Since 1993, and years before the resurgence of downtown, Alive After Five has been attracting people to Knoxville from the Knox County periphery and surrounding counties to enjoy live music, food, spirits, and art in the casually elegant atmosphere of the Knoxville Museum of Art. The early Friday evening program has been a great way to wind down from the work week or to start the weekend or both. Mostly showcasing the rich treasure trove of local and regional musical talent, Alive After Five has also presented acts from New Orleans, Boston, Dallas, Canada, Peru, France, Japan, Australia, and more. Food is available from a variety of area restaurants or caterers, and there are two cash bars.

October 31 – “Costume Party” with Boys’ Night Out
We are saddened to announce that Jeff Ginsburg, guitarist and a founding member of Boys' Night Out passed away on Saturday, October 18. Grieving and in shock, the band thought about cancelling the performance, but then, remembering Jeff's "life of the party" spirit, they knew they had to go on, because Jeff would certainly be there in spirit, maybe even as a Halloween ghost, just for fun! So it's a Halloween Friday, and we’re looking forward to throwing another costume party with the Carolina beach music of Boys’ Night Out, with the spirit of Jeff Ginsburg in our midst! This eleven-member band celebrated their 30th year anniversary this summer, and that's plenty spooky enough! So whether you don a costume or come as you are, a good time is going to be had by one and all!

Celebrating its 40th Anniversary Season!

After losing his best friend during a cross-country bike tour, Leo lands on his grandmother’s West Village doorstep. Named “Best Play of the Season” by Time Magazine, this Pulitzer Prize nominated drama explores the funny, frustrating and ultimately life-changing relationship between a grandson learning to face his life and a grandmother who is starting to forget hers.

The critically acclaimed comic-drama was written by playwright Amy Herzog who based the Vera character on her own grandmother. Herzog was the winner of the 2012 Obie Award for Best New American Play, the 2012 Lucile Lortel Award, and the 2012 Off Broadway Alliance Award. “4000 Miles” was also named “TIME” magazine’s #1 Play of 2012 and was a finalist for the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Providing a unique theatre experience, this production will be staged “in-the-round,” a form of theatrical presentation in which the audience is seated in a circle around the stage. The Carousel Theatre is one of the oldest theatres in-the-round in the country.

To enhance the audience experience, the CBT will continue, and in some cases expand, several popular programs in 2014-2015. Open captioned productions also will continue in the new season, taking place on the first Sunday matinee of each show. Talk backs, which are informative discussions with the director and cast, will continue to take place following the second Sunday matinee of each show.

Talk to Me Like the Rain and Amelia Lost will feature local and emerging artists, singers, directors, instrumentalists, and conductor. There will be an open bar as well as dinner and lunch options available for both performances. General Admission is $20 for adults, and $12 for students. Special Halloween production of The Woman in Black, A Ghost Play on Thursday, October 30 and Friday, October 31, 2014 at 7:30 pm at The Arts Center at 320 North White Street, Athens, Tennessee. This ACT One Weekend Only event is sponsored by Athens Federal Community Bank.

Adapted by Stephen Mallatratt from the book by Susan Hill, The Woman In Black tells the story of Arthur Kipps, a middle-aged lawyer who rents a theater and the services of a professional actor to help him re-enact — and hopefully eliminate — an event from his past so tragic and horrifying it haunts him decades later.

Stephen Mallatratt’s adaptation of the original novel by Susan Hill enjoyed an extended run in London’s West End, and The Woman In Black was most recently seen on the big screen starring Daniel Radcliffe.

Veteran ACT actor Brad Jewell makes his directorial debut with this show. Cast and crew include: Les Rust, Merrick Gray, Aislin Anderson, Jeff Wilkins, G. David Brown, Lindsey Kimball, and Karen Siklosi. Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for students. AACA offers a $2 discount on the purchase price of a ticket for those who come to see The Woman in Black in costume.

The Young People's Concerts are symphony performances made just for kids!

The KSO will perform five Young People's Concerts on October 29, 30 & 31 at the Knoxville Civic Auditorium for more than 8,000 local students. These concerts are specially designed for students in 3rd through 5th grades.

Maestro James Fellenbaum conducts the KSO with special guests actor Terry Weber and the Austin East West African Drum & Dance Ensemble. The theme “Are We There Yet?” takes students on a map across the world to see and hear various types of music from many cultures. The 9:30 a.m. shows offer an excellent photo & video opportunity.

Images of Afghanistan are the subject of an upcoming art exhibit at Pellissippi State Community College. The exhibit is sponsored by the Tennessee Consortium for International Studies. At the Bagwell Center for Media and Art, located on the Hardin Valley Campus, 10915 Hardin Valley Road. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Admission is free, and the gallery is always open to the public.

“Bringing cultural awareness and understanding to students and faculty is an important component of the mission of TnCIS,” said Tracey Bradley, TnCIS executive director. “TnCIS is honored to be a part of this extraordinary exhibit portraying the lives of civilians in Afghanistan.” The exhibit features the work of Slovenian artist Manca Juvan, who spent months in Afghanistan doing field research into the civil society of the country. “Stories on the lives of ordinary Afghans caught in this endless conflict of interest and the ongoing struggle for money, power, and overall control remind us what the real images of war and poverty—of lives far from ordinary—look like,” Juvan said.

“Afghanistan: Unordinary Lives” is one of the events that make up Pellissippi State’s arts series, The Arts at Pellissippi State. The series brings to the community cultural activities ranging from music and theatre to international celebrations, lectures, and the fine arts. This year, the arts series commemorates Pellissippi State’s 40th anniversary.
