French pianist Philippe LeJeune is a perfect example of the mixture of jazz and blues which was especially an important strain in the jazz tradition. The young pianist attended in 1968 a concert in Reims (France) by master boogie woogie and blues pianist singer Memphis Slim, and immediately put an end to his classical efforts and began teaching himself piano blues, scouring local record shops fort LP's by boogie woogie greats. In 1980 he was invited by Memphis Slim himself - who had been a Parisian citizen since 1962 - to cut an album titled "Dialog In Boogie" as a piano duet.

Knoxville History Project: History Happy Hour - Cormac McCarthy at 90

Category: Free event, History, heritage, Lecture, panel and Virtual

with Bill Hardwig and Wes Morgan
Thursday, July 20 at 6:00 p.m. on Zoom

The Knoxville-raised author of Suttree, Blood Meridian, The Orchard Keeper, No Country for Old Men, The Road, and The Passenger died last month, just a few weeks before he would have turned 90--on July 20, the date of our monthly program. Like few men his age, he was still very much in the news, with not one but two new novels out, both eliciting international interest, as well as rumors of another major movie deal concerning one of his most memorable novels. We’ll welcome two experts on the subject, both of whom have taught at Cormac’s alma mater: UT English professor and author Bill Hardwig, who has an upcoming book about the author’s prose style, and retired UT psychology professor Wes Morgan, who is the leading authority of what’s real in McCarthy’s East Tennessee books. For this wide-ranging discussion of McCarthy’s legacy, we’ll include some slides, including some historical images we’ve never shown in public before, of real Knoxville places McCarthy described, paired with his actual descriptions in novels.

Free program with food and beverages available for purchase.

Appalachian Arts Craft Center: Meet the Artist: Nancy Shedden

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Fine Crafts and Free event

Join us on Thursday, July 20 from 4:30PM-5:30PM to meet the artist, Nancy Shedden, Handspinning. Ask questions, look at her beautiful handspun yarns, and enjoy light refreshments.

A little about Nancy:
"I owe my interest in beautiful wool yarns (and needle-felting) to my two beautiful farm girls, Abby and Magen, who fell in love with the Knox County 4-H Sheep Project. Who would have ever have thought Knoxville and the surrounding area had so many shepherds. We joined the sheep project in February 1999. and from that time, with one little lamb, my youngest daughter found her passion in life. As time went on and our flock increased yearly, I knew something had to be done with the wool. I started out with needle-felting which was fun and always drew a crowd at the sheep shows and fairs. In 2007 I joined the Tennessee Valley Hand Spinners and found my real passion – creating beautiful yarns. Most of the fibers I use come from fiber fairs held throughout the year; some come from my own Cotswold ewe. It is fun to pick beautiful, blended fibers and see what spinning will produce. I use various fibers such as wools, alpaca, llama, silk, angora (rabbit), mohair (Angora goat), seacell (seaweed), and then the fun stuff like Angelina, firestar, and glitz or beads which add some pizazz. I am a juried member of the Appalachian Arts Craft Center and the Foothills Craft Guild. I am proud of my craft and hope you enjoy knitting or crocheting with my yarns."

Free and open to the public! Appalachian Arts Craft Center, 2716 Andersonville Highway, Clinton, TN. Hours: M-Sa 10-6, Su 1-5. Information: 865-494-9854, www.appalachianarts.net

“Dance of the Mythmakers” is the third and final exhibition in the 2023 Summer Alumni Exhibition Series in Pellissippi State Community College’s Bagwell Center for Media and Art Gallery. The show features work by Kevin Krieps and Jana Ghezawi. Both went on to finish their studies at the University of Tennessee.

“Krieps’ and Ghezawi’s work is a combination of traditional pop-influenced painting along with installation,” said Professor Herb Rieth, who curated the exhibit. “There is a strong component of goofy, noodley fun, mystery and, as stated in the title, Mythmaking.”

“Dance of the Mythmakers” will be on display through Friday, Aug. 11, with a closing reception with the artists tentatively planned for 4 p.m. Thursday, July 27.

Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and all exhibits are free and open to the public.
