Join Marble Springs State Historic Site in our historic tavern on October 18th, 2020 from 1-3pm to learn a simple yet delicious pie recipe suitable for an open fire! Our volunteer Fran will walk through step by step on preparing the dough, filling, and how to cook the pie to perfection. This workshop is suitable for all skill levels and recommended for participants aged 12+. Space is very limited so RSVP to save your spot! Tickets are available on Eventbrite.com or Facebook.

Everyone agrees that butterflies are a welcome sight in the garden, but their caterpillars are often ignored and sometimes even eradicated. Join local garden author John Tullock to learn how to support this crucial stage of butterfly development. Identification of common butterflies, their caterpillars, and preferred host plants will be explored. Participants will be given a butterfly host plant to add to their home garden.

Support Pellissippi State's Theatre and Audio Production Engineering students by tuning in to live broadcasts of two radio plays later this month. Theatre companies across the country have had to get creative during the coronavirus pandemic, performing plays over video communication platforms or in open outdoor spaces. But when brainstorming how Pellissippi State Community College could give its Theatre students the experience they need while still adhering to social distancing protocols, Professor Charles R. Miller didn't look to the future of theatre. He looked to the past.

Pellissippi State will present a double feature of two short radio plays -- "The Lone Ranger Redux" and the science fiction piece "Think Like a Dinosaur" -- at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18.

The plays will be performed back-to-back by Pellissippi State students, broadcast live on the College's YouTube channel and recorded for later listening by Pellissippi State's Audio Production Engineering faculty and students. There is no fee to listen.

"The Lone Ranger Redux" is one of the original radio broadcasts of "The Lone Ranger" from 1933, with some updating by Miller and his Theatre students. The second radio play, "Think Like a Dinosaur," is based on the award-winning science fiction novelette by James Patrick Kelly, set in the far future and centering on alien technology and alien races.

Have you always wondered what people do with Air Plants? Well wonder no more! In these two short on-line demos Amanda will show you, first, how to make several designs of hanging planters from clay and decorate them. You will bring them back to be fired, glazed and fired again. After you pick them up you will receive materials to embellish and hang them as well as the link to show you how. No clay experience needed and all materials are included in the cost of this fun on-line project! Participants will need to have access to a computer and be able to pick-up and drop-off tools and materials.

KAFCC brings our most popular one-day workshop to the internet! If you have ever wanted to make your own ceramic mug but do not want to throw on the potter’s wheel, or if you just want to brush up on your handbuilding skills, then this class is for you! No clay experience is needed to join in the fun! You’ll design and make your mug with the help of a recorded demo by Amanda Humphreys. We provide the clay, tools and instruction needed to complete one mug at home. Students will need to be able to pick-up and drop-off tools, have access to a computer and be willing to have fun! KAFCC Staff will fire and glaze the mugs and participants will be notified for pick-up upon completion.

Learn how to make handmade paper from the comfort of your own home! We'll provide paper pulp, paper-making equipment, and an online demo. You'll just need things like extra scraps of paper, seeds, and flowers to make the paper your own, plus access to something absorbent, like old towels or felt, and some heavy objects for the drying process. This fun and easy way to make paper yields some really unique and great results! Participants will need to have access to a computer to watch the demo, and be able to pick-up and drop-off materials.

Fall is the perfect time to make this beautiful leaf tray with all of the fallen leaves. In the online version of this class you can do it right at your kitchen table. Join Amanda as she shows you how to create trays using a press mold to create the shape of your tray. You will also learn how to press the leaves into the clay and apply slip to accentuate their beauty and shape. These techniques will lead to a beautiful finished tray in the end, great to give as a gift or to keep for yourself. All materials are provided and KAFCC staff will glaze and fire the pieces for you. Participants will need to have access to a computer to watch the demo, and be able to pick-up and drop-off materials.

Okay Potter Fans, you asked for an adult Harry Potter class so here you go! Make your very own Hedwig windchime! Amanda will give you a tutorial on how to make Hedwig out of clay complete with letter chimes. Pick your Hogwarts House colors to decorate your scarf with underglaze! All materials included in this price! KAFCC Staff will glaze and provide string to assemble your chime. Participants will need to have access to a computer and be able to pick-up and drop-off tools and materials.

Come and join the spirits for a tour of Downtown Knoxville’s scariest landmarks. The tours, which last approximately two hours each, will visit the sites of some of Knoxville’s best kept secrets. The tour will be about one and a half miles in length. All tours begin and end at James White’s Fort located at the intersection of Hill Avenue and Hall of Fame Drive. Ample free parking is available for tour participants at the Fort. Tours will depart promptly at 7:00pm each evening. Please plan to arrive between 6:30-6:45pm for check in. Each tour will end with a marshmallow roast around the fires at the Fort.

NEW THIS YEAR! Come and hear some of Knoxville’s scariest stories. The fireside chat, which last approximately two hours each, will cover some of Knoxville’s best kept secrets. October 13th Class (Learning Series - The Camera) 6PM-8PM - The Camera will teach you all about analog shooting. Topics covered will be: selecting a camera, camera functions, operating in that mysterious "Manual" mode, metering your subject, lens selection, and more. Pricing for this individual class is $60. This class is limited to 3 participants.

October 17th Workshop (Cyanotype Prints) 11AM-2PM - Learn one of the original photographic processes! Cyanotype is one of the oldest printing processes invented by Sir John Herschel in 1842. In this workshop, you will learn to make a unique one of a kind handmade print by coating various papers with Cyanotype chemicals and developing them in the sun. A materials fee of $40 is due at or before the event. This class is limited to 5* participants.

October 20th Class (Learning Series - The Negative) 6PM-8PM - The Negative will take you inside The Darkroom where you will learn to load and process your film. Pricing for this individual class is $60. This class is limited to 3 participants.

October 21st (Learning Series - The Print) 6PM-8PM - The Print will take you inside The Darkroom where you will learn the basics of enlarger use, burning and dodging and developing finished prints. For this class, you must bring your developed film and B&W photo paper. We suggest buying film and paper locally from F32 near West Town Mall. Pricing for this individual class is $60. This class is limited to 3 participants.

Our mission at the Knoxville Community Darkroom is to educate and provide facilities for our community to experience traditional film processes. The darkroom is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Muse Knoxville Reopens to Public
Knoxville’s children's museum opens doors to visitors for weekend and fall break hours

After being closed for seven months, Knoxville’s children’s museum has reopened for visitors, with exciting new exhibits and ways to play. The museum has taken precautions to ensure the health and safety of their guests. Visitors reserve their playtime in two hour time slots using the online platform, Bookeo. All guests ages 5 and up are required to wear masks and are encouraged to follow safe distancing practices. Muse Knoxville has placed Ionopure air sanitizers throughout the museum, and will also conduct temperature screenings and shoe sanitizing for all guests and employees.

“Our team has worked very hard to reopen safely for children and the adults that love them,” said Ellie Kittrell, executive director of Muse Knoxville. “Play is critical to early childhood development and we can’t wait to share all our new ways to play!.” During their closure, the museum has added two new exhibit areas, and reimagined old favorites for an enhanced play experience.

Muse Knoxville will expand their hours of operation during Oct. 12-16, in accordance with Knox County Schools’ fall break schedule. To view the most updated list of hours, visitors can visit www.themuseknoxville.org.

Zoo Knoxville is waiting to show you and your little ghosties, goblins, villains and heroes a fierce and fabulous time this October.
