The Arts Center in Athens, TN is pleased to announce the HOLIDAY TRUNK SHOW, a 3-day indoor show and sale of fine art, crafts, and handmade gifts from local and regional artisans. The Holiday Trunk Show begins Thursday November 21st with a preview party and ends on Saturday November 23rd. The event is sponsored by Athens Federal Community Bank.

The Holiday Trunk Show is a one-of-a-kind shopping opportunity for the holidays, featuring something for everyone’s gift-giving budget. Among the featured items are accessories for home & holiday, original art and prints, jewelry, pottery, baskets, art gourds, glass, scented soaps and body care products, hand woven and knitted scarves and shawls, hand painted silk garments, handmade ornaments, handbags, books, candles, and more. The event begins Thursday, November 21st at the Preview Party from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM. Admission is $5 or a donation of recently purchased non-perishable food items for the Coordinated Charities of Athens food bank. The Preview Party, hosted by AACA volunteers, features early shopping, refreshments, door prizes provided by the artists, and entertainment by guitarist Oneta Wright. Tickets for Thursday’s Preview Party are available at The Arts Center or at the door. Other shopping hours are admission-free on Friday, November 22nd 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM, and Saturday, November 23rd, 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM.

A “Twilight Shopping Spectacular”, sponsored by the Athens Downtown Business Association, will take place Friday evening, November 22nd from 5:00 PM– 8:00 PM. The stores of the downtown business district will be open late so visitors may see and shop their holiday selections. During that time, The Arts Center will host “Pictures with Santa” from 5:30 – 7:30 PM along with the Holiday Trunk Show. The photo package includes one 5 x 7 and 4 wallet size photos for $10.00. Children of all ages are invited to come and have their picture taken with Santa. The photo packages will be available for pick-up beginning 10:00 AM on Monday, December 2.

Knox Heritage holds its 2013 Preservation Awards ceremony and Annual Meeting on Thursday, November 21st, at the Bijou Theatre in downtown Knoxville. The special guest of the evening is Tuomi Joshua Forrest, Executive Vice-President of Partners for Sacred Places. Admission is free, and everyone is welcome to attend.

The event begins at 5:00 p.m. with a reception, followed by the Annual Meeting and Preservation Awards at 6:00 p.m. A report of the organization’s work from the previous year will be delivered by Knox Heritage board president Annette Brun. Mr. Forrest will deliver remarks before the Preservation Awards are presented by Executive Director Kim Trent. Awards for the best in preservation during 2013 will be presented in the following categories: the City of Knoxville Mayor’s Award and the Knox County Mayor’s Award; the Greystone Award; “Spirit of Kristopher”; the “Fantastic Fifteen” for preservation rehabilitation, restoration, and preservation stewardship; the Volunteer of the Year; and the Media Award.

Partners for Sacred Places was founded in 1989 by a national task force of religious, historic preservation, and philanthropic leaders. Since then, Partners has served several thousand congregations and other local organizations and represents the needs and concerns of over 100,000 older, community-serving sacred places in every town and city across America. Partners brings together a national network of expert professionals who understand the value of a congregation’s architectural assets, its worth as a faith community, and the significance of its service to the community at large. Partners is the only national advocate for the sound stewardship and active community use of America’s older religious properties.

Tuomi Joshua Forrest has offered technical advice and consultation to thousands of congregations of all faiths on the care and active community use of their historic religious buildings since joining Partners in 1997. He has contributed to publications such as Sacred Places at Risk (1998), Open the Doors: A Guide to Serving Families in Sacred Places (2001), and Your Sacred Place is a Community Asset: A Tool Kit to Attract New Resources and Partners (2002), and he has also spoken at many conferences and workshops around the country.

The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra presents a brand new FREE recital series with the members of the Woodwind Quintet and the Principal Quartet. The Q Series performance dates are:

“This is a brand new initiative for us,” said Rachel Ford, KSO Executive Director. “Launching the Q Series is made possible through a generous gift from the Aslan Foundation. The Foundation’s support has allowed the KSO’s five principal woodwind musicians to transition to full-time members of the core orchestra. The Woodwind Quintet will be active participants in the KSO’s educational programs in addition to joining with the Principal Quartet to perform this free recital series during the 2013-14 season. We are excited to introduce these musicians to the Knoxville community and to see the evolution of the Q Series.”

The Woodwind Quintet members are: Ebonee Thomas, flute; Phylis Secrist, oboe; Gary Sperl, clarinet; Aaron Apaza, bassoon and Jeffery Whaley, French horn. The Principal Quartet members are: Gordon Tsai and Edward Pulgar violin; Kathryn Gawne, viola and Andy Bryenton, cello.

The musical program includes Barthe’s Passacaille, George Bizet’s Jeux d’enfants, Paul Valjean’s Dance Suite for Woodwind Quintet, Gunther Schuller’s Suite for Woodwind Quintet, Gershwin’s Three Preludes, and Dvorak’s Quintet.

The RSCC Playmakers present The Foreigner by Larry Shue.
The setting-a fishing lodge in rural Georgia. The story-a frequent visitor to the lodge, Froggy, has brought along a friend, a pathologically shy young man named Charlie who is overcome with fear at the thought of making conversation with strangers. Froggy tells all assembled that Charlie speaks no English. The fun begins as Charlie overhears more than he should.
