GO! Contemporary Dance Works: Continuum

9050.jpg
  • November 1, 2014
  • 3:00 PM and 7:30 PM

Category: Dance, movement

GO! Contemporary Dance Works, a non-profit local dance company, will open its 12th season with Continuum, a superlative ensemble of choreographic virtuosity and versatility by both local and regional choreographers. GO! Contemporary Dance Works will perform at the Clarence Brown Theatre in partnership with the Penny4Arts Program and the Tennessee Arts Commission.

"This performance is the epitome of GO! Seven choreographers will present 12 choreographic works, delivering an exuberant and innovative repertoire. This performance is a storm of movement, music and choreography. It will take your breath away," shares GO! Contemporary Dance Works Artistic Director Lisa Hall Mckee. Among the works to be presented in Continuum is “Tacit” by guest choreographer Joy Davis. Joy Davis, one of only four certified Counter Technique teachers in the US, was commissioned by GO! to set a new piece on its senior company. A tension-filled piece, Davis considered herself to be more of a facilitator of the work than the choreographer. "This piece emerged organically from a few “scores" or task-based movement games and a couple of questions. Tacit is an abstraction of this conversation. It is what came out of a good conversation and incredibly talented dancers," says Joy Davis.

Lisa Hall McKee will also be setting new and revisited works, reviving the African based tribal favorite The Takora as well as setting an original work based on the silent film industry entitled "Silent Cinema." "This is an entertaining piece performed by our junior company that is full of fun and humor with fantastic roaring 20's music. The silent film era is so fascinating and we have blips of the three stooges, Charlie Chaplin and other stars doing cameos throughout the piece. Loads of fun!," added McKee.

McKee will also debut a new work, eLemenT/s, which overlays classical and contemporary ballet with aggressive floor and aerial work. "All the elements of movement exploration will be on the stage at the same time. It will show the delineation between the genres of dance while magnifying their similarities. It is a work that is very unafraid,” shared McKee.

Other works to be presented are Into the Darkness by Dylan Kendrick, Peace Awaits by Jill Frere and Convergent Boundaries by Denise Njuguna, a powerful and thought provoking work based on the theory of plate tectonics. Laura Shields will delve into Chinese cultures and traditions, including the tragic but true ritual of foot binding in the emotionally charged work entitled Golden Lilies. "The practice of Chinese foot binding was done in the Chinese culture to young girls ages four to seven and was banned in 1912. I found this intriguing and a deep premise for a ballet, very emotional and visual. The small feet of the young girls were referred to as Golden Lilies," Shields explains.

Performing arts at its best, Continuum will surpass all expectations of its audience with a highly charged and enthralling performance for all ages.

Tickets can be purchased at www.gocontemporarydance.com or by calling 865-539-2475. Advanced tickets are $18 for adults, $12 for seniors and students, and $20 and $15 at the door. Performances are on Saturday, November 1 at the Clarence Brown Theatre at 3:00 and 7:30pm. The matinee performance is in partnership with the Penny4Arts Program, where up to three children can attend for 1 cent with the purchase of an adult ticket. A limited number of seats are available for 1 cent.

This workshop will be held on SAFTA’s own Firefy Farms in Knoxville, Tennessee and will examine the importance of literary translation. By the end of this workshop, attendees will create a visual translation to be workshopped, revised, and shared with the group. No second language experience is required to participate.

“Visual Translation: A Workshop” will be led by Nicole Oquendo, the author of the poetry chapbooks some prophets (2015, Finishing Line Press) and self is wolf (2015, dancing girl press).
