The Ewing Gallery is excited to present selected drawings by architect Perry Kulper. Perry Kulper is an architect and associate professor of architecture at the University of Michigan. Prior to his arrival at the University of Michigan he was a SCI-Arc faculty member for 16 years as well as in visiting positions at the University of Pennsylvania and Arizona State University. Subsequent to his studies at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (BS Arch) and Columbia University (M Arch) he worked in the offices of Eisenman/ Robertson, Robert A.M. Stern and Venturi, Rauch and Scott Brown before moving to Los Angeles. His interests include the roles of representation and methodologies in the production of architecture and in broadening the conceptual range by which architecture contributes to our cultural imagination.

Few stories are as timeless -- or reveal the courage and resilience of the human spirit -- as “The Miracle Worker,” which will run on the Clarence Brown Theatre mainstage October 2 – 19, 2014. The production tells the story of young Helen Keller, deaf and blind since infancy, who finds her way into the world of knowledge and understanding with the help of Annie Sullivan, her gifted tutor. In some of the most emotion-packed scenes ever presented on the stage, Helen overcomes rage and confusion to triumph over her physical disabilities.

The cast is comprised of guest professional actors, faculty, UT Theatre graduate actors and UT Theatre undergraduate actors.

The Clarence Brown Theatre will hold three Deaf Night at the Theatre performances during the 2014-2015 Season. The performances include: The Miracle Worker on Tuesday, October 14, A Christmas Carol on Tuesday, December 9 and A Midsummer Night’s Dream on Tuesday, March 3. Best-selling Irish novelist Glenn Meade will speak about his latest book, "The Last Witness," at the Knoxville Writers' Guild's program.

"The Last Witness" begins after a massacre at a Bosnian prison camp where a young girl is found alone, clutching a diary, so traumatized she can’t even speak. Twenty years later, the last witness to the prison guards' brutal crimes must hunt down those responsible to learn what happened to her family.

‘A Few of Our Favorite Things’ faculty concert

“A Few of Our Favorite Things” in the Clayton Performing Arts Center on the Hardin Valley Campus, 10915 Hardin Valley Road. The concert features musical performances by the college’s Music faculty.

The event is free and the community is invited.
“A Few of Our Favorite Things” is one of the performances in Pellissippi State’s yearlong Music Concert Series. The series is part of The Arts at Pellissippi State, which brings to the community cultural activities ranging from music and theatre to international celebrations, lectures, and the fine arts. All piano performances and accompaniments are performed on Steinways, in keeping with Pellissippi State’s status as an All-Steinway School.

The show is open to fine art photographers working in any photography medium, (alternative, traditional, and digital approaches) - we care about well-done art more than the specific medium, technique or format. Fine Art Photography refers to photographs that are created in accordance with the creative vision of the photographer as artist. Fine Art Photography stands in contrast to photojournalism, which provides a visual account for news events, and commercial photography, the primary focus of which is to advertise products or services. Known as the Three Femmes, Elaine Barnes, Lauren Karnitz and Annamaria Gundlach will once again bring their works to the Clayton Center for the Arts DENSO Gallery until October 31, 2014. Artist Statement (Erica Beck '04):
The artwork I am presenting in the gallery represents an exploration of my illustration style. It started with the name for my stationery line, Stag & Lucia. It is a nod to both my husband’s and my heritage as these words are rooted in German and Swedish culture. I knew I wanted to create an identity that was both uniquely mine and deeply personal. My dad and my grandmother both were amazing artists and I wanted to honor that legacy. I also strive to pay homage to the region in which I was born and raised - the Southeast. I love the South for its charm, easy elegance and wit - all things I hope to convey in my artwork.

“Works in Progress and Production”

“Every blank book contains the potential to be a living, breathing organism that changes every time it rests beneath a scratching pen, a record of the soul of the individual resulting from the intimate interaction between the mind, the pen, and the page. A book that is too precious, blank or printed, is a book that can be lost to a shelf; and a book on a shelf is one that can be forgotten.”

This collection of work represents an evolution in product design. Included are blank book prototypes from my MFA thesis show in May of this year as well as subsequent iterations and products. My decorative papers stem from a love of printing, mark making, and production and allow me to indulge in intricate handwork.

Some very important lessons in life aren't covered in school. Knox County Public Library is pleased to offer programs for teens this fall. Life 101 is a short series focusing on sharing knowledge on important issues for teens and their families. The free workshops will be held on Saturdays at 2:00 at Lawson McGhee Library, 500 W. Church Ave.

Shannon Reynolds from the University of Tennessee Medical Center's "Healthy Living Kitchen" program will be talking about the importance of establishing healthy eating habits and showing teens how to make a quick and healthy snack.

The Knoxville Museum of Art presents the Latino Art Exhibit in the Corridor Gallery. The select works of nine local Hispanic artists will be featured including works from June Crowe, Susana Esrequis, Astrid Galindo, Angel Luna, Cecilia Stella Martin, Rosalina Tipton, Irene Torrealba, Loren Velazquez, and Luis Velazquez. The exhibit captures the diversity in styles of Hispanic artists residing in East Tennessee and of those who support the mission of LoLa Hora Latina.

Notes about three of the artists in the show:
Rosalina Tipton always tries to express beauty and spontaneity in her work even though her style borders on the abstract. She aims to have a connection with the real world and her personal life experiences. She primarily uses oils, mixed media on canvas, and wood and was influenced by the culture of her native Brazil.
Irene Torrealba, who was born and raised in Santiago, Chile, displays special interests in realism in water color and oil. She especially enjoys painting country landscapes that connect with her memories of her childhood, family, and travels.
For Susana Esrequis, painting is a time when her imagination and feelings come together and when she finds peace in genuine and simple things. Her works often depict pristine landscapes from both South America and North America.
