Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event
Art Exhibit at Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church
Free and open to the public
Reception Friday, October 22, 6:00 to 7:30 pm. Artists' talks at 6:30 pm.
Shannon Johnson
Shannon Johnson's work is inspired by nature and the creative process. Her paintings are a balance between harmony and contrast, simplicity and accumulation, and stillness and motion. Johnson studied at the University of Tennessee and received a BA in studio art. She taught high school art for 20 years. She exhibits her work at First Friday events and art shows in a variety of locations around Knoxville and regularly on Instagram (@shannondeanajohnson) and Facebook (Shannon Deana Johnson Art). She is represented by dk Gallery in Marietta, GA.
Elle Colquitt: Discovering the Unusual in the Usual
Photographer Elle Colquitt searches for the artistry that can be found within the layered imagery of window reflections. The surrealism within the reflection creates a double exposure illusion. This altered reality of abstract images produces a unique mix of forms and colors. Colquitt is content manager for OutdoorKnoxville.com, where her images showcase the beautiful naturescapes around East Tennessee. She is a member of the Art Market Gallery, Professional Photographers of East Tennessee, Arts & Culture Alliance, Southern Appalachian Nature Photographers, and the League of Scruffy Photographers. https://www.ellecolquitt.com/
Gallery hours: 10-4 Monday, 10-3 Tuesday and Wednesday.

Oak Ridge Art Center: Art à la Carte
Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Film, Free event and Lecture, panel
Art à la Carte, the Art Center’s brown bag luncheon and learning series, meets the fourth Friday in each month at 12 noon. While programs in the series may include artist or gallery talks, primarily we use films. Films typically focus on art history, museum collections, interviews with and/or demonstrations by various artists, and the creative muse or spirit. Programs are free and open to the public. Bring your lunch and a friend to lunch while you learn! The Art Center will provide coffee and/or tea. Currently we are showing several films from the series “Exhibition on Screen.” These movie length films were originally made to be shown in theaters around the world and feature in depth looks at the lives and work of some of the world’s most beloved or illustrious artists featuring historical footage, museum tours, close up imagery of the artists’ work and often interviews with curators, art historians, and occasionally family or friends. Each of the films will be shown in two segments with the center portion of the film repeated to help reacquaint viewers with where we left off the month before.
October 22 will feature Impressionist Renoir, Renoir: Revered and Reviled. The first part of the film was shown in September, so for those who might have missed it, we will begin the film early around 11:15 and let it play in its’ entirety. If you haven’t seen the beginning, you can still catch up!
Oak Ridge Art Center, 201 Badger Avenue, Oak Ridge, TN 37830. Hours: Tu-F 9-5, Sa-M 1-4. Information: 865-482-1441, www.oakridgeartcenter.org
UT Science Forum: Skin-Eating Fungus Threatens Salamander Species
Category: Free event, Lecture, panel, Science, nature and Virtual
Doctoral Students Davis Carter and Wesley Sheley will present “A Skin-Eating Fungus Threatens Salamander Species” Friday, October 22 at noon via Zoom.
A recently discovered fungal organism has caused massive die-offs in salamander species in Europe through infecting and damaging their skin. This organism has not yet been identified in North America; however, it is likely only a matter of time. In their presentation, Carter, a doctoral student in the UT Department of Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries, along with Wesley Sheley, a doctoral student in comparative and experimental medicine, as well as a doctor of veterinary medicine, will discuss the fungal organism and what scientists are doing to manage the fungus, if (or when) it arrives on our shores.
The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

Knoxville Horror Film Fest
Category: Festivals, special events and Film
The Knoxville Horror Film Fest will present its lucky 13th annual weekend of cinematic scares Thursday, October 21 through Sunday, October 24, with events split between Maryville, Tennessee’s Parkway Drive-In and the festival’s home base at Central Cinema.
It was COVID-era necessity that drove last year’s premier programming to the Parkway, but it’s pure pleasure that brings it back for a second year. Thursday night’s lineup will kick off the festival with a triple feature of John Carpenter’s ghostly 1980 classic The Fog, Rialto Pictures’ new 40th anniversary 4K restoration of Joe Dante’s The Howling (1981), and heavy metal horror cult item Trick Or Treat (1986). Friday night will continue the fun with the trailers of the 2021 KHFF Grindhouse Grind-out, followed by another triple feature of Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984), An American Werewolf In London (1981) and SFX genius Phil Tippett’s years-in-the-making Mad God.
These drive-in programs are just the beginning for full KHFF passholders, who will rejoin the festivities through the weekend at Central Cinema. Over the course of Friday afternoon and all day Saturday and Sunday this crew of horror diehards will enjoy KHFF’s storied one-track marathon of short films, feature presentations and special events. Titles confirmed for this year’s feature competition include John Adams, Zelda Adams & Toby Poser’s Hellbender, Richard Bates Jr.’s King Knight, Jim Cummings & PJ McCabe’s The Beta Test, Lee Haven Jones’s The Feast, and Philip Gelatt & Morgan Galen King’s The Spine of Night, mixed in with cult flashback favorites Popcorn (1991) and a 40th anniversary restoration of Andrzej Żuławski’s 1981 classic Possession. (Short film programming, including a dedicated program of local “Tennessee Terrors” submissions, will be announced along with the festival schedule in early October.)
KHFF Festival Passes ($100 standard, $150 deluxe “RIP”), Two Night Drive-In Passes ($45) and Single Night Drive-In Tickets ($25) are available now at Film Freeway.

Important Note: Due to the nature of the event and Central Cinema’s intimate setting, proof of full COVID-19 vaccination will be required of full festival passholders at time of check-in; Thursday and Friday’s drive-in screenings will be open to the public regardless of vaccination status.

bad water: Angelique Heidler's show Piselli
Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event
Attraction and repulsion, innocence and violence, obsession and indifference; in her new body of work, Paris-born artist Angelique Heidler investigates the paradoxical dualities embedded within mainstream depictions of both femininity and romance. In her signature style of adorning the painted canvas with personal objects and images through collage and sublimation printing techniques, Heidler brings together these contrasting forces, highlighting their hybridity through a series of playful compositions.
Touching on themes of childlike fantasy, consumption, and indulgence, Heidler’s wide scope of aesthetic reference speaks to the highly nuanced construction of gender and the self through late-captialism’s endless horizon of media representation and branded products. The exhibition’s title, Piselli, represents Heidler’s tongue-in-cheek humour well, simultaneously referring to the Italian word for green peas as well as children’s slang for male genitalia.
BAD WATER, 320 E. Churchwell Ave, Knoxville, TN. Open during receptions & by appointment. Info: writetobadwater@gmail.com, https://instagram.com/bad__water, or https://badwater.gallery/
