(All Ages) Have you met all the animals that call the Ijams Visitor Center home? If not, be sure to stop by every Saturday for a chance to get nose-to-beak with some of our resident furred and feathered ambassadors. This program is FREE, but donations to support animal care are welcome. Pre-registration is not required for this event.

June 13, 2015 IJAMS BIRDING SERIES: Birding Picnic with Ijams - 10 AM - 12 PM:
Join Ijams naturalist Stephen Lyn Bales for this road trip to Sequoyah Hills to observe Osprey nesting. Last year, we were fortunate to watch parents begin the intricate training of their young fledglings. Brunch will be a hearty continental breakfast provided by our newest gourmand Kodie Underwood. (Ages 16 and up) This program is part of the Tennessee Naturalist Program, an ongoing series that introduces participants to the wonder of the state's amazing natural resources. This session will focus on the furry friends of the mammalian world. This program is open to registered participants only. The Art Guild at Fairfield Glade: Art in the Park

The second annual Art in the Park event, hosted by the Art Guild at Fairfield Glade, will take place on Saturday, June 6, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., and Sunday, June 7, 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Art in the Park is a special event where gifted artisans display their unique creations in the beautiful park setting surrounding the Plateau Creative Arts Center (PCAC). The artists with booths will offer one-of-a-kind gift ideas; fine art in all media including painting, photography, jewelry, and creations in wood, pottery, and basket weaving. In addition to the outside booths, the PCAC’s member gallery will be filled with unique art and crafts, and there’s also much to see on the Sculpture Trail. All together, the fine arts and crafts will provide a wonderful cultural experience and a splendid day’s outing.

Delicious food will be offered on both days by Nick's Italian Ice. In addition, Miss Miller's Donuts will participate (Saturday only) with her famous donuts, bread, homemade jams, and other delectable items.

Musical entertainment will be plentiful at the Art in the Park event. On Saturday, June 6, from 12:00 noon – 2:00 p.m., Memory Road, a popular musical duo featuring two FFG residents will provide a musical mixture of songs from the 50′s through the 80′s. Also on Saturday, from 3:00 – to 5:00 p.m., David Garrison will entertain with a mix of music from the ‘80’s. On Sunday, June 7, from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., Marty Gibson, accomplished guitar player and vocalist, and Annetta Deck, professional pianist, will provide a variety of pop and folk tunes.

Art in the Park is free and open to the public. This outdoor-indoor event will be held at the Plateau Creative Arts Center, which is located at 451 Lakeview Drive (off Peavine) in Fairfield Glade. For more information, call 931-707-7249 or see www.artguildfairfieldglade.net

Mabry-Hazen House: Celebrating Statehood Day

June 1, 2015 marks the 219th anniversary of Tennessee’s admission as the 16th state in the union. East Tennessee’s most important cultural heritage sites are partnering to celebrate Statehood Day on Saturdays, May 23, May 30, and June 6 as well as Sundays, May 24 and May 31. The sites include places of historical significance in the exciting journey from the creation of our country to the founding of our state. The Historic Homes of Knoxville include: Blount Mansion, Crescent Bend, James White’s Fort, Mabry-Hazen House, Marble Springs, Ramsey House, and Historic Westwood. Each site will have individual ways of celebrating the birth of Tennessee. This is a free museum day to the public.

+ Mabry-Hazen House (Saturday, June 6, 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM)
Built in 1858 and housing three generations of the same family from 1858-1987, the Mabry-Hazen House served as headquarters for both Union and Confederate forces during the Civil War. The Civil War, a gunfight on Gay Street in 1882, and a Breach of Promise lawsuit in the early 1930's are only a few stories that bring life and color to those who visit the museum. America Loves Bacon Festival

With the spring season right around the corner, the team at America Loves Bacon Festival tour is hitting the road and setting their sites on Knoxville, TN. The tour will be stopping at the Worlds Fair Park on June 6, 2015. The tour is spreading the bacon love around the country focusing on local flavors, sights, and sounds as well as the America Loves Bacon Tour menu, which will feature dozens of delectable bacon delights. Other tour stop features include chef demonstrations, bacon eating contests, bacon-­‐off competitions between local participants, live music, full bars, a children’s area, and much much more. Polk Salad Festival 2015

The Tennessee Polk Salad Festival returns to Roane County on June 6th, 2015.
David Webb and the Rocky Top General Market have been proud original sponsors of the Polk Salad Festival for years. The Festival continued in 2014 with the Arts Council of Roane County as host.

The emphasis is on the arts, crafts, and foods of our region. Art touches us all, and this Festival encourages feelings of creativity and self-worth for everyone attending. All are encouraged to express their creative talents through music, dance, drama, and visual arts. The signature artistic event of this year’s Festival will be the ‘Poke Mosaic’ where attendees are encouraged to add to the paper mosaic as a community art event.

The range of Festival events include gazebo performances, kid activity tables, and craft demonstrations for unique experiences of our local performing, written, and visual arts. Demonstrations may be given by weavers, potters, jewelers, wood workers, and many more artisans. The Festival is a dynamic, collaborative, and multi-sensory experience for artists and audiences alike.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving: Walk Like MADD

On June 6, at the West Hills Park in Knoxville Tennessee, MADD will host its annual Walk Like MADD. It will be a fun day in the park for families and friends.

The Walk is a non-competitive 5K, bringing the community to raise awareness about the dangers of drunk driving. We are happy to have corporate sponsors like State Farm and Chick-fil-A supporting our efforts to raise needed dollars to help end drunk and drugged driving. Our goal is to raise $18,000 and the monies will be used in the Knoxville /East Tennessee to employ MADD programs, (Victim Services, Court Monitoring and Under Age Drinking Prevention) at no-cost to our participants. It is only $25 to Walk. Together, we can end drunk driving.

Did you know that last year alone 352 Tennesseans lost their lives to drunk driving? Did you know that 2 out of 3 persons have been impacted by drunk driving. By joining the Walk, participants are join us in saying, “No More Victims.” Take a step. Make a difference. Walk Like MADD.

Townsend Artisan Guild: Summertime for Art and Wine Exhibit

The Townsend Artisan Guild and Cades Cove Cellars are offering locally produced art and locally produced wine. Twenty artisans will display their work including fiber arts, painting, photography, pottery, sculpture, stained glass and woodworking. The artists will be on hand to discuss their work and demonstrate some of their processes. Cades Cove Cellars will offer tastings of their wine. The event will be held at 7126 East Lamar Alexander Parkway (Hwy 321) in Townsend.
