It's time for another edition of our world-famous cooking class, La Cocina de Centro! Join us virtually on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 5:30 p.m. as our friends Lucia and Tom team up with Claudia to walk us through a traditional Peruvian dish, Arroz con Mariscos a la Chiclayana, and some tasty takes on their favorite Peruvian cocktails.

We can't wait to cook and share a meal with you on Tuesday! While registration is free, your support through contributions is greatly appreciated. During the work week, museums (including Mabry-Hazen House) mostly keep bankers' hours and weekends are often packed with other activities, making it difficult for people who hold day jobs but would like to visit. Night at the Museum is a chance to visit Mabry-Hazen House after-hours on a weekday and drink up a little history. Explore the 1858 historic house in an entirely different light as twilight falls upon Mabry’s Hill, watch the sun set behind Sharp’s Ridge and North Knoxville flicker alight, all while enjoying drinks provided by a local brewery.

This "historical happy hour" is not just about the festivity either; it’s about connecting with history and gathering at the museum to meet staff, volunteers, and local community members while talking about the past in a casual atmosphere. The historic home will be open for self-guided tours and there will be behind-the-scenes access to the walkout basement at 7:30pm. Mabry-Hazen House also will continue its history series where we share an artifact or objects that normally are not on display.

Tickets are $10.00 per adult and visitors under 16 are free. Each purchased ticket includes 2 (two) adult beverages and additional drinks are $5. MEMBERS ARE FREE (include 1 (one) drink)!

We’ll have a fire pit and corn hole available outside and guests are encouraged to bundle up and bring their games, stories, blankets, and camp chairs. Light refreshments will be available for purchase. All proceeds benefit Mabry-Hazen House.

Preceding Night at the Museum at 5:30pm, Mabry-Hazen House will hold its annual Meeting of the Membership. During the meeting, we will elect board members and the foundation's executive officers. Members receive FREE ticket to Night at the Museum. Not a member? Tickets are capped to ensure the safety and health of visitors. Visitors are requested to follow Knox County Health Department guidelines and physically distant from other families/groups. We ask visitors please follow the Five Core Actions recommended by KCHD and the CDC. Face masks and coverings are required within the historic house.

2020 Fall Lecture 3: The Diary of Serepta Jordan: A Southern Woman's Struggle with War and Family, 1857-64

Discovered in a smokehouse in the mid-1980s, the diary of Serepta Jordan provides a unique window into the lives of Confederates living in occupied territory in upper middle Tennessee. Written in a sturdy store ledger, the diary records every day from the fall of 1857 to June 1864. In this abridged version, Jordan reports local news, descriptions of her daily activities, war dispatches, and social life. Orphaned at twelve, Jordan lived in bustling New Providence, Tennessee, on the banks of the Red River. Well educated by private tutors, Jordan read widely, followed politics, and was a skilled seamstress interested in the latest fashions.

This one-of-a-kind volume not only adds a distinct female voice to the story of the Civil War, but also a picture of the slow but steady disintegration of slavery.

Dr. Minoa Uffelman, professor of history at Austin Peay State University, teaches the US South and Women. Her publications include Nannie Haskins Williams: One Southern Woman’s Life of Rebellion to Reconstruction and articles, “Teaching Rural History in an Urban Age” in History of Rural America, “Tomato Clubs as Salvation” in Tennessee Women in the Progressive Era, and “Homer Plessy, Civil Rights Activist,” in The Human Tradition in the Civil Rights Movement. She is currently editing Volume 2 of Tennessee Women in the Progressive Era.

Tue Nov 17, 6-8 PM: Learning Series - The Camera will teach you all about analog shooting. Topics covered will be: selecting a camera, camera functions, operating in that mysterious "Manual" mode, metering your subject, lens selection, and more. Pricing for this individual class is $60. This class is limited to 3 participants.
Wed Nov 18, 6-8 PM: Learning Series - The Negative will take you inside The Darkroom where you will learn to load and process your film. Pricing for this individual class is $60. This class is limited to 3 participants.
Sat Nov 21, 11 AM – 2 PM: Cyanotype Prints - Learn one of the original photographic processes! Cyanotype is one of the oldest printing processes invented by Sir John Herschel in 1842. In this workshop, you will learn to make a unique one of a kind handmade print by coating various papers with Cyanotype chemicals and developing them in the sun. A materials fee of $40 is due at or before the event. This class is limited to 5* participants.
Sat Nov 21, 6-8 PM: Learning Series - The Print will take you inside The Darkroom where you will learn the basics of enlarger use, burning and dodging and developing finished prints. For this class, you must bring your developed film and B&W photo paper. We suggest buying film and paper locally from F32 near West Town Mall. Pricing for this individual class is $60. This class is limited to 3 participants.

The Aslan Foundation welcomes the community to tour one of Knoxville’s most interesting properties. Jack Neely from the Knoxville History Project will lead the tour of the home and its extensive grounds.

