Sequoyah Birthplace Museum: Free Lecture with Bill Landry
Category: Free event, History, heritage and Lecture, panel
Join us at Sequoyah Birthplace Museum, on Sunday, April 3, 2016 for a free lecture presentation featuring Bill Landry from the Heartland Series. The lecture will begin at 2:00 and seating is limited.
Bill Landry of the Heartland Series will do a special program on William Bartram, 18th Century naturalist who visited Cherokee country and recorded his experiences there. “The Travels of William Bartram” through Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Pennsylvania was first published in 1791 and is one of the first and best documentations on the natural history of America and its Native American cultures. It introduced the world to the beauty, wonder and majesty of the wilds of America, helped create the character of a continent, and probably had the first, if not longest lasting and greatest, effect on the European concept of this period in America.
Nevertheless, Bartram continues to be a little known historical figure. Birder, artist, flower and seed collector, botanist, anthropologist, explorer and adventurer, Bartram is the author of one of the first great American books of Literature. Many of our ideas about wild places, primitive nature and freedom originate with the ideas of William Bartram.
This lecture is free and open to the public. Sequoyah Birthplace Museum, 576 Hwy 360, Vonore, TN 37885. Hours: M-Sa 9-5, Su 12-5. Information: 423-884-6246, www.sequoyahmuseum.org
