The first weekend in May, the community of Townsend grows from a few hundred to more than 20,000 as visitors from across the country come to the mountain town to learn about and celebrate Appalachian culture at the Smokies Spring Festival and Old Timers Day.
Just a few of the activities taking place at the festival include clogging, storytelling, wildflower walks, children’s activities, Southern food, and the heart of the spring festival – bluegrass music, which features special performances and jam sessions throughout the grounds of the visitors center.
Appalachian demonstrations including blacksmithing, weaving, bee keeping, cornmeal making, rug hooking and woodcarving will bring old Appalachia to life before the eyes of festival-goers. Old harp singing, book signings, a Cades Cove preservation and an Appalachian Bear Rescue exhibit will be among the many opportunities in which visitors can partake.
Throughout Townsend, there will also be multiple other events held in conjunction with the main festival taking place at the Townsend Visitors Center, including the 7th Annual Quilters Road Show and the Pistol Creek Catch Of The Day concert at the Smoky Mountain Heritage Center, an interactive walking tour featuring a full-sized engine, coal and water tank at the Little River Railroad and Lumber Company Museum and a unique shopping experience at Townsend’s downtown – Trillium Cove. A free shuttle service will provide transportation to and from each of the venues.
