Songs and Stories from the Bird and the Book, 1509 E Broadway Ave, Maryville, TN its ongoing series of concerts and conversations with another free show at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 20th with special guests The Waymores. As always, this event offers an opportunity not only to share an intimate listening experience with the artists performing their songs in stripped down settings, but also to learn about the craft and creativity that goes into their music and performance.

Think "The Actor's Studio," but geared to musicians.

American Songwriter described the husband and wife Atlanta-based duo Willie Heath Neal and Kira Annalise as bringing to mind a rebooted incarnation of Conway and Loretta, Porter and Dolly, and Johnny and June... sharing instead songs flush with aptitude and appeal... It's an unapologetic approach that Waylon, Willie, and Johnny helped pioneer early on and would likely approve of even now." In fact, The Waymores play authentic country music with an Americana flourish, combining elements of folk, blues and Honky Tonk into an instantly recognizable sound. Willie Heath Neal's husky baritone and the warm alto of Kira Annalise complement each other perfectly. Their lush harmonies, and down home lyrics reflect an easy-going sense of humor that makes every crowd feel like a room full of old friends.

The singing, songwriting and guitar-playing duo met 14 years ago at a bar in their home state of Georgia. "We were singing covers in a freewheeling ensemble called the No Count Palookas," Annalise recalled. "We both had touring bands, which can stretch you financially. Darkhorse Entertainment, LLC, invites you to participate in the 7th Tennessee Medieval Faire in Harriman. The festival is seeking costumed street characters and period-related vendors to recreate the early Middle Ages (circa 500) in a theatrical way. The theme is “Live the Age of Chivalry,” performed by interactive characters from the legend of King Arthur.

For those interested in participating as street characters, video auditions will be held by scheduled appointment from July 16-22. Auditioners are asked fill out the audition form, email a recent selfie, and schedule a time to audition. Those auditioning should be prepared to sing, speak in a British and/or Scottish accent, and read a script. Having theatrical experience and an outgoing and friendly disposition are helpful. The Tennessee Medieval Faire is an outdoor themed entertainment-oriented interactive family-friendly festival. Dates are October 1-2, 8-9, 15-16, 2022. Hours are 11am-6pm ET. Tri-Star Arts is pleased to announce the next exhibition in their main gallery at the historic Candoro Marble Building. A solo show, Aerial, featuring recent work by artist Mary Laube of Knoxville, Tennessee opens Friday, July 15, 2022 and will run through Saturday, September 3, 2022. This show also features a new music video with the Warp Whistle Project (Mary Laube + Paul Schuette).

A public reception will be held on Friday, September 2, 2022 from 5:00- 8:00 pm (artist in attendance). Laube will participate in a Q&A conversation with Brian R. Jobe (Director, Tri-Star Arts) prior to the reception on Friday, September 2 at 3:30pm in the main gallery.

Mary Laube (born Seoul, Korea, 1985) is Assistant Professor at University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She received her MFA (2012) from The University of Iowa, and her BFA (2009) from Illinois State University. Past exhibitions include Ortega y Gasset Projects (NYC), VCU Qatar (Doha), Monaco (St Louis), The Spring Break Art Show (NYC), and Coop Gallery (Nashville). Artist residencies include Yaddo, Wassaic Project, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Vermont Studio Center, and Stiwdeo Maelor in Corris, Wales. Past publications include Art Maze Mag, Maake Magazine, and New American Paintings. In 2019, Mary received the Contemporary Visual Art Bronze Award from AHL Foundation. She is a co-founder of the Warp Whistle Project, a collaborative duo with composer Paul Schuette. Together, they make work that merges kinetic stage sets with music performance.

The Handweavers Guild of America 2022 is bringing their international fiber art biennial conference, Convergence®, to Knoxville July 15-21, 2022, to the Knoxville Convention Center. HGA is an international association created to encourage excellence, inspire creativity, and preserve fiber arts traditions through education and community. They invite weavers, spinners, dyers, basket makers, and all fiber art enthusiasts to join their guild.

Marketplace & Demonstrations

Shop for fiber art supplies and original handcrafted goods while enjoying demonstrations. Exhibitors showcase a wide array of yarns, books, and equipment, including specialty items usually only available online. Demonstrations, lectures and activities will take place on the stage in the Marketplace between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM. A Silent Auction is open during Marketplace on the many fiber goodies HGA has collected. All proceeds benefit HGA’s Fiber Trust.

Small Expressions is an annual juried exhibition produced by the Handweavers Guild of America, Inc. and showcasing contemporary small-scale works (not to exceed 15 inches in any direction) using fiber techniques in any media. Small in scale but visually compelling, this exhibit features work that speaks to the intricacy of expression, intimacy of design, thoughtful communication, and visual excitement. The artists in this exhibit create a big impact through small pieces.

For some, fabric can hold memories – your grandmother’s quilt, the dress you wore to prom, the baby booties you knit for your first child, even the wine stain on your best tablecloth. Each represents a memory spun into the fabric of one’s life.
