We are excited to announce Sarah Moore as our artist for the months of August and September! Her show Yonder features paintings of natural and wild places in East Tennessee. All paintings are one of a kind originals. Please join us for the show opening from 6 to 8pm on Fri Aug 6.

Sarah Moore is a lifelong painter and current Knoxville resident. She earned her M.Arch degree from Washington University in St. Louis in 2012, and was a Danforth Scholar for the duration of her study there. The public is invited to attend the opening reception for the prestigious Judged and Juried Fine Arts Show on Friday, August 6th from 5 - 7 p.m.

Juror-Judge, Carl Gombert was born in Brimfield, Ohio in 1959. He started taking painting lessons at the age of 14 with money he earned delivering newspapers. He completed a BFA in Drawing at the University of Akron and an MFA in Painting at Kent State University. He worked as a stagehand before earning a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Fine Arts at Texas Tech University. He has shown in more than 350 exhibitions across the US and abroad, and his work is in numerous museum and university collections. Since 1993, he has taught painting, drawing, and art history at Maryville College in Tennessee. https://gombertart.com/

Join us in welcoming our new artist of the month, Gabrielle Toledo, on First Friday August 6th, 5pm-9pm, at Casa HoLa!

Ms. Toledo’s paintings will be displayed at the gallery throughout the month of August during weekdays from 10am-3pm until September 1st and online at HoLaHoraLatina.org. During our First Friday event guests may order a delicious tamale, collect a free art activity for children to do at home, browse the Casa HoLa artisan shop, and enjoy the new exhibits presented by the Arts and Culture Alliance.

Elle's photography showcases the unique artistry that can be found in window reflections. Although her images appear to be taken as a double exposure, each image is captured in a single shot that reflects a moment-in-time. She encourages viewers to take a deeper look into her layered imagery, as hidden components are often waiting to be discovered.

Elle has been working as a professional textile artist since the early 1970's. Currently, she is enjoying the challenge of designing fiber vessels. The wide variety of texture and pattern of her fabrics create designs that impersonate other materials; her work falls somewhere between quilting, basketry, pottery, and sculpture. Each unique vessel features distinctive trims and embellishments.

Awaken Coffee will host an opening reception for artist Julie L. Rabun Friday, August 6 from 6-8 pm. Julie is a Professor of Art at Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, TN. She grew up in Knoxville where she attended Bearden High School. Since 2002 she has taught full time in the Carson-Newman University Art Department, coordinates the Emphasis in Graphic Design, and Chairs the department. She also works as a freelance graphic designer and enjoys fine art photography, watercolor, and drawing.

"My artistic process integrates typographic expression within fine artworks. I start with watercolor paper upon which I affix newspaper and/or old book pages. Using this substrate, I apply mixed media to depict a landscape that I have personally visited and photographed. The final image results in areas where letters, words, and printed material are visible."

Good news: it can be anything you want it to be! It just has to be something. This four-week digital workshop is committed to turning your idea into an actual play script. We’ll clamp down on what we like about basic structures for a ten-minute play, and then we’ll get into the fun stuff:

• How words absolutely matter, and also how they don’t matter at all
• How your play looks with no budget, and also with an infinite budget
• How to refine your best ideas, and also how to write without a clue

There will be more covered, too, as well as opportunities to read and discuss scripts in class.
It’s gonna be a good time. Let’s do this thing.

Harrison Young (he/him) is the Tennessee Ambassador for the Dramatists Guild of America and the Literary Manager for the Tennessee Stage Company. As a Theatre graduate from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and Improvisation alum from the Peoples Improv Theater-NYC, he has performed in many comedies and new works which taught him how to write his own comedies. He recently began Next Rung Productions, a program in which he mentors a local playwright each year as they create a new play from scratch.

Debbie Meritsky and Marc Rotman will present a selection of handmade jewelry, mixed media collages, and stained glass all utilizing reimagined, repurposed, and recycled components.

As is our passion, we integrate repurposed items in many of the pieces we create. The selected pieces that we will exhibit will encompass these types of elements to compliment some of the more mainstream "ingredients" in our work. For example, you will find everything from slumped wine bottles, computer parts, and vintage typewriter parts to electrical components, antique buttons, and various "found" items.

A. D. lives in Knoxville and is a Knoxville Area Transit (KAT) bus driver. He studied art intensely in high school and continued taking classes at Roane State Community College. A. D. aims to tell a story with his art, and the recent work he will display features many subjects such as climate change, human trafficking, Harlem Renaissance culture, political and social issues, racism & classism, and more.

Donna Headrick Moore is a photographer and educator from Blaine, Tennessee. She works with pinhole cameras and historic/alternative photographic processes. Her work has been shown in Knoxville and the surrounding areas, as well as across the United States. She is the Co-Director of the Big Camera, a traveling darkroom and Camera Obscura.

I consider myself a memory collector more than a photographer. Memories of my past, people and places, memories of faded dreams, memories of flowers, birds and the sun as it crosses the sky. It takes time to gather them up. When I make a photograph, it feels like a meditation, being in the moment, counting the time for each exposure in seconds, and minutes; sometimes waiting days and months.

The beginning of the Covid-19 Pandemic in the beginning of 2020 was a time of uncertainty and fear. Our governor issued a two-week ‘safer at home’ order at the end of March that ended up lasting much longer. No one really knew what to expect… normal life just stopped. Inspired by the poem “Hope” is the thing with feathers by Emily Dickinson, I began to make postcard-size lumen prints with feathers every day. Sometimes I made only one, and sometimes several – thinking of those who had passed and those who were suffering. It became my daily meditation, and I never stopped at all. It had become such a ritual that it was difficult to think of ending the project. But, after getting my vaccine in March 2021, I knew it was time. We have all come a long way in a year - more than 600,000 people have died and many more still suffer from the virus. It is not over, but we are all in a more hopeful place.

HERDCORE, part photo series and part “Party PPE” fashion line, is both a blithe diversion from and somber look towards the lasting cultural effects of a global pandemic in the age of connectivity. This collaboration between Central Collective co-founders Dale Mackey and Shawn Poynter vacillates between whimsical, unsettling, hopeful and cynical, echoing the range of emotions collectively experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The exhibition features portraits taken throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, embellished masks and face shields, and reflections gathered from the Knoxville community.

Dale Mackey is a mixed media artist whose work has appeared in juried exhibitions by The Visionary Arts Collective and Create Magazine. She curates The Central Collective gallery in North Knoxville and has served on the City of Knoxville's Makers Council and the City of Knoxville's Business Advisory Council, and she co-chaired the Dogwood Arts Regional Art Exhibition in 2014. She is also the owner of Dale's Fried Pies, the hand pie business she started in 2012, and co-founder of The Central Collective, a mixed-use creative space she co-founded in 2015.

Shawn Poynter is a commercial and editorial photographer specializing in reportage, portraiture, and travel photography. His work has appeared in national publications including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Vox and The Washington Post. Locally, Poynter has exhibited work with Dogwood Arts, the Emporium, and Fluorescent Gallery. His studio is based in North Knoxville's Central Collective, which he co-founded in 2015.
