In the world premiere of Frank Pesci’s “Royal Flush” four sisters (either by blood or common experience) size each other up over one hand of Poker. The fifth - their "Mother" - manages the proceedings, calls the game, and calmly deals. With each card, one of the four sisters reflects on the hand they are dealt - both in the game and in their lives - and, in the process, reveals their "tell." The stubbornness and competitiveness of the four sisters push them all to advance terrible hands while the dealer quietly assembles a Royal Flush. As they try to exploit each other's "tells," the nature of their relationships comes to light in a hilarious and heartwarming fashion.

The Monroe Area Council for the Arts will be hosting two virtual workshops in coordination with Missoula Children’s Theatre and the Monroe County and Sweetwater City Schools. Kindergarten through 12th grade are welcome to participate in these two 40 minute sessions. This is the 22nd year MACA has brought Missoula Children's Theatre to the children in Monroe County. This program is supported in part by grants from the Tennessee Arts Commission, the Monroe County United Way, and MACA Event Fundraisers.

Stage Makeup, Special Effects
Materials You Need-
Raid your adult’s makeup to learn how to create special effects like cuts, scrapes and sunburns.
You Need
• Blush
• A fresh paint brush small tipped (not been used for anything but makeup)
• Red toned lipstick (with purple or brown tones are great too)
• A clean sponge hard or soft
• Makeup with green tones (eyeshadow, etc.)
• Makeup with white tones (eyeshadow, etc.)
• Tissues
• A small bit of aluminum foil from the kitchen
• Eyeliner any neutral color (black, brown, grey)

You Might Also Want
• All other makeup supplies you have! Old Halloween makeup, be creative and ready to explore!
• You might want an adult or a friend to practice.

Learn how you can create a “Tennessee Smart Yard,” at this Zoom educational presentation, co-sponsored by the Tennessee Citizens for Wilderness Planning and the UT Arboretum Society on Thursday, March 11th at 7:00 p.m.

Residential areas are a significant part of our Tennessee landscapes and it is important to make residents a critical stakeholder group in watershed management strategies. The University of Tennessee Extension along with its partners is empowering residents with information on how to nurture a healthy, ecologically-sound landscape that provides benefits both for humans and our environment. The program will be presented by Dr. Andrea Ludwig, Associate Professor of Ecological Engineering in the Biosystems Engineering and Soil Department at the University of Tennessee.

“Our latest efforts have created an online platform for residents to learn from our experts from the comfort and safety of their own homes and at their own pace. With each certified Tennessee Smart Yard, the benefits compound towards greater protection of our valuable natural and water resources in Tennessee,” said Dr. Ludwig.

Dr. Ludwig is the co-director of Tennessee Smart Yards, a sustainable landscaping educational program that seeks to certify private property across the state as “Tennessee Smart Yards.” Dr. Ludwig has worked as the State Stormwater Management Specialist for UT Extension since 2010. In addition, she holds a Ph.D. in Biological Systems Engineering from Virginia Tech.

Next week, we’ll revisit the story of Annemarie Schwarzenbach (1908-1942), the edgy Swiss journalist and novelist who took an unflinching look at Knoxville in 1937, in words and pictures. She published her Knoxville travelogue in a book about America published only in German, in Europe. We’ll show some slides believed to have been taken by the author herself.

Tri-Star Arts is pleased to announce the inaugural exhibition in their new gallery at the historic Candoro Marble Building. A solo show featuring works by artist Althea Murphy-Price (Knoxville, TN) will open on Tuesday, March 9, and run through Saturday, May 8, 2021. A closing reception will be held on the evening of Friday, May 7 from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm.

Althea Murphy-Price uses deception, desire, and ornamentation to form questions on the topics of truth, fascination, and attraction — often using manufactured hair (both synthetic and human) to exercise its role as embellishment and as a signifier of racial identity. In this work, hair functions as both subject and material and represents both assimilation and individuality. This body of her work consists of a variety of approaches to printmaking and sculpture to create works that are inspired by surface and texture. Her lithographic work is made to capture the realistic appearance of hair while screen-printed elements suggest object-like forms. Most recently, Murphy-Price has created 3D printed forms suggestive of wearable hair accessories.

