McClung Museum: In Conversation: Will Wilson

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Free event and History, heritage

The McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is proud to announce that it will bring the acclaimed exhibition, In Conversation: Will Wilson, to the local community. With over $35,500 in grant support, the museum will feature the powerful works of Diné (Navajo) photographer Will Wilson in a moving exhibition exploring the importance of self-representation.

In Conversation: Will Wilson opens at the McClung Museum on August 18 and will include a range of engaging programming for both the university and the Knoxville community. The exhibition was made possible through Art Bridges, a foundation created by philanthropist Alice Walton that is focused on expanding access to American art. Showcasing 17 portraits from Wilson’s Critical Indigenous Photographic Exchange project, the exhibition is dedicated to capturing a contemporary perspective of Native North America. In Conversation: Will Wilson challenges viewers to think critically about how Native peoples have been portrayed in photography over time. Through portraiture, Wilson responds directly to the works of early 20th-century photographer Edward Sheriff Curtis (1869–1952). Curtis’ photographs simplified and romanticized Native American life, whereas Wilson has created rich, complex portraits from Indigenous perspectives. Visitors to the exhibition will witness some of Wilson's portraits come to life through an augmented reality app, providing an interactive experience known as "Talking Tintypes."

In Conversation: Will Wilson is organized by Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, and curated by Mindy Besaw, Curator of American Art/Director of Fellowships & Research from Crystal Bridges, and Ashley Holland, Associate Curator from Art Bridges.

  • August 18, 2023
  • 5:30PM - 8:30PM

Category: Culinary arts, food, Festivals, special events, Fundraisers, History, heritage and Music

We very truly appreciate your support, sponsorship, interest and help, making it possible for the Suffrage Coalition, Inc. to continue to locate and preserve the history of Woman Suffrage, especially in Tennessee. We will be having this year’s annual fundraiser on August 18th—the actual date of the historic vote that that made Tennessee the proud final, critical vote that enfranchised women in this country. Crowne Plaza downtown will be the venue.

Plans for this year include a suffrage fashion show that will highlight not only the fashions themselves, but also the role that fashion played in the anti-suffrage propaganda, and the compromises the suffragists chose to make because of the fashion issues.
Candace Corrigan (who wrote and produced A Vote of Her Own and How Southern Women Won the Vote) will join us with songs that were actually used in the suffrage campaign. There may even be a bit of a sing-along!

We will have a silent auction, special displays and more.

Knox County Public Library: Clarence Brown Film Festival

  • August 16, 2023 — August 20, 2023

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Film, Free event and History, heritage

The Knox County Public Library is pleased to announce the Clarence Brown Film Festival, set for August 16-20, 2023, in various locations in downtown Knoxville. All events will be free and open to the public. The festival aims to re-introduce Knoxville native and famed director Clarence Brown (1890-1987) to modern audiences through screenings of Brown’s most iconic films, film talks, tours, and more.

The Festival will screen seven of Brown's most iconic works, including an outdoor presentation of National Velvet (1944) and a screening of The Yearling (1946). Most notably, the Festival will present a recently restored 35mm film print of The Signal Tower (1924). This restored film has only been shown at two other venues. Our screening will feature live musical accompaniment at the Historic Tennessee Theatre.
