Justin Townes Earle with Cory Branan are making a stop at the hallowed Bijou stage, coming up this November! Earle is a 32-year-old contemporary Americana musician and is the son of Grammy award winning singer-songwriter Steve Earle. Recently married and recently sober, Earle is about to release his fifth full-length album Single Mothers that explores his newfound perspective on life. He’ll be joined by Cory Branan, the Memphis-bred roots-rocker who’ll perfectly set the tone for the night of unforgettable music.

CISV is a global organization dedicated to educating and inspiring for peace through building inter-cultural friendship, cooperation and understanding. Since 1965, the Smoky Mountain chapter of CISV has given hundreds of East Tennesseans the opportunity to experience the excitement and enrichment of cultural diversity. This year we sent 30 delegates to educational programs in Austria, Norway, Algeria, British Columbia, Sweden, Brazil and France. For 2015, we have programs available in France, Italy, Norway, Rio de Janeiro, Germany, the Philippines and Austria.

The most celebrated of all fairy-tale characters is back in Rodgers and Hammerstein classic. The Knoxville Opera proudly presents two performances of Gilbert & Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore on Friday, November 21 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, November 23 at 2:30 p.m. at the city’s hallmark Tennessee Theatre. Maestro Brian Salesky will host a special opera preview session 45 minutes prior to each performance. The musical comedy is perfect for a family outing or special date and is one of several productions offering cultural and entertaining variety throughout the Knoxville Opera’s 37th season.

“This classic comedy is known for its familiar melodies as well as clever wordplay that dares to poke fun at politics and authoritative figures, in a delightfully provocative way,” said Knoxville Opera Executive Director Brian Salesky. “People of all ages will enjoy the music, characters, elaborate stage setting, and costumes.”

H.M.S. Pinafore, also known as The Lass That Loved a Sailor, was Gilbert and Sullivan’s fourth collaboration and their first blockbuster hit. The comic operetta opened in London in 1898 and ran for 571 performances. When it premiered in Boston the following year, one critic wrote, “Going to Pinafore has become a mania.” The plot plays out aboard a naval ship and centers on the conflicts of love between people from different social classes. Taking jabs at the British class system, party politics, the Royal Navy, and the ironic rise of unqualified people into authority, even the title injects humor by using the name of the female pinafore garment in reference to the masculine naval warship. The spectacle includes familiar songs such as, “I’m Called Little Buttercup”, “The Monarch of the Sea”, “When I Was a Lad”, and “I am the Captain of the Pinafore.”

The musical structure and style of H.M.S. Pinafore have been echoed by many composers and contributed significantly to music history and the development of modern musical theatre. A full plot summary, along with cast bios, can be read here.

Pellissippi State Community College showcases the work of its Photography faculty members during the Photography Faculty Exhibit, Nov. 18-Dec. 12. The exhibit is in the Bagwell Center for Media and Art gallery at Pellissippi State’s Hardin Valley Campus, 10915 Hardin Valley Road. Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. A reception takes place 4-6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17. The exhibit and reception are free to attend, and the community is invited. “This exhibit allows our students to see what their professors are doing in their personal art pursuits,” said Kurt Eslick, an associate professor in Photography. “It’s great when students can see that their professors are out there creating, too.”

Judith Rodriguez: Photography Exhibit
Wild Violets

Judith Rodriguez, born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, took up photography after a trip to Paris. Wanting to discover her hometown in a new way, she took to the streets to discover the life and people in the streets. She is currently working on Street Portraits, Life at Home and the jxtapositions of shadows, light and what she calls “special one-second expressions”.
Of her works, “Wild Violets” in the DENSO Gallery, Rodiguez says, “I took these close up portraits of people I saw in public places in Buenos Aires. I have been doing that for three years. The streets are the places where routine everyday life takes place in a city. . . . I am amazed at these fleeting encounters, seeing such singular faces walking by, with stories written in the gestures, their dress, or the way they look into your eyes. Shadows, lights, gestures, expressions that last only for a second, reactions that might never be seen twice, as it is impossible to take the same photo twice.”

Artist Reception: The artist will be in from Argentina for the reception November 21 from 6 to 8 PM. Please join us to meet and welcome her.
