Clayton Center for the Arts: MacBeth is the New Black

Category: Theatre

November 13 - November 16, 2014
Haslam Family Flexible Theatre
MacBeth is the New Black

Shakespeare’s tragedy adapted by Jayne Morgan and Linda Marion MacBeth is the New Black is set in a girls' juvenile detention center in East Tennessee, where the young inmates grapple with the classic tale of magic, ambition and violence - and their own demons. Though the play is 90 percent Shakespeare, new material was added by the production’s director, Jayne Morgan, and Linda Parsons Marion, a local poet and playwright.
Filtering the universal themes of Macbeth – ambition, power and the consequences of our actions – through the psyches of the troubled young girls brings a new slant to a familiar story.
This is not your mother's Shakespeare.

Smoky Mountain Blues Society: Fifth Annual Benefit Show

  • November 13, 2014
  • 7:00 PM

Category: Music

The Smoky Mountain Blues Society will team with Scruffy City Hall on Market Square in downtown Knoxville to produce an 8 Band extravaganza in a heartwarming remembrance to Knoxville Blues Diva, Sara Jordan. This will be the Fifth Annual Sara Jordan Birthday Bash!

Jordan was born November 15, 1955 in a log cabin in Wayne County, Ky., and moved to Knoxville at the age of 5. Her initial exposure to the music she mastered came from the church. In 1997, she told Glynn Wilson of Metropulse Magazine; "Everything I have comes from God," she says. "My reputation, my voice, everything."

Before her untimely death in May 2001, Sara Jordan was known as Knoxville’s “Queen of the Blues”, and to this day her crown remains unclaimed. With a big earthy voice and the stage presence to go with it, she lived and breathed the Blues like no one in this town has since the legendary Ida Cox. She performed in several bands - The Delta Flyers, Jordan Project, Mojo, and The Leftovers with whom she performed memorably at the 2000 International Blues Challenge in Memphis. She was also the creative force behind “Ladies Sing the Blues” at The Bijou Theatre in 1999 and the original Blues Jam at Sassy Ann’s, which spawned numerous Blues jams around East Tennessee.

The event begins at 7pm on Thursday November 13, on stage at Scruffy City Hall. A $5.00 cover charge will provide over 6 hours of amazing live BLUES. For this special evening, Rolling Thunder, Jenna and Her Cool Friends, The Romeo Kings, Mighty Blue, Left Foot Dave, North Shore, Ray Pineda Chilly Billy, Rose Hawley and Terry Phillips will share the stage honoring the Queen and raise much needed funds for The InterFaith Health Clinic. The Clinic supported Sara with essential services and comfort in her final days. InterFaith Health Clinic provides affordable and comprehensive health care to people who are working without health insurance, like so many of our area musicians.
