The MACA audience asked and MACA responded! Jesse Cook, perhaps the most popular performer ever to take the stage at Hiwassee College, will return for a third appearance. As always, Cook’s unique guitar style, a hybrid of classical, flamenco, and jazz music continues to evolve.

Over the years, Cook has cross-pollinated his music with musical traditions across the world. “For me,” says Cook, “the question has always been: Where did you go? Where did you take your guitar?” However, this time, the Paris-born, Toronto-raised Cook changed course for his ninth studio album One World. Instead of exotic locales, he stayed home in his studio. “I wanted to make what I was doing feel like Constantinople, the ancient city that existed between the East and the West. It was the meeting point of all these great cultures — Africa, Europe, Asia, India. I want my music to be that place: The Constantinople of sound. The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a professional development seminar for artists and other creative people at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville. Join us as we welcome Mike C. Berry, artist and gallery manager of the University of Tennessee’s Downtown Gallery, who will discuss how to properly package artwork for shipment, whether for sales or exhibition. He will also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using various shipping companies. The presentation is $5 for members of the Arts & Culture Alliance and $8 for non-members. Mike C. Berry, originally from the Midwest, now calls Knoxville home after 15 years. In 1997 he earned his Master of Fine Art from the Savannah College of Art & Design in Savannah, GA. Currently his work consists of colorful and vibrant cityscapes and landscapes, often bending and twisting the perspective in his compositions. Mike is known for his creative interpretations of Knoxville scenes, most notable is his “Spring in the City” painting that was the Dogwood Print in 2007. Mike continues to create work for private commissions and is represented by The District Gallery in Bearden and The River Gallery in Chattanooga, TN. Mike also manages the UT Downtown Gallery, where he prepares works for display and designs the layouts for monthly exhibition. He is an active member of the Art & Culture Alliance. The Town of Farragut and Farragut Arts Council are sponsoring the 2016 Farragut High Schools Art Show this spring at the Farragut Town Hall. Don't miss the opportunity to appreciate the work of some of Farragut's most talented young artists from Farragut High School and Concord Christian School. Awards will be given for first, second and third places during a reception on Tuesday, April 19, 5-6 PM.

Sundress Academy for the Arts (SAFTA) invites you to Scruffy ‘Scapes and Sonnets, an art and poetry exhibit featuring two-dimensional art depicting the scruffy city of Knoxville, TN and the sonnets that were written with the pieces of art in mind.

SAFTA introduces this exhibit from 6 to 8 p.m. in Preservation Pub’s second floor Speakeasy. This event will feature a reception with the artists as well as a reading from the featured poets. Please join us as we celebrate the tremendous amount of talent that Knoxville holds!

The show itself runs from April 1 through May 5, 2016 and features photography by Michelle Jephcott, Jessica Hanneken, Anita Koester, Keith Norris, and Shae Hacker, paintings by Starr Cline and Dawn Hawkins, and sonnets by nationally-acclaimed poets Kristi Maxwell, Chris Petruccelli, Ben McClendon, Keri Withington, Erin Elizabeth Smith, and more!

A celebration of the artwork of Susanne C. Barrie (née Susan Jenkins). Selected drawings and prints will be on exhibit from April 1-30th. The exhibit’s opening reception is on April 8th from 6-9 pm.

Susanne earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Arizona State University. Susanne traveled the world honing her skills as an artist/printmaker, with extensive travel and work in Mexico, Europe, and Japan. Susanne moved to Knoxville in the early 1980s where she has been a long-time, active member of the local arts community.
