Emporium Center: Stephen Brayfield: Pawtraits and Mewsings

Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event

A free reception with the artists will take place on Friday, March 4, from 5:00-9:00 PM and features music by Partners in Rhyme (Cal and Richard). Most of the works will be for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition by visiting in person or the online shop at www.knoxalliance.store.

In response to recent interest, I’ve put together a collection of realistic portraits - or whimsically, “Pawtraits” - that exhibit my ability to capture the essence or soul of our furry family members: a cat who’s claimed an antique chair as his own or a dachshund who sees herself as a much larger dog. I love painting animals in classical poses looking regal or making funny faces. For most of these works, rather than stretch my watercolor paper, I mount it onto cradled wooden panels normally used to paint on with oils. After the painting is completed I seal it with cold wax medium thereby eliminating the need for a frame and glass. It can then be displayed more like an oil without any interference between viewer and art. https://www.facebook.com/PetPortraitsbyStephenThomasBrayfield/

Clarence Brown Theatre: Blood at the Root

Category: Theatre

By Dominique Morisseau
Directed by Tracey Copeland Halter

March 4 – 13 | Lab Theatre

“I can ruin your life with a stroke of my pen.”

A Black high school student sits under a tree seemingly reserved for whites. The next day, three nooses appear on the tree. A few weeks later, a fight erupts. The Black students are charged with attempted murder. Inspired by the true story of the Jena 6, racial double standards and inequality in the criminal justice system are explored in this contemporary drama from the playwright of Detroit ’67. The production uses strong language, racial slurs, and symbols of violence to accurately depict the story of the Jena 6.

The Marco Institute for Medieval and Renaissance Studies: 18th Annual Marco Symposium

  • March 4, 2022 — March 5, 2022

Category: Festivals, special events, Free event, History, heritage and Lecture, panel

“Religious Communities Across Space and Time in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East”
March 4-5, 2022

The Marco Institute’s 18th annual symposium brings together scholars of the medieval and early modern world to examine how religious communities conceptualized and imagined themselves. The symposium will feature specialists whose geographic interests include Africa, the Middle East and Europe. “Community,” therefore, will be interpreted broadly to include not only world systems such as oikumene, ummah or ecclesia, but also local communities such as individual mosques, monasteries or synagogues. Furthermore, papers will investigate how interactions between religious communities shaped their identities and experiences. The symposium will explore the diversity and complexity of pre-modern notions of religious communities across a wide range of geographic, confessional and temporal boundaries.

The “Religious Communities” Symposium is hosted by the Marco Institute for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at UT. The 2022 symposium will be held in person at the University of Tennessee. The event is free and open to the public. https://marco.utk.edu/symposium/

Knoxville Civic Auditorium: Cody Jinks

  • March 4, 2022

Category: Music

Friday, March 4, at 7 PM // Civic Auditorium

Cody Jinks is the kind of artist who thrives being on the road, traveling from city to city playing shows night after night. In a typical year, the singer-songwriter isn't at home longer than five or six weeks at a time. That road-heavy approach, when coupled with a ferocious live show, has helped Jinks amass a loyal fanbase and carve out a successful career on his own terms as an independent artist.

In fact, he won "Independent Artist of The Year" at the 2020 MusicRow Country Breakout Awards and earned the most radio spins for an independent artist last year with songs such as “Ain’t A Train” and “Same Kind Of Crazy As Me." These honors are just the latest in a long list of accolades Jinks has received since the release of his gold-certified 2015 breakthrough album, Adobe Sessions, which featured the platinum-certified, fan-favorite single, "Loud and Heavy."

His 2016 full-length I'm Not the Devil also reached No. 4 on the Billboard Country Albums chart, while 2018's Lifers and a pair of 2019 albums (The Wanting and After the Fire) reached No. 2 on the same chart. On top of this, Jinks has nearly 2 billion streams to date across platforms, to go along with his 2.18 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

Much of this success is due to Jinks' songwriting, which is refreshingly raw and honest about life's ecstatic ups and agonizing downs. And so, in early 2020, when faced with being off the road for an indefinite period due to the pandemic, Jinks decided to hunker down, stay busy and work on his craft. "My wife and I were sitting on the front porch and I said, 'You know what I'm going to do with this time? I'm going to become a better songwriter. I don't know how long the lockdown is going to be, but I need to reach out to songwriters I haven't written with before and pick their brains. I need to get better at my craft. I need to learn from some other people.'"
