The Arts & Culture Alliance is proud to present “Art Appetizers,” a new exhibition of painting, drawing, photography, mixed media, ceramic, and more from local artists who are members of the Arts & Culture Alliance. All of the works are for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition. Artists featured in “Art Appetizers” include: Neranza Noel Blount, Gay Bryant, Bill Capshaw, Aleex Conner, Claudia Dean, Lolly Durant, Bailey Earith, Deede Edele, Carl Gombert, Annamaria Gundlach, Kelly Hider, Kathy Holland, Kate McCullough, Tom McDaniel, Gloria Nelson, Donna Silvey, Jeffrey Stoner, Bonnie J. Vetterick, and Kurt Weiss.

The exhibition will be on display in the display case and the main gallery of the Emporium Center, 100 S. Gay Street, in downtown Knoxville from November 7-26, 2013. The East Tennessee Society of the Archaeological Institute of America and the McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, present their annual lecture series, which invites scholars from around the world to present the latest archaeological discoveries. It is free and open to the public.

Upcoming lectures this fall include the following:
Nov. 7: "Cultural Interaction and Reaction in the Courtly Art of the Hellenistic World" by Kristen Seaman, Kennesaw State University, Ga.

East Tennessee Preservation Alliance (ETPA) and Knox Heritage are once again hosting the East Tennessee Preservation Conference. This year marks the fifth and most ambitious conference to date, and the theme The Power of Place guides the schedule by offering activities and sessions that prompt participants to celebrate and capitalize on East Tennessee’s authentic places. Each year the organizers have recruited more diverse speakers, panelists, sponsors, and experiences to maximize the benefit for those in attendance.

Oftentimes people ask what is the target audience for the conference. The short answer is “preservationists,” but that elicits a follow up question. Who are “preservationists?” The truth is the conference schedule is loaded with sessions that cover a wide range of interests. So if you are:
- interested in saving buildings in your community
- networking with peers across the region about heritage tourism, historic preservation issues, and more
- hearing from leaders from across the region, including the State Historic Preservation Officer Patrick McIntyre, State Historian Dr. C. Van West, and heritage tourism guru Cheryl Hargrove
- earning continuing credits for American Institute of Architects (AIA), Main Street Communities, and Historic District Commissioners
- learning more about economic development for downtowns by embracing the authentic places
- eager to see who will be awarded the 2013 East Tennessee Preservation Awards
- hearing from Kreis Beall, founder and creative Director of Design from Blackberry Farm

Across East Tennessee, communities are positioning their cultural assets as amenities for residents and visitors, which create a richer, more desirable place. Historic preservation has become a fundamental tool for strengthening American communities. It has proven to be vital for a wide range of public goals including small business incubation, housing, sustainable development, neighborhood stabilization, downtown revitalization, job creation, promotion of the arts and culture, small town renewal, heritage tourism, economic development, and others.

On Thursday evening the Downtown Maryville Association, one of ETPA’s long-time partners, is hosting its annual Maryville Uncorked event in conjunction with the conference. In the Blackberry Farm Gallery
Knoxville Artist Jered Sprecher’s paintings, drawings and installations focus on the “fleeting images and objects that surround us,” according to the artist. An associate professor in the University of Tennessee’s School of Art, Sprecher received his bachelor of arts degree from Concordia University in Nebraska and a master of fine arts degree from the University of Iowa. His work has been exhibited at The Drawing Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Urban Institute for Contemporary Art, Chinati Foundation, Irish Museum of Modern Art, Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Des Moines Art Center and Espai d'art Contemporani de Castelló. In 2009, he was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship. Most recently, he was the artist-in-residence at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas.

Sally Ham Govan draws figures and dogs and creates digital illustrations of city scenes. She has a BFA in studio art (drawing and graphic design) from the University of Tennessee and an MFA in illustration from the University of Hartford. She designs and edits publications and websites for Jones College of Business at Middle Tennessee State University. Previously she worked as an art director at Whittle Communications and a graphic designer at the Knoxville News Sentinel. Her website is sallygovan.com.

A special art exhibit during the month of November will be displayed at the Plateau Creative Arts Center, 451 Lakeview Drive (off Peavine) , Fairfield Glade. The Art Guild will pay a Memorial Tribute to artist, Larry Harrington, who passed away in August.

Larry was an excellent artist and his graphite and charcoal drawings were exquisite - elegant and beautiful in their simplicity and execution. He was always ready to help anyone with any problem. Everything he did was with a big smile. Larry was, also, an Episcopalian Monk. What an interesting person he was.

In conjunction with this exhibit, a reception for the public will be at the Plateau Creative Arts Center, home of the Art Guild, beginning November 3 from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm . Larry’s art work will be on display and for sale along with many other items through the month of November.

Bliss Home is pleased to present Bottle Cap Art by Knoxville artist, Ryan Blair, for November's First Friday. Bliss Home, located at 29 Market Square, will host an opening reception on Friday, November 1st, from 6pm to 9pm. Complimentary Steamboat Sandwiches will be provided and Ryan's art will be featured for the month of November. Ryan's exhibit Bottle Cap Art is funky and fried southern folk art acrylic paintings on wood depicting vintage neon signage, distressed, and then covered in painted bottle caps. Bottle Cap Art consists of mixed media, like wood, bottle caps and acrylic paints. Ryan's inspiration for Bottle Cap Art comes from vintage neon signs across the United States. Ryan was born and raised in Central Indiana but has spent the last 17 years in the foothills of East Tennessee. Ryan holds a degree in Art Education, with an emphasis in painting, which he uses to teach art in Knoxville's public school system. Website: ryanblairart.com

A1LabArts and the Center for the Creative Mind is happy to announce a group exhibition "Layered and Built," which showcases recent work by 3 MFA painting graduates from the University of Tennessee. Their work explores various forms of abstraction informed by sources such as architecture, pattern, geometry, debris, and pop culture. The exhibition and opening reception is November 1st from 6-10 p.m. at the Center for the Creative Mind, 23 Emory Place.
Kate Faulkner and Briena Harmening reside and work in Knoxville. Briena is a member of the Vacuum Shop Studios, and teaches the International Baccalaureate Art program at West High School. Kate Faulkner currently coordinates the Summer Art Academy at the Knoxville Museum of Art and teaches at both Walter State Community College in Morristown, and at Tusculum College, in Greenville, Tennessee. Rachel Clark has taught at Ohio University and co-directed a study abroad program in Hungary. She currently teaches at Ohio University Lancaster and in the Ohio University’s Upward Bound program.

Every Spiritile is handcrafted in Atlanta, Georgia from American made copper,
glass and wood. Finely ground colored glass is handpainted on copper and then
fired by kiln at 1500 degrees.

New Work by Lisa Kurtz
Lisa throws and hand builds functional pottery. Most of her textural pieces are altered while still wet to highlight the intrinsic beauty of the clay itself. Lisa mixes her own glazes, which adds a unique depth and quality to the work.
