re-locates interpretations of place into a public, conversational setting.

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition of artwork by Knoxville artist Derrick Freeman, opening Friday, July 6, at 5:00 PM on the north side of the Balcony at the Emporium Center in Knoxville.

Derrick Freeman is a 21-year old who was diagnosed with autism at age two. At that time, he stopped talking. By the age of three, he began to draw, and it led to his way of commu­nicating with his family. Since that time, he has made outstanding contributions to his community through his gift of art. Derrick’s art is and has been an inspiration to many families who have someone with a disability. Each piece of his art has a unique story to tell, and he has proven that regardless of any disability, each of us has something to give back to our community.

Works by Derrick Freeman will be displayed in the Balcony at the Emporium Center, 100 S. Gay Street, from July 6-27, 2012. Media and subject matter were not stipulated at the outset of this exhibition. The pieces on display, therefore, represent an honest ‘work sample’ from a talented segment of the UT community whose artistic skills might otherwise remain unrecognized outside of their duties as staff members. The exhibitors are: Mike C. Berry, Manager of the UT Downtown Gallery; Jessie Van der Laan, UT Print Shop Tech; and Sarah McFalls and Jennifer Stoneking -Stewart, Ewing Gallery staff.

These four artists currently create work that represents a distortion of the natural landscape and addresses the relationship we often have with the idea of "place." July 3-29, Art Market Galley of Knoxville is pleased to present an exhibit of recent works by Marie Merritt of Rutledge and Jennifer Lindsay of Knoxville.

Award-winning oil painter Marie Merritt draws inspiration from her native east Tennessee and southern Appalachia. She says “a painting is not about the painter, but the subject” and she hopes that viewers of her paintings are first drawn to the emotion and character depicted in them. Her paintings can be found in public and private collections throughout the US.

Artist Jennifer Lindsay fashions unique, one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces using various beading techniques and imported seed beads, focal beads, semi-precious stones or crystals. She says that she gets her inspiration “from everywhere—architecture, gardens and historical customs.”

A First Friday Reception for the exhibit is planned for July 6 from 5:30-9 pm with complimentary refreshments and live music.
