Ijams Nature Center: 31st annual River Rescue

  • November 21, 2020

Category: Festivals, special events, Free event, Health, wellness and Science, nature

Saturday, Nov.21, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Ijams Nature Center’s annual communitywide event focuses on removing trash and tires from 32 sites along the Tennessee River and its creek tributaries from the river’s headwaters in Knoxville to the shores of Loudon County.

“This event was originally scheduled for March 28, but the pandemic forced us to cancel it,” Ijams Executive Director Amber Parker said. “Because the cleanup is outside and volunteers can distance themselves from each other or work with family members and friends in their own ‘bubble,’ it’s something we can do safely to bring the community together and make a difference.”

Volunteers can register using an online, interactive site map accessible from the Ijams River Rescue page on Ijams’ website at https://www.ijams.org/ijams-river-rescue. Slots are filled on a first-come, first served basis, and typically book quickly. The deadline to register is Nov. 14 or until all slots have been filled.

Those wishing to sign up as a group should have all members register individually so that they can complete a waiver and provide personal contact information should Ijams need to communicate with everyone at a particular site.

The 31st annual Ijams River Rescue is sponsored by Home Federal Bank, TVA, City of Knoxville Stormwater Management, First Horizon Foundation, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, CAC AmeriCorps, Knoxville TVA Employees Credit Union, Waste Connections, and the Water Quality Forum.

Jubilee Community Arts: 51st Jubilee Festival

Category: Festivals, special events, Free event and Music

Friday-Saturday November 20-21 Virtual Jubilee Festival on Facebook

For a full half century we have showcased old-time music, ballads, blues, shape-note singing and other area music in this annual event. The 51st Jubilee Festival originally scheduled for late March will take place online. Planning for our first festival started in the fall of 1969 with the implementation of an Appalachian Craft Festival in the spring of 1970 that included a music stage. In the next few years the traditional music component grew and the event came to be known as Jubilee Festival which Jubilee Community Arts has continued to produce each year. Last year's 50th Jubilee Festival was held during a historic flood, but still filled the Laurel for three days with old and new friends. Though the current pandemic forced us to cancel this year's live event, we cannot let a year pass without the Jubilee Festival.

November 20-21 at the Laurel Theater on Facebook

There is no charge for the event but tips and donations will be very much appreciated!

Big Ears presents Norwegian Digital Jazz Festival

Category: Festivals, special events and Music

Running November 6 thru December 11, ‘Sites & Sounds from Big Ears’ hosts the Norwegian Digital Jazz Festival, a 15-act series highlighting many of the most compelling artists from that nation’s fertile musical scene.

Big Ears is teaming up with Musikkprofil Booking & Management, Oslo’s Sentralen performing arts center, and Hes & Falck to present the series which launches on Friday, November 6 and spans five weeks of programming. Big Ears is the exclusive North American presenter of the festival — the only place in the US, Canada, and Mexico where you can stream the series.

Norway has been home to a rich jazz landscape for decades, an ecosystem that has been documented notably over the years by ECM Records. The festival offers a multi-faceted portrait of the country’s unique jazz scene, over seven double-bill concerts, featuring artists including pianist Bugge Wesseltoft, saxophonist Tryvge Seim, guitarist Eiven Aarset, and trumpeters Mathias Eick and Nils Petter Molvær, plus an evening with pianist Tord Gustavsen — as well as many other essential Norwegian jazz artists. Each performance has been elegantly filmed on-site at the Sentralen in Oslo, Norway.