Built in 1941, the Eugenia Williams House sits on twenty-four acres overlooking the Tennessee River. Noted Houston architect John Fanz Staub designed the home for Ms. Williams. Staub was a Knoxville native and a childhood acquaintance of Ms. Williams and is noted for his design, among others, of the President’s home at Rice University; Bayou Bay, now part of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Ms. Williams passed away in 1998 at the age of ninety-eight. In her will, Ms. Williams donated the house and property to the University of Tennessee in honor of her father, David H. Williams, a local doctor who gained fortune in the early days of Coca-Cola bottling. In 2020, the Aslan Foundation purchased the property from the University of Tennessee to restore this significant piece of Knoxville’s architectural history and make it accessible to the public.

As work progresses on the home to restore it to its former glory and on the grounds to eliminate invasive plants, the Aslan Foundation invites the public to watch the transformation through tours twice per month.

Tours will last between sixty and ninety minutes and include indoor and outdoor spaces. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and a mask. Tours will be limited to twelve individuals because of the nature of the restoration project. Individuals with accessibility needs should email EWH@aslanfoundation.org. Due to the limited number of tours during restoration, please do not sign up for more than one tour every six months.

Running November 6 thru December 11, ‘Sites & Sounds from Big Ears’ hosts the Norwegian Digital Jazz Festival, a 15-act series highlighting many of the most compelling artists from that nation’s fertile musical scene.

Big Ears is teaming up with Musikkprofil Booking & Management, Oslo’s Sentralen performing arts center, and Hes & Falck to present the series which launches on Friday, November 6 and spans five weeks of programming. Big Ears is the exclusive North American presenter of the festival — the only place in the US, Canada, and Mexico where you can stream the series.

Norway has been home to a rich jazz landscape for decades, an ecosystem that has been documented notably over the years by ECM Records. The festival offers a multi-faceted portrait of the country’s unique jazz scene, over seven double-bill concerts, featuring artists including pianist Bugge Wesseltoft, saxophonist Tryvge Seim, guitarist Eiven Aarset, and trumpeters Mathias Eick and Nils Petter Molvær, plus an evening with pianist Tord Gustavsen — as well as many other essential Norwegian jazz artists. Each performance has been elegantly filmed on-site at the Sentralen in Oslo, Norway.

The public is invited to the opening reception of the Art Guild at Fairfield Glade’s annual People’s Choice Art Show. This event will take place on Friday, November 6, 2020 from 5-7 p.m. at the Plateau Creative Art Center, 451 Lakeview Dr. in Fairfield Glade. All in attendance can view over 80 show entries and cast their ballots for their favorite artwork. If unable to attend the reception, the public can come during regular hours between November 6 through the 25 to vote. Atlas Real Estate of Crossville, Tennessee is sponsoring this event. Cash prizes will be awarded to First through Fifth Place winners at the Awards Ceremony on December 4, 2020.

A unique feature of this year’s art show is that all award ribbons were handmade by a small group of the Art Guild’s talented artists. Each ribbon will be a treasured small piece of art for the winning artists.

An assortment of beverages will be served at this free reception event, weather permitting. Stonehaus Winery is providing a selection of fine wines. The Art Show will feature all genres of art. Please visit the PCAC to see all of this fabulous artwork from November 6th through December 4th. The gallery is open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m.- 4 p.m.

For me the process of creating Art is the place where soul meets body. I look for and discover Art every single day; in manmade structures, the natural world and even while looking down while crossing a street or parking lot. I especially like to document the many and varied details of Knoxville, my hometown. What I see and experience constantly sparks a creative response in me. I use my experience as a pro photographer and pro retouch artist to transform the literal image into a work of Art.

I come from a family that has made beautiful and functional objects with their hands. My mother baked, my grandmother sewed and crocheted, my father and aunt were multitalented. At an early age I could usually be found in my grandmother’s sewing room creating my first designs. Fiber fascinated me and drew me in. It was an avocation for over 50 years. In 2008 I attended a class at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts where I learned to wet felt. Here I realized that wool, silk and other natural fibers could be manipulated into both 2 and 3 dimensional creations in the shape and color of my choosing. Thus I began my current pursuit in the world of fiber. I am inspired by the colors of nature and the simplicity and functionality of pieces created by contemporary artists and designers. Using natural renewable materials and repurposed items allows me to create simple pieces that bring beauty and comfort to the eye.

Shiny, an upcoming exhibition by Professor Emeritus David Wilson at the UT Downtown Gallery, will feature 49 drawings of imitation silver leaf on translucent vellum.

Wilson began his academic career at the UT School of Art in 1985. He uses non-traditional materials and approaches, including process and chance, in his large temporary artworks and drawings. The drawings in Shiny rely on reflected light to reveal the image.

“This exhibition is an opportunity to realize images that have been in my head for a long time and to do so using a process that makes them new.”

All the drawings in Shiny are available for purchase, and proceeds benefit the UT School of Art David C. Wilson Community Outreach Endowment that supports local community engagement projects and initiatives by students and faculty. The endowment was established in honor of Wilson’s service to the School of Art by his long-time friends and School of Art development council members Sarah and Oliver Smith.
