Autumn in Tennessee

Dennis Sabo is an internationally award winning photographer specializing in contemporary fine art abstract, landscape, and seascape photography. His painterly and emotionally charged photographs are reminiscent of the best works of art by the legendary Impressionists while capturing light and its effect on the landscape with a contemporary vibrancy and energy. Most of his nature imagery is a microcosm of a subject so that collectors can relate to the artwork regardless if they are from Tennessee or elsewhere. Dennis's fine art has been included in solo and group gallery exhibitions, commercial installations and private home collections throughout the United States and internationally, and also in books, magazines, and in multimedia worldwide including NOVA, PBS, Canon U.S.A., Inc., Portfolio Magazine Florida, and Blue Planet.

Janis Proffitt, Wood
Janis is a native Knoxvillian. Her roots run deep in the Smoky Mountains. Her Great Great Grandfather owned a sawmill in the Greenbrier area of the National Park. For over 25 years, she along with her sister ran their Dad’s woodshop in Pittman Center, TN. With her rich Southern Appalachian Heritage, she creates both traditional and contemporary wood turnings. In the 1980’s she taught herself wood burning that she incorporates on to her pieces. Her work comes from the Head, the Heart, and Hands.

Awaken Coffee will host an opening reception for artist Sara Barrett Friday, November 4, from 6-8 pm.

East Tennessee native and mixed media collage artist Sara Barrett lives at the foothills of the Smokies with her husband of 14 years, their 12-year-old daughter, and two cats. A full-time creative thinker, Barrett repurposes used and discarded materials of all types in her artwork. She combines everything as digital collage or collage on canvas.

Barrett’s artwork has been exhibited at both The Emporium and The District Gallery in Knoxville, and at The Ford Studios in Marion, Va. Her work has also been published in print and online in The Tatterhood Review, Wild Roof Journal, Halcyone/Black Mountain Press, Button Eye Review and Tempered Runes Press.

Barrett is a 2022 recipient of The Bailey Opportunity Grant through The Arts and Culture Alliance of Knoxville.

Anthology II is the second installment of a look at the past few decades of my work. I picked this collection to highlight some of my personal favorites, because they are visually appealing, remind me of a special adventure, or represent a significant point in my artistic journey. Viewing art is always personal; it helps to have a nugget of insight into its development, and thus I have provided the audience with access to audio files of my commentary on each painting.

Ted Richards was born in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains, has resided in New Jersey's Ramapo Mountains, and now calls the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee home. His interest in art began as an adolescent and has focused on painting in acrylics for over 40 years. He enjoyed a successful career in Information Technology and incorporates his analytical abilities into the creative development process. Richards enjoys sharing memorable moments from his life's adventures through his work; incorporating elements of color theory, he uses bold, expressive color on large canvases to convey the mood of the experience. Whether he employs a fresh approach to realism or ventures into abstraction, he invites the viewer to join him on his journey. His work has been featured in both group and solo exhibitions in Northern New Jersey and Eastern Tennessee.

Old Growth features work by Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts' current Artists-in-Residence: Yael Braha, Megan Koeppel, Anela Ming-Yue Oh, Jada Patterson, and Tyler Quintin. The Arrowmont Artists-in-Residence Program, started in 1991, provides early career, self-directed artists time, space and support to develop new work and be an active part of the Arrowmont community. Each year, five artists are selected to participate in the eleven-month program, which begins mid-June and continues through late May of the following year. Residents receive a monthly stipend, housing and meals, and a private studio as well as exhibition opportunities, teaching experience, and professional development. The program encourages applications from early career artists who embrace community, are highly self-motivated and enjoy working in a team environment.

+ Working at the intersection of craft, art, and multimedia, Yael Braha creates functional, sculptural and installation ceramic work. + Megan Koeppel was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She is a quilter and textile artist with a background in painting, exhibition installation, and gallery administration. + Anela Ming-Yue Oh is a multidisciplinary artist with a BFA in Studio Art from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. + Jada Patterson is an artist and gallerist born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She is a graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics and Art History. Cute AF Vol. 2 will feature ceramic works by Kendra Barth and painted wooden cutouts by Beth Meadows. This show is a continuation of a collaboration of cuteness between the two artists. The idea for this exhibition began several years ago when Meadows noticed shared themes of cuteness between the two artists' bodies of work. She envisioned a distinguished gallery setting to house their most adorable pieces entitled Cute AF as a nod to some of their more subversive themes. At its heart, the intent of this show is to delight. The exhibition showcases four themes shared by both artists: kitchen, cats, forest friends, and snacks.

Kendra Barth is an artist and ceramicist working in Knoxville under the name Blanket Fort Studio. She creates funky handmade ceramics and sculptures that showcase her unique, childlike, colorful, and illustrative style. Her work often explores themes of nature, surrealism, and humor. She was born in McAllen, TX and received her BFA from West Texas A&M University. She now lives in Knoxville with her partner Andrew and daughter Hazel.

Beth Meadows is an artist living and working in Rockford. She received her BFA in Studio Art with a concentration in Drawing from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 2007. She has made and sold artwork ever since, inspired by dark humor, high-end design, and a fascination with mixing high and low art. She explores themes of aspirational living, new versus old, folk versus academic art, the power and struggles specific to women, and mental health.

This new exhibition showcases a mother and daughter who create fabric sculptures on canvas, in pairs, showing the different viewpoints on the same art at a different age. Marta Czéh and Panni Czéh are originally from Hungary but have been in Knoxville for the past five years.

Marta Czéh lived in Hungary with her family until 2017 before emigrating to the U.S. She is a Kindergarten teacher by trade and has written a textbook, short stories and bedtime stories for children as well as invented board games. Since a young age, she enjoyed drawing, painting and craft work.

Panni Czéh has practiced theatre, dance, singing, painting and ceramics. Her passion for expressing feelings and capturing moments in life that people don't notice is what fuels her creativity. She graduated from Miami University of Ohio.

Within the last year, I took up photography as a hobby to heal. I found the more I embraced life's tumultuous events and opened myself up in gratitude to the world around me, the more the world revealed much for which to be grateful. I began noticing beauty in the simplest things, and even envisioned in my mind's eye the potential for beauty to exist in the ordinary... so I snapped the picture and then created what I envisioned in my mind. I am not a professional or seasoned artist by any means, but in a season of growth, I am finding myself creating what feels like art. I am pleased to present photographs of images from around Virginia, Maryland, and Tennessee, all captured using an iPhone camera.

Jennifer Henszey was born and raised in Cambridge on Maryland's Eastern Shore. After graduating high school, she attended Virginia Tech where she received her commission as an officer in the United States Navy. She served as a naval Surface Warfare Officer from 2008 to 2021. She graduated from law school at the University of Tennessee in 2018 and recently returned to the University of Tennessee in 2021 to pursue a Masters in Social Work. She proudly claims Knoxville as her permanent home where she enjoys the people, music, and culture, all of which also inspire her to create.

Byron McKeeby (1936-1984) was an American printmaker known for his lithographs. Aside from being a widely acknowledged and exhibited artist, McKeeby taught printmaking at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville from the fall of 1965 until 1984. He laid the foundations for the printmaking program at the university and his legacy lives on today.

Begun in 1947 by C. Kermit "Buck" Ewing, the School of Art at the University of Tennessee is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. Curated by Ewing Gallery staff members, this exhibition features ephemera and artwork from the Ewing's permanent collection spotlighting important moments and historic individuals in the history of the School of Art.

Join us for a reception on Thursday, November 10 from 5-7pm.

The Ewing Gallery will close November 23 - 27 for the Thanksgiving break.
