The fight to gain the vote for women was dramatic, fractious, and sometimes violent. Written by two local playwrights, SuffRAGE celebrates Tennessee’s important role in the ratification of the 19th Amendment while acknowledging those who were left out. Opening on the 101th anniversary (because, you know, there was a pandemic on the 100th) of the vote to ratify, this World Premiere honestly examines the complicated history of women’s suffrage. For all audiences.

When the big centennial for the 19th Amendment was cancelled last year due to Covid, Flying Anvil Theatre had to postpone its own original play. But now SuffRAGE: To Give Voice will open on the 101st anniversary of that historic vote, for a limited five-performance run. The play cleverly links the historical event with today’s efforts to make voting more difficult for some.

The cast includes Yolanda Treece, Jennie Lee-Pace, JoAnn Damiani, Arisa Carero-Spencer, Delyn Filer, Emma Wright, and Rachel Bass and is stage managed by Randy Thompson. The play was commissioned by Flying Anvil Theatre and researched and written by Linda Parsons and Jeannette Brown. They took on the challenge of not only celebrating women’s gaining the vote, but acknowledging the Black suffragists who were left behind.

The theatre requires everyone to be vaccinated and wear masks at all times. In addition, only 60 seats are sold for each performance so audience members can distance themselves within the theatre.

Join Sequoyah Birthplace Museum Director Charlie Rhodarmer for his presentation on the 200th anniversary of Sequoyah’s Cherokee Syllabary. Sequoyah and his daughter, Ayoka, worked on the syllabary for 12 years before introducing it to the Cherokee people in 1821. Rhodarmer will also focus on the museum's work interpreting everything from their blacksmith shop to the operating 1833 Otis Tuft's Acorn printing press they are using to reproduce the bicentennial Cherokee Syllabary. The first printing of the syllabary was on a Union Acorn printing press at New Echota.

This program is one in a series of Brown Bag programs and lectures sponsored by the Albers Family Foundation in memory of Harriet Z. Albers. The East Tennessee Historical Society is privileged to share regional history with our members and the public.

Charlie Rhodarmer has been director of the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum in Vonore, Tennessee since July 2000. He is a North Carolina native and has worked in museum administration and interpretation for more than 30 years. Rhodarmer's passion for history, particularly military stories, has also led him into living history interpretation. He is a respected interpreter of military life from the 1700s to the 1940s.

Drink up a little history during Mabry-Hazen House's Night at the Museum on Wednesday, August 18, 2021 from 6pm-9pm! Attend for a chance to visit the house museum after-hours on a weekday explore the 1858 historic house in an entirely different light as twilight falls upon Mabry’s Hill, watch the sun set behind Sharp’s Ridge and North Knoxville flicker alight, all while enjoying drinks provided by a local brewery.

This "historical happy hour" is not just about the festivity either; it’s about connecting with history and gathering at the museum to meet staff, volunteers, and local community members in a casual atmosphere.

The historic home will be open for self-guided tours and there will be behind-the-scenes access to the bottom floor at 7:30pm to see our restoration progress. Mabry-Hazen House also will continue its history series where we share an artifact or objects that normally are not on display.

Outdoor seating areas will be set-up on the front porch and lawn for groups to enjoy the site outdoors. We’ll have a fire pit and corn hole available and guests are encouraged to bundle up and bring their games, stories, blankets, and camp chairs.

Tickets are $10 per adult and visitors under 16 are free. Each purchased ticket includes 2 (two) adult beverages and additional drinks are $5. A small processing fee is applied to tickets purchased online. Some tickets may be available at the door.

August 17th Class (Learning Series - The Camera) 6PM-8PM - The Camera will teach you all about analog shooting. Topics covered will be: selecting a camera, camera functions, operating in that mysterious "Manual" mode, metering your subject, lens selection, and more. Pricing for this individual class is $60. August 19th Class (Learning Series - The Negative) 6PM-8PM - The Negative will take you inside The Darkroom where you will learn to load and process your film. Pricing for this individual class is $60. This class is limited to 3 participants.

