ETHS: Let's Put the Icing on the Cake Event
Category: Festivals, special events, Fundraisers and History, heritage
The Dickson-Williams Mansion is celebrating the 200th anniversary of the completion of the home with an announcement of a major event and fundraiser to be held on the evening of Sunday, August 29, 2021. Festivities will begin at 5:00 p.m. featuring tours and stories of the mansion's history, followed at 7:00 p.m. with the reenactment of the wedding of Catharine Dickson and Dr. Alexander Williams, the original owners of the mansion. The wedding will be followed by a delightful summer supper and celebration with the guests.
Tickets to attend the "Let's Put the Icing on the Cake" event are $100 per couple or $50 for singles, and the proceeds will go to fund replications of 1820's era shutters on the mansion's 18 windows that will put "the icing on the cake," and complete the exterior restoration of Greeneville's historic Dickson-Williams Mansion.
Catharine will be portrayed by Dr. Alexander Williams' third-great granddaughter, Hallie Elizabeth Williams of Knoxville and Washington, D.C., and Dr. Alexander by John Haley, Hallie's fiancé. Catharine's wedding dress is on display in the mansion and Hallie will wear a reproduction created by the Tusculum University Arts Outreach program.
Other re-enactors including Catharine's parents, Dr. Alexander's family and other dignitaries and citizens will also be dressed in period attire. Attendees are welcome to enjoy the fun and wear early 1820's period attire or their own families' attire representative of their ancestors.
Randy Boyd, current president of the University of Tennessee, will portray Dr. Charles Coffin, one of the early presidents of both Greeneville College and East Tennessee College which became the University of Tennessee. Dr. Coffin performed the actual wedding ceremony which took place on August 29, 1823. Randy's wife, Jenny Boyd, an accomplished regional musician, will play the violin during the ceremony.
Please contact Wilhelmina Williams at wcwilliams@embarqmail.com or call 423-257-4235 if you have an interest in sponsoring this event or would like to reserve your tickets.
Long known as the "Showplace of the South," the Dickson-Williams Mansion still commands a strong presence in the town of Greeneville, TN. William Dickson, who immigrated from Ireland when he was 16 years old, and his wife Eliza Douglas, built the Federal style mansion as a wedding gift for their only child, Catharine Douglas Dickson. The mansion was built between 1815-1821 by local craftsmen and designed by Irish architects that the Dicksons brought from his home country. Their daughter Catharine was married to Dr. Alexander Williams on August 29, 1823, at the mansion. Catharine invited all residents of Greeneville to the wedding including many dignitaries. In later years the mansion served as an academy, an inn, and the Greeneville Hospital. Due to the efforts of Greene Countian and local historian Richard Doughty, the Dickson-Williams Mansion & Museum has been restored to its former glory.

The provocative, spoken-word performance artist Minton Sparks will be taking the stage at Flying Anvil Theatre in Knoxville presenting her Open Casket show for a live audience August 26-29, 2021. The performance will also mark the debut of new material from her album "Where Humans and Birds Begin."
The Open Casket program revolves around the people in Sparks' life and a review of the characters that make up a rural community. As they say in the south, "We don't hide crazy. We parade it on the front porch and give it a sweet tea." She invites you to grab a sweet tea, pull up a chair, set a spell and take a listen.

Knoxville Museum of Art: Under Construction: Collage from The Mint Museum
Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Fine Crafts and Free event
The Knoxville Museum of Art presents Under Construction: Collage from The Mint Museum August 20-November 7, 2021. Additionally, beginning August 1, the museum will resume full operating hours for the first time since 2020 (Tuesday-Saturday 10 am-5pm, Sunday 1-5 pm, closed Mondays).
Under Construction showcases the artistic technique of collage, a dynamic and engaging medium in which materials from different sources are cut, torn, and layered to create new meanings and narratives. Featuring nearly 80 works by more than 30 international artists, this exhibition explores the growth and impact of collage from the 1950s to the present. Although collage gained acclaim in the early 20th-century through the groundbreaking work of artists like Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, it experienced a renaissance (particularly in America) after World War II. Charlotte, North Carolina native Romare Bearden is widely credited with rejuvenating and reinvigorating the technique. The exhibition brings together more than a dozen collages by Bearden. It shows how he inspired subsequent generations of artists, including Radcliffe Bailey, Sam Gilliam, Kojo Griffin, Robert A. Nelson, Man Ray, Kristina Rogers, Tim Rollins and K.O.S., Howardena Pindell, Robert Rauschenberg, and James Rosenquist. As is evident in many of the works in Under Construction, Bearden’s legacy continues to serve as a powerful touchstone for younger artists as they use new ideas, materials, and tools to define the medium’s voice in the Digital Age.
In conjunction with the exhibition, the museum will also host Kolaj LIVE Knoxville. From Friday, November 5th, to Sunday, November 7th, 2021, artists, curators, and writers will gather for a weekend of collage making, slideshows, exhibition visits, and storytelling that deepen our understanding of collage as a medium, a genre, a community, and a 21st-century movement. Additional programming surrounding the exhibition will be available at www.knoxart.org.
Under Construction: Collage from The Mint Museum is organized by The Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina. Established in 1936 as North Carolina’s first art museum, The Mint Museum is a leading, innovative cultural institution and museum of international art and design. With two locations — Mint Museum Randolph in the heart of Eastover and Mint Museum Uptown at Levine Center for the Arts — the Mint boasts one of the largest collections in the Southeast and is committed to engaging and inspiring members of the global community. Theatre Knoxville Downtown: The Odd Couple
The Odd Couple (female version)
Performances: Aug. 20 – Sep. 12 (Fri/Sat @ 8pm, Sun @ 3pm) plus Thu, Aug 26 @ 8pm
Unger and Madison are at it again! Florence Unger and Olive Madison, that is, in Neil Simon's hilarious contemporary comic classic: the female version of The Odd Couple. Instead of the poker party that begins the original version, Ms. Madison has invited the girls over for an evening of Trivial Pursuit. The Pidgeon sisters have been replaced by the two Constazuela brothers. But the hilarity remains the same. This show will be set in 1985.
