Cresthill Cinema Club: WWII Action-Adventure Double Feature
Category: Film
Cresthill Cinema Club's next screening will find us continuing our summer commemoration of the 70th anniversary of World War II’s end. This presentation will be held on the eve of V-J Day, Friday, August 14. That night, at 7:30 PM, we'll be highlighting the World War II ‘B’ picture, with an action-adventure double feature containing the kind of highly-implausible storylines that were pretty typical of this genre. But, in my mind’s eye, our two August movies really take the cake! Their titles: Half Way to Shanghai and First Yank into Tokyo.
Half Way to Shanghai (1942) is set on a train headed for Rangoon. The choo-choo whizzes along with two Gestapo agents pursuing a renegade Nazi spy who has in his possession a map detailing the locations of China’s munitions dumps along the Burma Road. This conspiracy sets off a chain of exciting yet unfathomable events, experienced by the three men and others aboard. The passenger list is comprised of your stereotypical good guys and bad guys – and here you'll get a ton of them, including the world’s worst Charlie Chan imitation!
First Yank into Tokyo tells a tale that truly defies one’s imagination. Starring Tom Neal and Barbara Hale, the melodrama focuses on Major Steve Ross, a Caucasian Ivy League grad. Raised in Tokyo and fluent in Japanese, the major is sent across the Pacific on a top-secret mission: to free from a POW camp a brilliant American scientist possessed of vital information that will lead the Allies to victory in Japan. And how does Ross set about to accomplish this feat? By undergoing plastic surgery that gives him a Japanese appearance!
Friday, August 14, at 7:30PM.
Our location: The spacious clubhouse of the Windover Apartments. The journey there will take you to Cheshire Drive (off Kingston Pike, near the Olive Garden); going down Cheshire, turn right at the Windover Apartments sign, then go to the third parking lot on your right, next to the pool. There, the building that houses the clubhouse and offices of the Windover will be just a few steps away!
