Bridge Refugee Services: World Refugee Day 2022
Category: Culinary arts, food, Festivals, special events, Free event, Health, wellness and Kids, family
In celebration of local diversity and the contributions refugees make to the community, Bridge Refugee Services (in partnership with Village Church) is hosting an annual celebration of World Refugee Day on Saturday, June 18 from 11am – 2pm at Village Church, 1705 Merchant Drive.
In the first return to this favorite in-person gathering in two years, the community-wide event will feature international foods, vendors, and information from organizations assisting in refugee resettlement. Refugees in East Tennessee have arrived from countries including Democratic Republic of Congo, Vietnam, Myanmar, Ethiopia, Burundi, Iraq, Venezuela, Colombia, Sudan, Afghanistan, Ukraine, and many others.
Bridge Refugee Services is the only refugee resettlement agency in East Tennessee with offices in Knoxville and Chattanooga. Bridge will be gratefully accepting donations to offset costs, and funds will go to assist their refugee clients.
"Bridge has been resettling refugees in East Tennessee for 40 years," said Noah McBrayer Jones, Development and Communication Manager of Bridge Refugee Services. "World Refugee Day is an opportunity for all members of the community to come together and to celebrate the incredible addition these new residents make to the area's group dynamic."
Bridge invites interested international vendors and affiliate organizations to contact njones@bridgerefugees.org to sign up.
This physical celebration is part of international recognition surrounding World Refugee Day on June 20 – drawing attention to the refugee crisis across the globe. Worldwide there are more than 20 million refugees which natural disasters, persecution, or war have forcibly displaced. More than half of these are children. Despite these numbers, less than 1% of these refugees permanently resettle in new countries of residence. Since the program's establishment in 1980, the United States has accepted 2 million refugees. At present, the US is rebuilding from accepting 30,000 refugees per year, the lowest per year numbers in the history of the program.
More information about the physical event is available at https://bridgerefugees.org/wrd2022 and on Facebook at https://facebook.com/events/725760178458898. A digital celebration broadcast will also air on June 20 on Bridge's YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyPCUc9V2QkqtDQyHocqL3w following the pattern of 2020 and 2021.

Knoxville Children's Theatre: Snow White
Category: Kids, family and Theatre
The play will be performed Thursdays and Fridays at 7 PM, Saturdays at 1 PM and 5 PM, and Sundays at 3 PM.
Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who is the fairest of them all? Well, we all know the reply to that, and soon we’re caught up in the spell of this enchanting classic. The vain and wicked Queen seeks to destroy her rival in beauty. The Dwarfs are obstinate, generous, mean, kind, and totally appealing. The Prince is a true Prince, sometimes foolish, always brave, and Snow White is as lovely and lovable as legend says.
The play is performed by 14 talented young actors, from ages 9 to 15. Snow White will be played by KCT veteran Macy Moon with the Prince portrayed by Patrick Harrison. They will be joined by KCT veteran Elliot Hager who will play the witch and Lily Segars who portrays The Mirror. Olivia Birkbeck will play the princess.
The show is directed by Guest Director Chris McCreary.

East Tennessee Historical Society: You Should Have Been There World's Fair Exhibition
Category: Exhibitions, visual art, History, heritage and Kids, family
In celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the 1982 World's Fair, the Museum of East Tennessee History announces the opening of a new, one-of-a-kind exhibition, "You Should've Been There!," in the Rogers-Claussen Feature Gallery from March 19 to October 9, 2022.
The exhibition’s theme is not only a nod to the international exposition’s marketing catchphrase, “You Have Got to Be There! The 1982 World’s Fair!,” but also an acknowledgement that four decades removed, there is a generation of East Tennesseans who were not alive to experience the historic event.
Organized by the East Tennessee Historical Society and the Knox County Public Library, “You Should've Been There!” traces the fair’s development from conception to the pivotal moment when The Wall Street Journal referred to Knoxville as a “scruffy little city” and questioned its ability to host an international event. More than 11,000,000 visitors from around the world were informed and entertained in the various pavilions, exhibitions, and attractions put on by 22 countries and some 50 private organizations. Popular souvenirs were shirts and buttons proclaiming, “The Scruffy Little City Did It!”
The fair’s theme, “Energy Turns the World,” played to the region’s reputation as a technology and science center. For example, it was at the 1982 World’s Fair that users were able to try out a touchscreen for the first time. Elo, a Knoxville-based company, debuted the touchscreen technology, then known as "talk back" computers, in the United States Pavilion. To honor this spirit of innovation, “You Should've Been There!” incorporates engaging touchscreens alongside displays of original fair materials from pickle pins to deely bobbers and everything in between.
