The Maker City: Maker Meetup | Mighty Mud
Category: Culinary arts, food, Exhibitions, visual art, Festivals, special events and Free event
Creative collisions happen when makers, artisans, small-scale manufacturers, and entrepreneurs get together! Come one, come all! Maker Meetups are open to artists, makers, and anyone interested in the local maker movement. Connect with other makers and local creatives and learn more about the exciting work being done in our area!
Mighty Mud: A pottery studio that offers a wide variety of art classes and workshops, provides artist studios to local artists, and sells finished artwork in the gallery.
The Knoxville Community Darkroom: The mission of the Knoxville Community Darkroom is to provide our community with an educational experience in the art of photography. They offer hands-on training in traditional, alternative, and digital photographic processes. The focus is to provide learning opportunities to the community, including school-aged children and underserved populations. They provide facilities and instruction for a variety of workshops and classes for beginners and experienced photographers alike.
Brewing + Distilling Center: The BDC is a trade school that trains and educates folks to be professional beer brewers and distillers. In 2013, Todd White started the Professional Brewing Science Program at South College and put over 80 folks in the industry until he left in 2017 to start the BDC. In addition, the BDC has graduated 45 men and women. They have about 27 graduates in Knoxville alone and have been a vital component to the amazing growth of the craft beer movement and industry in the Knoxville area. Students come from all over the US (and one from Moscow, Russia and Mexico) and therefore, they have placed folks in the brewing and distilling industries all over the US, and beyond. The BDC also provides hobbyist home brewing classes and plays an active role in the community. The BDC will be doing a short presentation and serving the students' beer!
Maker Meetups take place once every other month. Free!

Third Thursday at Maple Hall: Early Knoxville Explorers of the Great Smoky Mountains
Thursday October 17 at 6:30pm
Join Paul James for a look at some early Twentieth Century Knoxvillians who were not only awed by the forbidding mountain wilderness beyond the city, but also collectively shared an intense desire to fully explore those peaks, valleys, and streams, often blazing trails or writing about, and photographing them.
Among them are familiar names including Paul J. Adams and his canine Cumberland Jack, Jim Thompson, Dutch Roth, and Carlos Campbell, as well as a few less familiar, Mary Pomeroy Graves, Brockway Crouch, and Harry Jennison, and others. The world was indeed a smaller place back then as evidenced by many interconnected stories.
Free program. Food and beverages are available from the bar. 21+ as per event policy. Maple Hall is located at 414 S. Gay Street, Knoxville TN 37902. Event held in the upstairs lounge which is also accessible from the Promenade Parking lot on State Street.

Flying Anvil Theatre: Hand to God
Category: Theatre
HAND TO GOD by Robert Askins
After the death of his father, meek Jason finds an outlet for his anxiety at the Christian Puppet Ministry, in the devoutly religious, relatively quiet small town of Cypress, Texas. Jason’s complicated relationships with the town pastor, the school bully, the girl next door, and—most especially—his mother are thrown into upheaval when Jason’s puppet, Tyrone, takes on a shocking and dangerously irreverent personality all its own. HAND TO GOD explores the startlingly fragile nature of faith, morality, and the ties that bind us. Adult language.
“The fearsome critter [Tyrone], who takes possession of a troubled teenager’s left arm in Robert Askins’ darkly delightful play really inspires goose bumps as he unleashes a reign of terror…But he’s also flat-out hilarious, spewing forth acid comedy that will turn those goose bumps into guffaws.” —The New York Times. “Furiously funny…Askins’ most impressive talent is his ability to make us laugh while juggling those big themes that make life so terrifying: death, depression, alcoholism, sexual guilt, emotional repression, religious hypocrisy and the eternal battle between your good puppet and your bad puppet.” —Variety. “HAND TO GOD is so ridiculously raunchy, irreverent and funny it’s bound to leave you sore from laughing. Ah, hurts so good.” —New York Daily News.

Nick Cristano, 29 years old, loves his grandparents. He visits them every Sunday. They drive him crazy!! Nick's parents retired and moved to Florida. His sister got married and moved to California. Nick is left in New Jersey with both sets of his grandparents. Of course they love each other, but how can they possibly understand each other? Nick’s family is Italian-American. They have a saying: "Tengo famiglia," which doesn't translate very directly into English, but it expresses all the depth and complexities of family.