This exhibition will be open to the public, alongside iconic spaces within the Candoro Marble Building, regularly from Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 am until 5:00 pm going forward. Masks and social distancing (6 feet apart) is required. The gallery occupancy is limited to a maximum of 10 persons at a time.

In addition to the exhibition, five Knoxville-based artists have moved into the Tri-Star Arts studios at Candoro and begun their work. The studio artists are Jing Qin, Risa Hricovsky, Casey Fletcher, Jillian Hirsch, and Rachel Sevier Dallery.

Built in 1923, the Candoro Marble Building originally served as the offices and showroom for the Candoro Marble Company. The Aslan Foundation has just completed a restoration of the building. In partnership with the Aslan Foundation, Tri-Star Arts oversees programming at the site.

The Best Reimagined Auction will take place following the competition from March 8-15.

Diamonds in the rough can always be mined at KARM Stores. The challenge, of course, is finding them. Competitors in Rescue & Reimagine are asked to do just that. The challenge is to reimagine, refurbish, or reinvent the item they've purchased in hopes of taking home the TOP PRIZE! Individual and corporate participants will compete to see who will create the best reimagined piece and/or will be our top fundraiser. The top ten Best Reimagined items will be auctioned off to raise additional funds for East Tennessee Children's Hospital and KARM. All proceeds benefit East Tennessee Children's Hospital and Knox Area Rescue Ministries to further their important missions across our community. Warrior Women is the story of Madonna Thunder Hawk, one such AIM leader who shaped a kindred group of activists’ children – including her daughter Marcy – into the “We Will Remember” Survival School as a Native alternative to government-run education. Together, Madonna and Marcy fought for Native rights in an environment that made them more comrades than mother-daughter. Today, with Marcy now a mother herself, both are still at the forefront of Native issues, fighting against the environmental devastation of the Dakota Access Pipeline and for Indigenous cultural values.

Through a circular Indigenous style of storytelling, this film explores what it means to navigate a movement and motherhood and how activist legacies are passed down and transformed from generation to generation in the context of colonizing government that meets Native resistance with violence.

Oil painter Debbie Toney is the Art Guild’s Featured Artist for March, 2021 and she will be honored at the Fun and Wine Friday Reception on March 5th from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at the Plateau Creative Arts Center (PCAC), 451 Lakeview Drive in Fairfield Glade. Debbie’s paintings will be on display along with the monthly members’ gallery artwork exhibit. The public is invited to come and enjoy a glass of wine or non-alcoholic beverage, meet Debbie and other artists, and view a wonderful variety of artwork.

A southerner by heart and a yankee by birth, Debbie Toney brings 30 years of creative experience to her impressionistic/realistic style art. Life on a farm with four children in rural Tennessee and growing up in coastal Connecticut developed a love of the outdoors and the simple beauty of the landscape she paints. Her medium is oils. Her still life paintings reflect a simple time and place of elegance and serenity. She has traveled and studied with many well-known accomplished artists and participated in painting events throughout the country. Debbie is a member of the Art Guild at Fairfield Glade and has shared her love of painting by teaching several classes in the PCAC studio. She is a also a member of Knoxville’s plein aire group, “Tuesday Painters” and has discovered the excitement and challenge of Plein Aire painting, which translates to painting outdoors. She is a member of the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Knoxville; her works have hung in the Emporium. She has participated in Artsclamation, Artist On Location, and Plein Aire South in Apalachicola, Florida. For the past ten years, Debbie has traveled in the east Tennessee area participating in juried shows receiving awards and recognition. A passion for gardening, travel and photography makes for many painting opportunities. Debbie now paints on a daily basis with enthusiasm for and respect of this gift called art.
