Cultural Attractions Committee: Fisk Jubilee Singers

  • November 20, 2014
  • 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Category: History, heritage and Music

Location: Cox Auditorium, Alumni Memorial Building on UT campus

The Fisk Jubilee Singers are vocal artists and students at Fisk University in Nashville, TN., who sing and travel worldwide.

The original Jubilee Singers introduced ‘slave songs’ to the world in 1871 and were instrumental in preserving this unique American musical tradition known today as Negro spirituals. They broke racial barriers in the US and abroad in the late 19th century and entertained Kings and Queens in Europe. At the same time, they raised money in support of their beloved school.

The Fisk Jubilee Singers continue the tradition of singing the Negro spiritual around the world. This allows the ensemble to share this rich culture globally while preserving this unique music.

“Medicare Plans: How to Make Choices” will be presented on Wednesday, November 20, at 11 a.m., at the Blount County Public Library. If you have Internet access, attenders are encouraged to become familiar with the www.medicare.gov website before the program.

Joani Shaver, Coordinator of the Office on Aging at the Blount County Community Action Agency, will provide a brief overview of original Medicare, with supplemental plans and Part D, or Advantage plans. Shaver is a Certified Information & Referral Specialist for Aging Issues.
Jeremy Long, Doctor of Pharmacy at City Drug Store, will discuss how to determine which Part D plan is best for each individual’s situation. Long has provided information and support to patients with Medicare Part D plans since the Part D inception in 2006. He will discuss navigation of the www.medicare.gov website, provide explanation of basic benefits provided by plans and will explain the dreaded "donut hole" of coverage. He will navigate through a sample patient profile of medications and provide direction on how to decide which plan will best fit a patient's needs based on the Medicare.gov information. He will also help clarify for patients who qualify for the "extra help" portion of Medicare Part D, how to get that specific process started and where to start. Of course there will be plenty of question and answer time available to work on more specific problems
Free and open to the public, the program is sponsored by the Blount County Public Library, located at 508 N. Cusick Street, Maryville.

DENSO Art Gallery
Judith Rodriguez: Photography Exhibit
Wild Violets

Judith Rodriguez, born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, took up photography after a trip to Paris. Wanting to discover her hometown in a new way, she took to the streets to discover the life and people in the streets. She is currently working on Street Portraits, Life at Home and the jxtapositions of shadows, light and what she calls “special one-second expressions”.
Of her works, “Wild Violets” in the DENSO Gallery, Rodiguez says, “I took these close up portraits of people I saw in public places in Buenos Aires. I have been doing that for three years. The streets are the places where routine everyday life takes place in a city. . . . I am amazed at these fleeting encounters, seeing such singular faces walking by, with stories written in the gestures, their dress, or the way they look into your eyes. Shadows, lights, gestures, expressions that last only for a second, reactions that might never be seen twice, as it is impossible to take the same photo twice.”

Artist Reception: The artist will be in from Argentina for the reception November 21 from 6 to 8 PM. Please join us to meet and welcome her.
