Athens Area Council for the Arts: NYC Singer-Songwriter Performance
Category: Music
Nick Africano, a Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter, performs in Athens as part of a pre-release tour for his second album. The concert is in the Sue E. Trotter Theater at The Arts Center in Athens. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students. All proceeds benefit Athens Area Council for the Arts’ arts in education program.
Nick Africano combines the best of folk and soul with sublime storytelling to create a unique style. His music doesn’t fit in a single genre or style – his voice is at times a powerhouse fit for arena rock, sometimes soulful befitting mid-60s Motown, and other times sincere like the early years of Elvis Pressley. Fresh from a summer residency at Manhattan’s Rockwood Music Hall, Africano stops in Athens on his cross-country album pre-lease tour before heading to Europe.
The Arts Center celebrates National Arts & Humanities Month this October by offering a full calendar of events so the community can join in the celebration. “Roots of Our Art: Collected Works by Athens’ Own,” is on exhibition through October 31. Thursday October 2 – Saturday October 4 is the final weekend of ACT & TWC’s “Town & Gown” production of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town. Fall classes begin Monday October 6 and Tuesday October 7 is The Arts Center’s free lunchtime program “Arts on the Side” featuring a performance by TWC a cappella ensemble Vox Humana. Saturday October 11 is Nick Africano in Concert, followed by the Black Box Concert Series opener Ruth Moody Band on Friday October 17. Friday October 24 is the Bonus Concert for Big Time/Small Town Performance Season early-bird ticket buyers and corporate sponsors, Ed Snodderly and Friends, and a limited number of tickets may be available at the door. ACT’s “One Weekend Only” series present two performances of the ghost play The Woman in Black on Thursday October 30 and Friday October 31.

Sundress Academy for the Arts: Science Fiction Workshop
Category: Classes, workshops and Literature, spoken word, writing
Sundress Academy for the Arts, a branch of Sundress Publications, is pleased to announce its science fiction workshop “My Other Car is Another World: Writing Fiction in the Genres”. The workshop is $50 and open to the public.
This workshop will be held on SAFTA’s own Firefly Farms in Knoxville, Tennessee and will focus on simple, practical methods for generating genre story ideas, planning and plotting, drafting and perfecting your stories. Workshop participants will learn tips for negotiating the cutthroat world of genre fiction publishing.
This workshop offers the opportunity to work with published author and science fiction writer, Gary Charles Wilkens. Every participant in the workshop will leave with a 20+ page book written by Dr. Wilkens full of instruction and advice for writing genre fiction, as well as, of course, a complete draft of a genre fiction story.
Gary Charles Wilkens, Assistant Professor of English at Norfolk State University, was the winner of the 2006 Texas Review Breakthrough Poetry Prize for his first book, The Red Light Was My Mind. His poems have appeared in more than 60 online and print venues, and he is also the author of (the yet unpublished) science fiction novel The Crying Road, as well as more than a dozen sci-fi stories and flash fictions. He earned his Ph.D. in Creative Writing in 2010 from The University of Southern Mississippi. A second sci-fi novel is in the works. Space at this workshop is limited, so reserve your space today!

Knox County Public Library: What Do Poetry Judges Want?
Category: Classes, workshops, Free event, Kids, family and Literature, spoken word, writing
Join award winning poet, Rose Klix, for a workshop on poetry competitions at the Halls Branch Library, 4518 E. Emory Road, on Saturday, October 11 at 2 p.m. In this one-hour program, Rose will present her experiences entering competitions and as a judge of contests. Her handout will outline her judging criteria for individual poems as well as poetry collections. Because the Poetry Society of Tennessee and the Poetry Society of Tennessee - Northeast Chapter are affiliated with the National Federation of State Poetry Societies (NFSPS), Rose will share websites and information on poetry contests in Tennessee as well as nationally. At the end of the presentation, she welcomes a question and answer time.
This program may be of interest to anyone learning to enter poetry contests. It may also provide useful insights for those who wondered why their poem was not selected.
About the Presenter: Rose Klix is a published and award-winning poet, produced playwright and author. She celebrated her 50th anniversary of writing poetry in 2012 by publishing her two-volume set Pastiche of Poetry. As an active member of the Poetry Society of Tennessee (PST), Rose was selected for the honorary title of PST Poet Laureate for 2010/11. Four years ago, she organized the Poetry Society of Tennessee - Northeast branch (PST-NE). This group is sponsoring a poetry contest with an upcoming deadline in November.
