Trees Knoxville: 4th and Gill Tree Walk

  • August 11, 2021

Category: Free event, Health, wellness and Science, nature

Wednesday, August 11 at 6 PM

Come see the largest and most notable trees of 4th and Gill!
An email will be sent on August 10th detailing where to meet/park.
This is a rain or shine event.
In the case of severe weather, event cancellation information will be sent via email no later than 5:30 on August 11th.
There will be a social gathering after the tree walk...at a local 4th and Gill brewery.
For questions please contact Tracie at treesknoxville@gmail.com

Years ago several residents made a map of the 4th and Gill's largest and most notable trees, and it was lost to time. During the pandemic, the map was rediscovered. Many of the trees had died or been removed. The initial goal of the project was to update the map and add new trees, but it evolved into: identify the largest examples of all the tree species within the neighborhood with the ultimate goal of becoming a registered arboretum.

Sundress Academy for the Arts: "Magical Realism & Cultural Context": A Writers Workshop

Category: Classes, workshops, Free event, Literature, spoken word, writing and Virtual

Led by Jessica Reidy
Wednesday, August 11th
6:00-7:30PM EST via Zoom

Participants can access the event at https://tiny.utk.edu/sundress (password: safta). No advance registration is necessary.

This workshop will challenge the idea of magical realism as something imagined within reality with Marquez’s assertion that “surrealism runs through the streets,” and invite students to consider various cultural perspectives on what is real, which include magic or spiritual phenomena as inseparable from reality. The format of this workshop will be part lecture, and part generative. In the lecture, we will examine works by Rajko Đjuríc, Edwidge Danticat, and Joy Harjo as examples of the magic and the mundane coexisting, and we will examine the cultural elements of the story that inform these specific realities.

The second part of the workshop will be focused on generating material through writing prompts that guide students to writing their own magical realism, incorporating their sense of heritage, place, and cosmology into their work. The goal of this workshop is to free up ideas around what is real and what is magical, allowing students to access all forms of their and their characters’ lived experiences, and create a holistic narrative.

While there is no fee for this workshop, those who are able and appreciative can make direct donations to Jessica via Venmo @jezminavonthiele or PayPal at jessica.s.reidy@gmail.com .

Jessica Reidy (she/they) is a writer and educator with works in Narrative Magazine as Story of the Week, Prairie Schooner, The Kenyon Review online, RomArchive, and other publications. The Emporium Center: Our favorite three "R's - Reimagining, Repurposing, and Recycling

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Fine Crafts and Free event

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present five new exhibitions at The Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from August 6-27, 2021. A free reception with the artists will take place on Friday, August 6, from 5:00-9:00 PM and features live, contemporary music by classically trained musicians who regularly perform with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and Nief Norf ensemble. Most of the works will be for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition by visiting in person or the online shop at www.knoxalliance.store.

Debbie Meritsky and Marc Rotman will present a selection of handmade jewelry, mixed media collages, and stained glass all utilizing reimagined, repurposed, and recycled components.

As is our passion, we integrate repurposed items in many of the pieces we create. The selected pieces that we will exhibit will encompass these types of elements to compliment some of the more mainstream "ingredients" in our work. For example, you will find everything from slumped wine bottles, computer parts, and vintage typewriter parts to electrical components, antique buttons, and various "found" items.
