UT Humanities Center Conversations & Cocktails: African Descendants in Mexican History
Category: Free event, History, heritage, Lecture, panel and Virtual
Nov. 17 @ 7 PM via Zoom. Register at https://tiny.utk.edu/CC_Gaitors2022.
On November 17, Beau Gaitors, assistant professor of history, will give a public talk on "African Descendants in Mexican History.”
In the 2020 Mexican census more than 2.5 million people self-identified as African descendant. Reporters attributed this number to recent arrivals from West Africa and the Caribbean without reflecting on the vast presence in the colonial and early independence periods. This talk engages archival examples to illuminate African descendants’ crucial roles in Mexico history, providing a better understanding of their presence today.
About the Speaker: Beau D.J. Gaitors is an assistant professor in the UT Department of History. He is a historian of Latin America with research and teaching emphasis on the economic, political, and social impacts of African descendants in nineteenth and early twentieth-century Latin America after the abolition of slavery. Prior to coming to UT, he was an assistant professor of history at Winston-Salem State University. Gaitors received his Ph.D. in Latin American history in 2017 from Tulane University, his M.A. in history from Purdue University in 2010, and his B.A. in Africana studies and international relations from Brown University in 2008.
Conversations & Cocktails is a free public lecture series hosted by the UT Humanities Center, which showcases the original research of our distinguished University of Tennessee arts and humanities faculty. Our monthly talks give you the opportunity to hear about fascinating and groundbreaking work in the arts and in fields such as philosophy, history, and literary studies. Presentations are 30-40 minutes long and are designed for the general public. A spirited question-and-answer discussion follows each presentation. Details on this season’s program are available at humanitiescenter.utk.edu/public/cocktails. Union Ave Books: An Author Event featuring Laurie Brock
Category: Free event, Lecture, panel and Literature, spoken word, writing
Episcopal priest, author, and equestrian Rev. Laurie Brock shares more wisdom from the saddle with God, Grace, and Horses. The institutional church is too often filled with doctrine, words, and beliefs that overwhelm people of faith and non-church goers alike. And yet, humans are drawn to the sense of awe, the comfort, and the challenges to be found in a life of faith. By grounding faith in the inspiring presence of horses, Brock finds and shares a most relatable experience of God. She likens the rooted relationship between humans and horses with our deep love of God. In this exploration of relationship and practical spirituality, Brock gives us a whole new way to speak to God.
Come hear Bishop Brian Cole in conversation with Rev. Laurie Brock on Thursday, November 17, at 7:00 pm in-person and livestreaming from The Episcopal Church of the Ascension, Knoxville. All are invited to attend in-person and online. The event is presented free of charge.
Laurie M. Brock is an Episcopal priest and attorney with roots in Alabama and Mississippi. Upon moving to Kentucky over a decade ago, she realized she needed a hobby. A call to a riding lesson barn later, she found a passion and life in horses. Horses teach her about God and provide endless opportunities for laughter and learning. Laurie also serves as a crisis chaplain, retreat leader, and speaker (especially when she can work with horses), and is the author of the popular Horses Speak of God.
Copies of the book may be ordered through Union Ave. Books, a local, independent bookseller of Knoxville, Tennessee. This event is hosted by the Episcopal Diocese of East Tennessee and Spiritus Knox, a ministry of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension and coordinated by the Rev. Caroline Vogel. God, Grace, and Horses as well as Horses Speak of God are published through Paraclete Press.

UT Arboretum Society: The Mammals of Tennessee
Category: Free event, Lecture, panel, Science, nature and Virtual
“THE MAMMALS OF TENNESSEE” VIRTUAL PROGRAM THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 17, PRESENTED BY THE UT ARBORETUM SOCIETY
Everyone has a favorite mammal, and we have many in Tennessee. Join the University of Tennessee Arboretum Society’s virtual program with naturalist Don Hazel on Thursday, November 17, 7 p.m. EST as we learn about the amazing mammals in our state, from chipmunks, otters, and armadillos to bears, bobcats, and wild boars.
“Mammals are particularly interesting to us, maybe because we humans are mammals,” said Hazel. “From this session, you will get a great overview of our Tennessee mammals. We will also have a question-and-answer period at the end of the session. What is your favorite mammal?”
Don and his wife Nancy are retired and have lived in Fairfield Glade, near Crossville Tennessee for 16 years. Having a life-long interest in nature, Don writes a twice-monthly nature column for the Glade Sun and Crossville Chronicle newspapers. He is the president of the Tennessee Bluebird Society, a member of the Friends of the Trails organization, and president of the Fairfield Glade Fly Fishing Club.
The program is free and closed captioning is available, but registration is required to receive the Zoom link and recording. Register at www.utarboretumsociety.org. Please contact UT Arboretum Education Coordinator, Michelle Campanis, at mcampani@utk.edu with any questions or registration issues.
