Ijams and Appalachian Mountain Bike Club: Big Fun Tuesday

Ijams and Appalachian Mountain Bike Club invite you to the last Big Fun Tuesday (BFT) of the year at Mead's Quarry! These events happen every first Tuesday from May-October. BFT is a night to hang with your friends, hit the trails on your mountain bike or on foot, rent a paddleboard or kayak from River Sports Outfitters, or simply enjoy great local music! This month features the music from jaqhoney!

This month the Knoxville Entrepreneur Center will be hosting their Made for Knoxville Meetup as part of this event. Made For Knoxville Meet-Ups are a perfect, low-stakes way to meet other entrepreneurs here in Knoxville. There's no agenda, no speakers, just an opportunity to meet and mingle with other people creating businesses in our town. From bakers to tech start-ups, retail stores owners to product designers- there will be an excitingly diverse group of innovators with one thing in common: We are #madeforknoxville.

The festivities at Mead's Quarry will happen between 5:00-8:00pm. Floyd's Snack Shack will be on property with all the delicious dining options this month and the Ijams concession area and beer garden will be open for food/drink needs. This is a FREE event for all ages. Grab your friends and family, and come to the quarry for fresh air and fun! No registration required. NOTE: Big Fun Tuesdays are weather-dependent and may be canceled due to rain. Plans will be announced on this page and on the Facebook event page.

Matías Pedrana began his musical studies in his native Argentina at the age of 13, later entering the National University of Rosario to study classical flute. In the year 2000 he moved to Europe to continue his career as a musician, picking up the bandoneón as a new instrument and receiving his degree from the Rotterdam conservatorium-The Netherlands. He has shared the stage and performed with many well-known artists and ensembles such as: "Orquesta Tipica OTRA", "Guardia Cadenera", "Nueva Manteca", "Motion Unlimited Cinematic Orchestra", "Het Gelders Orkest", "Tango Extremo", "Ben Van Den Dungen", "Grupo del Sur", "Hernan Ruiz". He has toured around the world and played in many important festivals: "Aruba Jazz Festival", "Barquisimeto Jazz Festival", "Den Haag Jazz Festival", "Dublin Tango Festival", "Grachten festival", among others. He is currently member of "José Lopretti ensemble" and the quintet "Grupo del Sur", performing in well known theaters and festivals through all The Netherlands. He has participated in CD productions by Gotan Project "Gotan project Live", "Toujours Bizarre" by Tango Extremo and "Ser" by Isa Bornau. Recently he has recorded a CD with the quintet "Grupo del Sur" called: "Inspiración", performing the music of Astor Piazzolla as well as arrangements made by members of the group. The CD was recorded live at the Concertgebow in Amsterdam.

Pellissippi State: Todos Somos Familia (We Are All Family)

Family festivals, musical performances and guest speakers are among the events Pellissippi State Community College has planned for Hispanic Heritage Month – and all are free and open to the public. Themed “Todos Somos Familia” (We Are All Family), Hispanic Heritage Month at the college will celebrate the rich and beautiful complexity of Latino and Hispanic culture at Pellissippi State as well as recognize the importance of the contributions of Latino and Hispanic culture to the local community and the world.

Keynote speakers Karen Ocon-Mora, community schools site coordinator for Knox County, and Megan Barolet-Fogarty, director of youth and family engagement for Centro Hispano de East Tennessee, will kick off the month’s festivities Tuesday, Sept. 19, with an address on “Familia: Relationships and Resilience in Latino Culture.” The event will be held 10:30-11:15 a.m. in the Goins Building Auditorium on Pellissippi State’s Hardin Valley Campus, 10915 Hardin Valley Road, and livestreamed on Zoom.

Families have two opportunities to come out to Pellissippi State for festivals including games, activities, food and a screening of the film “Encanto” at sunset: 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, on the college’s Hardin Valley Campus and again 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, on Pellissippi State’s Strawberry Plains Campus, 7201 Strawberry Plains Pike

And don’t miss a lively performance by Knoxville’s own Latin jazz band Candela on Wednesday, Sept. 27, in the Hardin Valley Campus Courtyard. Candela will play 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m., and refreshments will be served.