August 23rd (Learning Series - The Print) 6PM-8PM - The Print will take you inside The Darkroom where you will learn the basics of enlarger use, burning and dodging and developing finished prints. For this class, you must bring your developed film and B&W photo paper. We suggest buying film and paper locally from F32 near West Town Mall. Pricing for this individual class is $60. This class is limited to 3 participants.

INNA NASONOVA KNOX
Her paintings are energy and time captured on a canvas. Inna Knox’s vibrant colors and skillful use of a palette knife capture life and movement on the street. Her impressionistic oils sweep the viewer in, as if he or she were part of the scene. Inna Nasonova was well known in St. Petersburg for her elaborate watercolor of The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood. The magnificent painting was one of her top sellers with tourists. She grew up in Russia, attending the prestigious St. Petersburg Art University in interior design and selling paintings to pay her way through school. She later graduated from fashion design school and worked as a designer and seamstress for well-to-do women. But her artistic path didn't end in Russia. She immigrated to the U.S. in 2000, and happily ensconced in her studio in the Tennessee, Knoxville area.

CHARLOTTE ROLLMAN - “We Can Breathe and Now We Can See”
Breathing has been difficult for so many this last year, but together, we have found respite in nature. Painting outside and on location, as I have done with my pieces in this show, connects me with nature and my work takes life and feels complete after I share it with others. For me, each brush stroke is connected to my breath and I feel nature’s healing properties as I work in it. While painting this last year, I've held in my heart those who have struggled to breathe. Some say they can spend hours on their art and lose track of time. For me, painting stops time and I feel completely present in the moment. I see the colors first and the world around me feels even more colorful and bright. I hope to share this experience with you, and wish that we can all breathe easier and see clearer.

Sarah Moore is a lifelong painter and current Knoxville resident. She earned her M.Arch degree from Washington University in St. Louis in 2012, and was a Danforth Scholar for the duration of her study there. The public is invited to attend the opening reception for the prestigious Judged and Juried Fine Arts Show on Friday, August 6th from 5 - 7 p.m.

Juror-Judge, Carl Gombert was born in Brimfield, Ohio in 1959. He started taking painting lessons at the age of 14 with money he earned delivering newspapers. He completed a BFA in Drawing at the University of Akron and an MFA in Painting at Kent State University. He worked as a stagehand before earning a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Fine Arts at Texas Tech University. He has shown in more than 350 exhibitions across the US and abroad, and his work is in numerous museum and university collections. Since 1993, he has taught painting, drawing, and art history at Maryville College in Tennessee. https://gombertart.com/

Elle's photography showcases the unique artistry that can be found in window reflections. Although her images appear to be taken as a double exposure, each image is captured in a single shot that reflects a moment-in-time. She encourages viewers to take a deeper look into her layered imagery, as hidden components are often waiting to be discovered.

Elle has been working as a professional textile artist since the early 1970's. Currently, she is enjoying the challenge of designing fiber vessels. The wide variety of texture and pattern of her fabrics create designs that impersonate other materials; her work falls somewhere between quilting, basketry, pottery, and sculpture. Each unique vessel features distinctive trims and embellishments.

Awaken Coffee will host an opening reception for artist Julie L. Rabun Friday, August 6 from 6-8 pm. Julie is a Professor of Art at Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, TN. She grew up in Knoxville where she attended Bearden High School. Since 2002 she has taught full time in the Carson-Newman University Art Department, coordinates the Emphasis in Graphic Design, and Chairs the department. She also works as a freelance graphic designer and enjoys fine art photography, watercolor, and drawing.

"My artistic process integrates typographic expression within fine artworks. I start with watercolor paper upon which I affix newspaper and/or old book pages. Using this substrate, I apply mixed media to depict a landscape that I have personally visited and photographed. The final image results in areas where letters, words, and printed material are visible."
