Beginners Class - no experience necessary! In this 6 week yoga series, you will gain confidence and more mobility as you are guided thru basic movements and poses. It is an opportunity to have fun and become fit!

Melissa has been yoga practitioner for 20 years, and is a certified Yoga Instructor and graduate of Laughing Bodies Yoga school training. Melissa is passionate about the benefits of yoga for all and helping others move towards greater mobility. Off the mat, a lifelong artist and art teacher for over 3 decades, as well as a business owner and volunteer, Melissa enjoys hiking, gardening, and sharing life's adventures with her husband Johnny. Moving on the mat keeps her moving off the mat!

Muse Knoxville Reopens to Public
Knoxville’s children's museum opens doors to visitors for weekend and fall break hours

After being closed for seven months, Knoxville’s children’s museum has reopened for visitors, with exciting new exhibits and ways to play. The museum has taken precautions to ensure the health and safety of their guests. Visitors reserve their playtime in two hour time slots using the online platform, Bookeo. All guests ages 5 and up are required to wear masks and are encouraged to follow safe distancing practices. Muse Knoxville has placed Ionopure air sanitizers throughout the museum, and will also conduct temperature screenings and shoe sanitizing for all guests and employees.

“Our team has worked very hard to reopen safely for children and the adults that love them,” said Ellie Kittrell, executive director of Muse Knoxville. “Play is critical to early childhood development and we can’t wait to share all our new ways to play!.” During their closure, the museum has added two new exhibit areas, and reimagined old favorites for an enhanced play experience.

Muse Knoxville will expand their hours of operation during Oct. 12-16, in accordance with Knox County Schools’ fall break schedule. To view the most updated list of hours, visitors can visit www.themuseknoxville.org.

Muse Knoxville is a non-profit children’s science museum located in Chilhowee Park with a mission to inspire and empower all children through transformative learning experiences. We exist to serve East Tennessee by bringing hands-on, inquiry-based programming to children ages 6 months to 12 years old. In 2019, Muse Knoxville served over 200,000 individuals throughout 24 East Tennessee counties.

Considered a versatile painter who works in vibrant colors, bringing energy and rhythm to each work, Mike C. Berry creates urban compositions that bend and twist the cityscapes that have become his identifiable style. His paintings consist of gestural brushstrokes and pure bright color. He credits the work of Wolf Kahn, Edward Hopper, and Knoxville artist, Joseph Delaney for encouraging his use of color, line and the cityscape as subject matter.

"Urbanscape" is the latest exhibition of small works by the artist. This body of work features the city of Knoxville as the main subject, but also illustrates the energy of our American urban landscape and cultural expressions. This exhibition includes paintings and drawings, as well as prints and notecards of previous works.

“Cumberland County Woodturners” is the special Themed Gallery Exhibit for October.

Cumberland Woodturners is an organization whose goal is to advance the skills of wood turning on a lathe. Their skill levels range from novice to professional, and the organization has a mentoring program to assist others in improving their skills. Members have access to an extensive library of wood turning resources. On the second Saturday of each month, the woodturners present a hands-on workshop.

The changing monthly displays at the PCAC include a wide variety of art mediums: painting, drawings, photography, ceramics, wood creations, glass mosaics, jewelry, fabric creations, card art and much more! The artwork is available for purchase.

Featured artists are Jennifer Lindsay, Bead Weaving and Donna Conliffe, Mixed Media Artist.

Jennifer Lindsay started doing bead weaving over 15 years ago. She is inspired by the colors and shape of natural to mix colors and beads to make the pieces.

Donna Conliffe: Painting is an evolving process for me often inspired by poetry, music, stories, and experiences. Much of my work is considered narrative or abstract. Working on canvas or wood I begin by adding mediums, multiple layers of paint, image transfers, writing, collage, metal etc., at the start. Mixed media painting allows me to enrich my work in many layers as it progresses. My diverse background, in the area of three dimensional art, of clay, fiber, glass, bookmaking and paper, provides me a variety of methods to incorporate in my work. Combining an assortment of materials and a mixture of techniques encourages my creativity. That’s what art is all about to me.

