CHILDREN'S PROGRAM: Beginning Urban Land Scouts - Drawing and Observation
(For students going into grades 4-6) This workshop is for students who want to be better urban explorers, artists, authors, designers, or inventors. We will be learning to bind small books, exploring the land around us, and drawing from life -- useful skills for makers of all types. No materials necessary, but pre-registration is required. (Ages 5 and up) Get up close and personal with some of Ijams' furred and feathered animal ambassadors! You won't want to miss this unique opportunity to go behind the scenes of our animal care program. You'll get to see how we feed and care for the animals, and you may even have the chance to get nose-to-beak or toe-to-tail with some of our wildlife friends. Fermentation Fervor: Three Rivers Market
Did you know that fermentation plays a role in foods from beer and bread to coffee and chocolate? It also allows us to preserve an abundant harvest, access minerals and micronutrients, and better digest our foods. You won't want to miss this opportunity to hear renowned "fermentation experimentalist" Sandor Ellix Katz speak about his work with fermented food and culture. You'll even have a chance to sample fermented foods and to learn about fermenting foods at home. There will be a book signing following the talk. Do you think you know much about Shakespeare?
Test your knowledge at SHAKESLOGY! on July 14-15 at the Library

What famous assassin was first known for playing Mark Antony in Shakepeare’s play, Julius Caesar? Which role did Shakespeare himself play in As You Like It? What was the first play performed at the Globe Theatre? Find the answers at Knox County Public Library when the Library hosts Shakesology, a new educational program developed by Tennessee Stage Company in conjunction with Shakespeare on the Square.

Shakesology is two sessions focusing on As You Like It and Julius Caesar, this year’s Shakespeare on the Square productions. The As You Like It session is Saturday July 14 at 2:30 and the Julius Caesar session is Sunday at 2:30. Both sessions will be in the Lawson McGhee Library meeting room.

Led by Dr. Jennifer Horn and TSC Artistic Director, Tom Parkhill, the two and a half hour programs present an in-depth look at the stories behind the plays including how Shakespeare came to write them, critical and public reactions over the centuries, and production histories using videos of historic and/or unusual productions, followed by a talk about this year’s productions. Workshops will end in time for participants to enjoy a leisurely meal before attending the premiere of one of the plays later that evening.

Shakesology starts at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 14 and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 15 in the meeting room at Lawson McGhee Library. Admission is free.

An entertaining evening of the various writings of the Bard, presented during the summer in Market Square. An old blanket or lawn chair is all you need to view the free performances under the stars. Donations of $5 are always welcome. Performed on a rough replica of the new Globe Theatre in London (a reconstruction of Shakespeare’s original theatre), the plays will be presented in the timeless style of Elizabethan Theatre presentations. The Tennessee Stage Company encourages the audience to spend an evening on the Square: do a little shopping, have a nice dinner, see the play and maybe stop by a pub afterward. All of this and more is available on Market Square nightly. So come early and see the Square!

Bliss Home will feature Callie Farmer for July's First Friday. A reception will be held at Bliss Home, 29 Market Square, from 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, July 6th. Callie is currently working on her MFA in Studio Art and Printmaking at Bradley University in Chicago, Illinois. Callie's most recent work, primarily in intaglio, invites the viewer to see her interpretation of the world through new and creative printing techniques. Callie's work intends to 'show the beauty in the overlooked images all around us.'

The East Tennessee Historical Society and the Tennessee Sampler Survey are pleased to announce the opening of the traveling exhibit, Tennessee Samplers: 19th Century Schoolgirl Embroidery on view now at the Museum of East Tennessee History.

The exhibit will be on view at the East Tennessee History Center, Knoxville, TN, from July 6 through July 29, 2012.

Since 2004, the Tennessee Sampler Survey has been documenting 19th century embroidery across the state. Twenty Tennessee samplers were selected for the exhibit, each from a different county. The exhibit presents the samplers on full-sized panels; the actual samplers are not part of this exhibit due to their fragility. Five text panels, explaining the work of the Tennessee Sampler Survey and the regional characteristics of the samplers, are also part of the exhibit.

The East Tennessee History Center is open 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday; 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, Saturday; and 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm, Sunday. Admission to the Tennessee Samplers exhibit is free. The other exhibits at the Museum of East Tennessee History have an admission fee except for Sunday which is “Family Day” with free admission. July 3-29, Art Market Galley of Knoxville is pleased to present an exhibit of recent works by Marie Merritt of Rutledge and Jennifer Lindsay of Knoxville.

Award-winning oil painter Marie Merritt draws inspiration from her native east Tennessee and southern Appalachia. She says “a painting is not about the painter, but the subject” and she hopes that viewers of her paintings are first drawn to the emotion and character depicted in them. Her paintings can be found in public and private collections throughout the US.

Artist Jennifer Lindsay fashions unique, one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces using various beading techniques and imported seed beads, focal beads, semi-precious stones or crystals. She says that she gets her inspiration “from everywhere—architecture, gardens and historical customs.”

A First Friday Reception for the exhibit is planned for July 6 from 5:30-9 pm with complimentary refreshments and live music.
