Join us as we open three spectacular private properties for the Summer Featured Gardens event, June 24th-25th! Each garden is unique in design and offers a variety of plant material, beautiful summer blooms, and special landscaping features. We are honored that these residents have generously opened their properties to the public as a part of our annual celebration of East Tennessee's natural beauty.

This event is free though a $5 donation per garden is suggested. Tours are self-guided although Dogwood Arts staff will be on-site for questions.

ANDERSON ESTATE
• Free parking & shuttle to the garden from Sevier Heights Baptist Church (3140 Maloney Rd, Knoxville, TN 37920)
Set on a hilltop overlooking the Great Smoky Mountains, Anderson Estate is a plant collectors garden. This young, but ever-expanding garden, features an extensive hosta collection with over 500 varieties and also includes a wide assortment of azaleas, camellias, rhododendrons, conifers, and a native plant display garden. The kitchen garden with 11 raised vegetable beds, fruit trees, and berries is home to an apiary. The property also includes a cemetery from the 1800’s, an Enchanted Forest, and a professionally landscaped frog haven with a bubbling brook and waterfall.

SAVAGE GARDEN

Savage Garden was inspired by Arthur Savage’s visit to his native England. Upon his return, he began building stone walls, ponds, arbors, and multiple follies. After many years of extensive restoration, including rebuilding stone walls and borders, constructing faithful copies of the original arbors and gates, and planting thousands of trees, shrubs, and perennials, Savage Garden is once again the kind of magical place envisioned by Arthur Savage. Early Summer highlights hundreds of blooming hydrangeas, native azaleas, and countless perennials. Savage Garden is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

MARY'S GARDEN
• 513 Altamira Drive, Knoxville, TN 37934
Affectionately named by her husband Michael, Mary’s Garden began in 1993 and was set on a level site surrounding their home which included many native dogwoods. Over the years, the garden has grown to include many roses and perennials in the sunny front and side yards. A variety of hydrangeas and woodland plants fill the back gardens. Lilies and roses abound in the summer garden.

There is limited parking at each garden, and guests will be admitted on a first-come-first-served basis. These private properties require extensive walking and are not handicap accessible. Comfortable or hiking shoes are recommended.

(Ages 16+) If you're looking for a water adventure, join Ijams for a beautiful morning or evening kayak trip on the Tennessee River and learn about animals, history and scenery! These are small-group programs, so don't wait to save your spot.

It’s the 10th anniversary of Ijams’ partnership with Central Cinema and Knoxville Horror Film Fest!

Grab your favorite blanket or lawn chair and join the film festivities! Doors open at 7 pm and movies begin at dark (~9 pm). Food trucks and beer garden will have tasty meals, snacks, and beverages for purchase. NO COOLERS AND NO OUTSIDE ALCOHOL PLEASE. Dogs are allowed, but must be on leash at all times.

These events are on the Ijams Visitor Center lawn. In case of inclement weather, the event will move to the Ijams Homesite under the tent. Tickets are $10 per person or $36 for a family four-pack. Space is limited per screening. Purchasing tickets ahead of time is highly recommended. Walk-up tickets may not be available.

Josh Lovelace (aka Young Folk), singer-songwriter and member of the Grammy nominated rock band NEEDTOBREATHE, released his first family album Young Folk in 2017 followed by Growing Up in 2019. His albums have received Parents’ Choice and NAPPA awards and he has been a featured at NPR, Billboard, Southern Living, Paste, Parade, Huff Post as well as many other national and local news outlets. Born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee, Larry Blair’s vocal prowess ranges from velvety and sultry to raw and soulful, and his stage presence is off the charts. He started his musical career as one of the lead vocalists in a group he and his brothers formed, called “The Blair Brothers”, becoming well known in many local circuits. He later formed a solo project that evolved into the current BlairXperience which has a boundless range of music from Pop, Gospel, R&B, Blues, and Soul.

To open the show, Vere Henry, from St. John's, Antigua, and leader of Carib Sounds Steel Band, will take us on a brief but soothing and shimmering tour of the Caribbean as he plays the steel drums.

Flying Anvil Theatre, is preparing to present A Kid Like Jake this pride month. The play tells the story of parents Alex and Greg as they attempt to navigate enrolling their 4-year old into the competitive New York City kindergarten landscape. Jake has an affinity to take on the role of “princess” during playtime, and matters are complicated when he starts showing aggressive behaviors at school interviews.

The adults in Jake’s life are all grappling with the idea that Jake may be transgender. “Jake reminds us that labels can help us put order to the world around us, but at what cost?” says director Doug James, who has approached the play with more questions than answers. “We actually never see the character of Jake in the play- just the adults speaking about and for him. I just want to know, and I think it’s up to the audience to decide, what’s best for the child?”

James, Theatre Teacher at Austin East High School and Adjunct Professor at Maryville College, says that the spectrum of what gender truly means is at the center of national discussion. "No matter what side you fall on this issue, the discussion of gender cannot simply be avoided,” he says. “The beautiful aspect of this play is that it does not preach, but asks questions.” A line that James says perfectly sums up the play is from the preschool principal. “All I'm saying is, we don't always have to know the answers, as long as we keep listening."

A Kid Like Jake, sponsored by Positively Living and Choice Health Networks, runs at Flying Anvil Theatre from June 16-26, and tickets start at $27 for adults and $15 for students.

Each summer for the past few years the Printmaking Program in the UTK School of Art presents an exhibition of recent prints by undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff. The works represent a wide variety of methods and approaches, including intaglios, relief prints, lithographs, and screenprints, reflecting a diversity of ideas and approaches. The MFA Program in Printmaking at UTK is ranked #3 among public universities nationally by US News and World Report.

The Art and Architecture building is accessible to the public through the summer weekdays from 8 am-5 pm.
