Free Event!
Monday, November 7 | 12pm
We are pleased to welcome you to the Theatre to enjoy a live concert featuring House Organist Freddie Brabson on the Tennessee Theatre’s Mighty Wurlitzer. Freddie will be joined on stage by Shayla McDaniel. Shayla McDaniel is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist crafting guitar-driven alt pop right here in Knoxville. The laidback artist's honeyed vocals and indie pop-rock hit that sweet spot between major and minor tonalities with a pan-genre appeal. Pristine vocals, breezy pop grooves, big hooks, and soaring melodies contribute to her pop allure. Her music has been featured on MTV's "Siesta Key" and more. She performed at the 2017 Rhythm N' Blooms Music & Arts Festival alongside a lineup that included Young the Giant, Dave Barnes, Gogol Bordello, Birds of Chicago, and others. She has given live in-studio performances and her music has aired on WUTK 90.3 FM, WDVX 89.9 FM, WOZO 103.9 FM, and more. UT Humanities Center Distinguished Lecture Series: Change and Choice: Eight Modern Women

On November 7, Anne Fernald, a professor of English and Women’s Studies at Fordham University, will give a talk on "Change and Choice: Eight Modern Women."
In the early twentieth century, middle class women’s lives were defined by constraint. Yet from the late-nineteenth century into the first decades of the twentieth, social and legal changes also opened a broad array of choices for women. This lecture will explore women’s lives a hundred years ago, the dramatic changes in their world, and the hard choices that women of the time faced. Anne Fernald will discuss these changes and choices through the stories of several women writers: the American children’s book author Margaret Wise Brown, Chinese-American writer Eileen Chang, Jamaican broadcaster and poet Una Marson, British pacifist Vera Brittain, film director Dorothy Arzner, and American editor and novelist Jessie Fauset, who discovered and championed many of the most important writers of the Harlem Renaissance. Fernald’s subjects used art to tell stories that bristle with the possibilities and dangers of women negotiating a life path more adventurous, interesting, and varied than predicted. These writers were wanderers, rebels, ladies, or pioneers; each was talented, but none so talented that she did not care what others thought or did not feel the sting of choosing to go against the grain of expectations. Virginia Woolf’s words form a common thread; her reflections on the challenges of women’s lives bring these stories together.
The lecture is free and open to the public and is held on the UT Knoxville campus. Public parking is available in the Volunteer Hall parking garage for our off-campus visitors. Everyone is welcome!

The Emporium Center: Ted Richards: Anthology II
Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event
The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present five new exhibitions at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from November 4-26, 2022. A free reception with the artists will take place on Friday, November 4, from 5:00-9:00 PM and features live music inside the Emporium by Shayla McDaniel. Most of the works will be for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition by visiting in person or the online shop at www.knoxalliance.store.
Anthology II is the second installment of a look at the past few decades of my work. I picked this collection to highlight some of my personal favorites, because they are visually appealing, remind me of a special adventure, or represent a significant point in my artistic journey. Viewing art is always personal; it helps to have a nugget of insight into its development, and thus I have provided the audience with access to audio files of my commentary on each painting.
Ted Richards was born in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains, has resided in New Jersey's Ramapo Mountains, and now calls the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee home. His interest in art began as an adolescent and has focused on painting in acrylics for over 40 years. He enjoyed a successful career in Information Technology and incorporates his analytical abilities into the creative development process. Richards enjoys sharing memorable moments from his life's adventures through his work; incorporating elements of color theory, he uses bold, expressive color on large canvases to convey the mood of the experience. Whether he employs a fresh approach to realism or ventures into abstraction, he invites the viewer to join him on his journey. His work has been featured in both group and solo exhibitions in Northern New Jersey and Eastern Tennessee.