Awaken Coffee will host an opening reception for artist Lesley Eaton Friday, Oct. 2 from 6-8 pm. Lesley’s recent work is a collection of experimental pieces focused on the application of materials themselves, mostly acrylic and fluid paint, along with water-soluble crayon.

“There is an overwhelming sense of joy to these pieces, even more so when they’re sitting next to one another, and even though they don’t all match and some are quite loud. It’s not unlike living in the middle of a renovation project with four children; it’s joyful cacophony.” – Lesley Eaton.

Join us for First Friday reception for Through the Trees - an exhibition by artist Thomas Riesing. The UT Downtown Gallery will be open from 5-8pm on Friday October 2. Ten visitors at a time will be permitted in the UT Downtown Gallery. Please bring a mask to wear. We look forward to seeing you!

Through the Trees, presents my recent paintings and drawings produced since 2007. The images are thematic and site specific generated from extensive observations and time spent exploring East Tennessee, the Delaware Valley, the Oregon Coast, and Lower Silesia in Poland among others. I respond to the elegance of the trees, and to the light and space that exists between and beyond the persistent verticality of the trees.

It is evident in this exhibition that drawing is an essential component of my studio practice. I utilize drawing not only as a means to develop ideas before and during the painting process, but also as independent works of art. Materially they include graphite, silverpoint, and ballpoint pen. Ballpoint pen is my preferred method of sketching. I respond to its fluidity and to its unique ways of developing relative densities and layers of information. The graphite drawings allow for erasing and reduction while the silverpoint drawings require a more deliberate subtle approach to image and surface development..

Riesing received his BFA and MFA from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. He taught painting and drawing at the University of Tennessee School of Art for 37 years and most recently was the Chair of the School of Art at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana before his retirement.

The show is thematic about the creative process. Each painting highlights a particular emotion from the moment I get the energy, through completing a project, and back to having no idea.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9: Basic ARTiE Training (short for ART in Electronics): ARTiE is an electronic whiteboard that provides many tools to enhance teaching, learning, and presentations at the Art Guild’s Plateau Creative Arts Center (PCAC), 10:00 ¬a.m. – 12:00 noon. Open to AG members only. Class is free-of-charge, but those who want to attend must register for the class. Maximum class size is six students.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13: Paint Along with Sam Hill, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon. Cost is $20 for AG members or $25 for guests. Students should bring their own watercolor supplies.

The League of Scruffy Photographers presents a new exhibition that continues to look at Knoxville through the eyes of 30 talented, local photographers. In a year when many people wish they could have a “do-over” or a time machine to avoid 2020, these photographers examine life surrounding us and how we feel during this “unprecedented time”. And, like many who want to reflect on pre-2020 as if it were the Good Old Days, some of the images are from the not too distant past. This exhibition has been curated by designer Elizabeth Avedon.

WTF is a collection of past and newer work pertaining to the social and political issues that have been happening in our country: a chaotic collection which reflects the social climate of today. Enjoy the disorder and confusion, look around, reflect, ponder, and think to yourself... WTF.

Antuco Chicaiza’s work poetically documents his life, his family and friends, his travels and relocations, and his cultural identities and political beliefs. Like a layered visual diary, his works gather evidence of the events and forces that have affected him deeply. Chicaiza’s early work drew upon his childhood memories in Ecuador. These works were representational in style and emphasized both social injustice and the peoples’ strength and pride. Later, his work described his own journey, reflecting in his words, “any injustice or prejudices I was affected by”. Chicaiza has shown his work in solo exhibitions including at Casa HoLa and Gallery in Knoxville, TN; Clayton Center for the Arts, Maryville, TN; The Rose Center, Morristown, TN; The Nashville International Airport, TN; Latino Arts, Inc., Milwaukee, WI and the Embassy of Ecuador, Washington, DC. His many group exhibitions include “Immigration, Migration, and Movement at Arizona State University” and “A Sense of Place” at the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art, Augusta, GA.
