A splendiferous online affair to benefit Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Knox County

Please join the Advisory Board of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Knox County on Thursday September 17 at noon to honor Dr. Nick Geidner for his outstanding work in producing The Library that Dolly Built.

We are pleased to present a virtual experience with flair. Visit friends at your "table," play Dolly trivia, win prizes, and more! Your ticket price of only $15 will provide books for a child in Knox County for a year.

Blount Mansion's annual Dr. Paul H. Bergeron Constitution Day Lecture will take place online this year. Stewart Harris, a Constitutional Law Professor at Lincoln Memorial University's Duncan School of Law, will be our featured speaker.

As our nation is convulsed by historic racial unrest in the wake of the deaths of black citizens at the hands of police officers, Harris will elucidate East Tennessee's role in America's "original sin," exploring the ways in which African-American slavery evolved in our area from its early days as a frontier outpost of North Carolina, through the failed State of Franklin movement, the Southwest Territory years, and as Tennessee gained statehood in 1796. The program will touch briefly on slavery at Blount Mansion during the Blount family's years at the site.

"Born into Sin: Slavery and the Creation of Tennessee" will take on Zoom at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 17th. The Knoxville History Project has graciously offered to partner with Blount Mansion to facilitate the online program. The Advisory Board for Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Knox County is pleased to present Seeds of Imagination, A Legacy of Readers Luncheon. The online event will be held on September 17 from noon to 1 pm and will include a musical tribute, Dolly Parton trivia, prizes, a VIP mash-up storytime and more. The Board will honor Dr. Nick Geidner, professor of Journalism and Electronic Media at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville for directing and producing "The Library that Dolly Built," a documentary set for world-wide release in Winter 2020.

Tickets for the event are only $15 and can be purchased at Knoxlib.org/seeds. All proceeds go directly to funding books and mailing.

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Knox County is celebrating 15 years and 3 million books mailed to children under the age of five since 2005. The program was launched in January 2005 and was the first major metro area in Tennessee to join the effort.

Early reading instruction has taken a hit amid the current health and economic crisis. With social-distancing requirements and potential shutdowns, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library of Knox County’s mission of getting books into the hands of families with young children is more important than ever.

Since the COVID-19 crisis, all families enrolled in the program have continued to receive a book and newsletter each month. Thanks to the hard work of dedicated staff and postal workers, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library of Knox County continues to mail nearly 20,000 books each month to all registered children. Nearly eight in 10 children from birth to age five in Knox County are enrolled in the program.

Currently, the program’s registration is evenly divided across all Knox County zip codes. For 34 percent of Knox County households, Imagination Library books are the main sources of reading material. Graduates of Imagination Library outperformed those who were not enrolled in the program on kindergarten literacy tests, according to four statewide studies.

"Mailing 3 million books to children sends a loud message that we value reading in this community," commented Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs. "We are committed to helping reduce any barriers for young families to make early literacy a priority. Congrats to the board of Imagination Library for this great milestone."

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Knox County is administered through the Knox County Public Library and relies on donations to fund the books. Each local community in Tennessee must raise 50 percent of the cost of book and mailing with a matching grant from the Governor’s Early Literacy Foundation.

Sometimes winter can feel like a dull time in the cycle of the garden, particularly when comparing it to the lush growth of spring and summer. But if you are diligent about your soil health, it is actually a very important time in the vegetable garden. In this class we will discuss the benefits of utilizing cover crops, how they help your soil, and how they are often excellent for pollinators. You will leave feeling empowered to care for your soil health even better than you have previously. This class does not have any garden materials as part of the fee. Instructor: Whitney Welch

This annual event was founded by Baker Donelson in 2014 and hosted in honor of former colleague, LeAnn Mynatt, who lost her courageous battle with ovarian cancer in October 2018. She was passionate about raising awareness and funds to assist with gynecologic cancer patient needs, awareness and education.

During his time on campus, Prince will work with faculty and students in the School of Art Printmaking Program in the creation of a large woodcut and a stone lithograph. His exhibition is co-sponsored by the Beck Cultural Exchange Center and his campus visit is supported by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity and Engagement and the UT School of Art.
