The featured exhibits at the library! The exhibits will be coordinated by his children, Allison Gallup and George Gallup, III. George Gallup, Jr., had a home in Blount County, TN. His father founded the Gallup Poll, and George, Jr., continued the business until he sold the company.

Pellissippi State Community College’s Spring Choral Concert on May 1 brings to an end the 2013-2014 The Arts at Pellissippi State season. The concert is at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 1, in the Clayton Performing Arts Center on the Hardin Valley Campus, 10915 Hardin Valley Road.

“The Spring Choral Concert will feature our Concert Chorale and Variations Ensemble in our usual wide variety of choral music offerings,” said Bill Brewer, program coordinator of Music and associate professor of Liberal Arts. “Selections will range from classical to Broadway show tunes to African-American spirituals. A highlight of this year’s final concert will be a performance by the alumni choir. We are really looking forward to having these former students back on campus and singing with us again.”

The event is free and the community is invited. Donations will be accepted at the door for the Pellissippi State Foundation on behalf of the Music Scholarship Fund.

The Concert Chorale and Variations groups are composed of a wide cross-section of students from a variety of majors. The Variations Ensemble is preparing for a study abroad and concert opportunity overseas in May, in collaboration with the Tennessee Consortium for International Studies. The Spring Choral Concert is the last in a string of performances during Pellissippi State’s yearlong Music Concert Series. The series is part of The Arts at Pellissippi State, which brings to the community cultural activities ranging from music and theatre to international celebrations, lectures, and the fine arts. All piano performances and accompaniments will be performed on Steinways, in keeping with Pellissippi State’s status as an All-Steinway School.

Vince Vawter, author of the award-winning middle-grade/young adult novel “Paperboy,” will share the things he learned as a rookie in the publishing world and his tips for writing a children’s book at the Thursday, May 1 Knoxville Writers' Guild meeting.

The event, which will be open to the public, begins at 7 p.m. at the Laurel Theater, at the corner of Laurel Avenue and 16th Street in Fort Sanders. A $2 donation is requested at the door. The building is handicapped accessible. Additional parking is available at Redeemer Church of Knoxville, 1642 Highland Ave.

Vawter will discuss several important ‘lessons’ based on his experience with “Paperboy,” published by Random House May 2013. A few tips will be specific to writing children’s books, but most will apply to writers across all publishing genres.

2014 Honors Exhibition
reception: Friday, May 2, 3-5PM at the Ewing Gallery

Initiated by the Ewing's Director Sam Yates 24 years ago, this exhibition recognizes outstanding students graduating from The University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of Art, College of Arts and Sciences; a Bachelor of Architecture or Bachelor of Science, Interior Design, a Master of Architecture, and a Master of Landscape Design from the College of Architecture and Design.

Selected by a School of Art Faculty Scholarship committee, seven art students from various art disciplines were chosen from the qualifying applicants for this year's exhibition. These students are Lauren Beale, Lauren Hulse, Richard Ensor, Josie Henry, Paige Burchell, Marta Lee, and Hannah Barker.
The College of Architecture and Design participants were selected by the faculty-at-large, and by outside review teams. Exhibitors are Leah Baker, Jenny Budde, Claire Kistler, Jennifer Stewart, Mallory Barga, Amanda Gann, and Daniel Zegel.

The world is invited to Knoxville, Tennessee, during the first week of May 2014 to celebrate the opening of Cycle of Life, Within the Power of Dreams and the Wonder of Infinity. This epic sculptural masterpiece by internationally acclaimed artist Richard Jolley will be a permanent installation at the Knoxville Museum of Art. At 185 running feet and over seven tons, Cycle of Life is expected to be the largest figural glass assemblage in the world. Installation in the museum's Great Hall begins in the fall of 2013. This transformational gift from Ann and Steve Bailey has also provided the catalyst for a comprehensive renovation of the museum's landmark Clayton Building, designed by the late Edward Larrabee Barnes, and the construction of new garden areas, all of which are expected to be complete by May 2014.

The Hot Glass Roadshow, presented by the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, NY, will present live, hot glassblowing demonstrations for the public beginning Wednesday, April 30 through Sunday, May 4. The Roadshow uses unique glassmaking equipment to recreate a state-of-the-art studio environment. At venues around the world, the Corning Museum’s gaffers demonstrate complex hot glassmaking techniques in front of live audiences. Live glassmaking demos will be offered from 10am to 12noon and then again from 1pm to 4:45pm Wednesday through Sunday. All glassmaking performances are free for the public and all ages are welcome.

In conjunction with the new feature exhibition, Woven of Wood: East Tennessee Baskets, 1880-1940, the East Tennessee Historical Society will be holding a series of “Casual Basket Sundays” and special demonstrations by members of the Foothills Craft Guild. Guests are invited to bring their baskets, share stories, and meet with basket experts. Programs include:

There will be basket making demonstrations from members of the Foothills Crafts Guild on the porch and front lobby of the East Tennessee History Center. Featured artists include Karen Kenst, Sue Mowen, Judy and Virgil Davis, Bill Alexander, and Jim Gentry.

April 27, 2:00-4:00, A United States show and tell gathering
Collectors will show their favorite or unusual baskets made roughly from 1880-1940, regardless of where in the United States they were made. Examples are likely to be seen from Pennsylvania, Virginia, North and South Carolina, Kentucky, Missouri, and Middle Tennessee, as well as Native American. Each collector will tell something about his basket, either why it is a favorite or something of its history. There will also be basket demonstrations by featured basket maker Billy Sims and Sue Mowen and Bill Alexander from the Foothills Craft Guild.

May 11, beginning at 2:00, Mother’s Day Gallery Tours
Interactive gallery tours of the East Tennessee Historical Society’s feature exhibit Woven of Wood lead by guest curator Carole Carpenter Wahler. Museum visitors will learn about baskets and their features and are welcome to join in at any time.

May 18, 2:00-4:00, Casual Basket Sunday- A world wide show and tell gathering
Collectors will show baskets made anywhere in the world, at any time, and of any materials. Examples are likely to be seen from Australia, Africa, Philippines, England, and China, as well as baskets made in Tennessee from the middle of the 20th century to the present. Each collector will tell something about his basket, either why it is a favorite or something of its history. A gallery tour of Woven of Wood will take place immediately following the show and tell gathering.

he Farragut Business Alliance has once again partnered with the Town of Farragut and Dogwood Arts Festival to host the 4th Annual Farragut Art in the Park, presented by TDS. It is a plein air event, with two days of painting or photography on location, followed by a gallery reception and sale. Art for Kids! will be back again this year as well and new youth competition categories have been added.

The paint-out/shooting dates are Saturday and Sunday, April 26-27, 2014. The Gallery Reception and Sale is Friday, May 9th. The events will occur rain or shine.

Farragut Art in the Park culminates with a Gallery Reception & Art Sale at 7pm on Friday, May 9. Due to a generous partnership with The Pinnacle at Turkey Creek, it will be held in a new location this year, at 11483 Parkside Drive (in the space next to Men’s Warehouse). Hors d'oeuvres and desserts are complimentary and wine will be available for $3 per glass. The Knoxville Bella Corda, an Allied Music Instructors youth acoustic guitar ensemble, will provide entertainment. Finally, Best of Show, First Place and Second Place paintings and photographs (judged separately) will be awarded cash prizes. Presenting Sponsor’s Choice will also be named.
