Knoxville Zoo’s Kritter Kids programs introduce preschoolers to the amazing world of animals with special hands-on learning sessions that are sure to keep them engaged and excited. Offered throughout the fall, Kritter Kids programs are specially designed to appeal to the interests of two through five year-olds. Knoxville Zoo’s Education Department staff will help little animal lovers discover some very interesting animal facts on a kid-friendly level that makes learning fun. Animal visitors also give attendees an up-close introduction to some of the zoo’s animal ambassadors. Sessions are offered for two and three-year olds on Tuesdays, and will be held on September 25th,
October 2nd, 9th,16th and 30th, and November 20th and 27th. Sessions for four and five-year olds will be offered on Saturdays and will be held on October 13th and November 3rd. Programs are held from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. and feature stories, crafts, and visits from zoo animals. A snack and drink are provided, and each child must be accompanied by an adult.

Single sessions are $20 per child or three sessions for $50, and zoo members receive a $5 discount on single sessions and a $10 discount on multiple sessions. Adults attend free with a paid child. All sessions are held indoors, rain or shine, at the zoo’s Tiger Tops building. Preregistration is required and can be made by calling Knoxville Zoo at (865) 637-5331. Pellissippi State Community College marks National Hispanic Heritage Month with celebrations on Sept. 20 and Oct. 12 at the Hardin Valley Campus in West Knoxville.

The Sept. 20 presentation features dance groups performing in the Goins Building College Center. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. It includes the following scheduled performances:
5:15-6 p.m.—Knoxville Argentine Tango Society
6:15-7 p.m.—Academy Ballroom Latin Dance Ensemble
7:15-8:15 p.m.—Pablo Garzon and Serenatta, Romantic Latin Ensemble, of Nashville

On Oct. 12, the Core Ensemble performs its chamber music theatre work “Tres Vidas,” 7-8:30 p.m. at the Clayton Performing Arts Center. Chamber music theatre is a format developed by the Core Ensemble that blends theatrical narrative and chamber music performance.

“Tres Vidas” is a celebration of the life, times and work of three significant Latin American women: painter Frida Kahlo of Mexico, peasant activist Ruffina Amaya of El Salvador and poet Alfonsina Storni of Argentina.

This is an exhibition by hispanic artists that live and work in the United States, particularly in the southeast region and the Knoxville area.

This exhibition shows the diversity of the mediums and styles that these contemporary artists produce in their creative practices while questioning what it means to be a contemporary hispanic artist in the United 'States.

Pencil Pushed: exploring process and boundaries in drawing.
In this exhibition, the word pencil functions simply as a metaphor or symbol for drawing and its activity. The artists selected are known for their drawing or drawing activity as their primary means of expression and have either pushed the material, process, or boundary of conventional drawing. Media included will be video, sculpture, animation, installation, and of course, works on paper. This exhibition is neither a survey nor the definitive grouping of mark-making artists. It is more a conversation about artists who have and continue to explore these regions in drawing. The diversity of the exhibition will favor mid-career artists, but will range from emerging to late.

The second floor Gallery at the U.S. Cellular Stage of the Bijou Theatre is
proud to present an exhibit of fine art photographs of the majestic vistas
and stunning wildlife of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The
exhibit includes prize-winning photos by local photographers Jim Ryan and
Roger Lee.

The purpose of the exhibit is to celebrate the preservation of the Smokies
by showcasing the beauty and wonder of this unique region. The gallery is
open to patrons who attend programs at the Bijou and, during regular
business hours, the general public is invited to view the exhibit.

A special reception to honor these artists and their photography will be
held at the Gallery on Friday, September 7th 5:00 - 7:00PM. The
reception is open to the public.

Jim Ryan is a freelance photographer and graduate of the University of
Tennessee who, for years, has spent his spare time on the trails of the
Smokies collecting images and video of their unspoiled beauty. Roger Lee
has photographed America's national parks extensively and has been honored
with multiple awards for his nature photography. Both photographers make
their home in East Tennessee and are committed to the enhancement and
continued preservation of the Great Smoky Mountains.

September 4-30, Art Market Gallery of Knoxville is pleased to present an exhibit of recent works by Mary Ann Valvoda of Loudon and Jen Hamilton of Knoxville.

Award-winning watercolorist Mary Ann Valvoda will be exhibiting a collection of her recent works. Mary Ann studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art and is a Signature Member of the Ohio and Tennessee Watercolor Societies as well at the Knoxville and Southern Watercolor Societies. In her more recent works, she is "excited about using pigments to flow across the paper, yet trying to maintain control of the final appearance of the painting." She has works in private collections throughout the US.

Artist Jen Hamilton creates her mixed media sculptures from recycled objects such as bicycle parts, dismantled electronics, colored wire and found scraps of metal and plastic. She says that she really enjoys "reusing objects from the the waste stream, and transforming them into objects of value and desire."

A First Friday Reception for the exhibit is planned for September 8th from 5:30-9 pm with complimentary refreshments and live music performed by violinist Elise Van Patten.

The District Gallery is pleased to present Equine Spirit, a collection of horse-inspired fine art and craft. The exhibit seeks to convey the essence of the horse through various media and includes the work of established gallery artists and introduces new artists to the gallery.

Current gallery artists were called to step beyond their comfort zone while embracing the equine theme. Artists who rose to this challenge include Donna Conliffe, Gary Dagnan, Ruth Koh, Jane Schmidt and others. Additionally, we are thrilled to introduce the work of veteran equine artists Dan Addington, Nan Jacobsohn, Mase Lucas and Rachael McCampbell.

The Knoxville Museum of Art presents two concurrent exhibitions August 24-November 4 Contemporary Focus 2012 and Fischli & Weiss: The Way Things Go.

Contemporary Focus is the KMA’s annual exhibition series that recognizes, supports, and documents the development of contemporary art in East Tennessee. Each year, the exhibition series features the work of artists who are living and making art in this region, and who are exploring issues relevant to the larger world of contemporary art.

The Way Things Go, a video installation by Swiss artists Peter Fischli and David Weiss, has earned a cult following since its premier at international art festivals in 1987. The Way Things Go documents a 30-minute chain reaction using ordinary objects, fire, fireworks, blasts of air, gravity, and a variety of corrosive liquids.

A free public opening for both exhibitions takes place Thursday, August 23 from 7-9pm. This event includes a cash bar and an opportunity to meet the Contemporary Focus artists. Additional programming for Contemporary Focus includes Dine & Discover presentations August 22, September 25, and October 24, all held at noon at the KMA.

The Knoxville Museum of Art celebrates the art and artists of East Tennessee, presents new art and new ideas, serves and educates diverse audiences, and enhances Knoxville’s quality of life.
