UT Downtown Gallery: Jorge Lucero Study Collection

Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event

The Gallery is open on the First Friday of every month from 5-9pm as part of Downtown Knoxville’s First Friday Art Walk
FRIDAY, November 3, 5 - 9PM
FRIDAY, December 1, 5 - 9PM

The JORGELUCEROSTUDYCOLLECTION is a modest art library and ephemera archive assembled by Mexican-American artist and educator Jorge Lucero during his various teaching appointments across the American midwest. Most of the time the STUDYCOLLECTION is housed at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and it is open to the public once a week when classes are in session. Browsing, study, quiet reading, sitting, and open discussion is encouraged during a visit to the STUDYCOLLECTION.

The STUDYCOLLECTION is non-circulating. It is the primary mission of the STUDYCOLLECTION to be a forum for conviviality, especially over these unique items within this particular place and time, therefore its holdings are rarely lent individually. In 2017, the STUDYCOLLECTION was borrowed in its entirety by the University of North Texas for the duration of their Spring semester. The University of Tennessee is only the second institution or person to perform this gesture.

THEJORGELUCEROSTUDYCOLLECTION holds no special events other than the singular event of being open during its designated time each week. Visitors to the STUDYCOLLECTION have made reasonable suggestions about specific public events that could potentially increase the number of visitors and the visibility of the STUDYCOLLECTION (e.g. public readings, organized discussions, screenings or listening events, etc.). Although these suggestions are appreciated and understood as coinciding with other models of how similar spaces are normally participated in, the mission of the STUDYCOLLECTION is not necessarily to be consumed en masse or to provide purposeful entertainment of any sort. The staff of the STUDYCOLLECTION is perfectly at ease with nothing (or the appearance of nothing) happening during the open times of the STUDYCOLLECTION.

Lucero’s exhibition is presented by the UT Downtown Gallery in collaboration with the Tennessee Art Educators Association annual conference. Funding is generously provided by the Arts & Culture Alliance, Knox County, the Department of the Treasury, Tennessee Art Educators Association, the East Tennessee STEM Hub, and UTK co-sponsors from the Center for Enhancing Education in Mathematics and Sciences and the Department of Theory & Practice in Teacher Education.

Location: The UT Downtown Gallery, 106 S. Gay Street
Times: W-F: 11am - 6pm, Sat: 10am - 3pm

Knoxville Children's Theatre: Sense and Sensibility

Category: Kids, family, Literature, spoken word, writing and Theatre

Knoxville Children’s Theatre presents a live production of “Sense & Sensibility.” The play is based on the novel by Jane Austen and is one of the classic novels featured on the reading list for most high schools in the area (including Knox County Schools.) The play will be performed October 27th - November 12th, Thursdays and Fridays at 7 PM, Saturdays at 1 PM, and Sundays at 3 PM.

In this adaption of the classic Jane Austen novel “Sense & Sensibility”, two sisters, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood find themselves bound by the trials of life and love. When unexpected misfortunes befall their family, the sisters endure passion and heartbreak while navigating the unforgiving social conventions of Regency England. “Sense and Sensibility” is an enthralling tale of romance, resilience, and the undying bond between sisters. The play features many of Austen’s unforgettable characters, including Willoughby, Fanny, Lucy, Edward, Colonel Brandon and more. The play is performed by 14 talented young actors and designed by 10 talented young designers from ages 9 to 17.

The show is directed by Academy Director Emily Helton. Knoxville Children's Theatre, 109 E. Churchwell Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37917. Information: 865-208-3677, www.knoxvillechildrenstheatre.com

Knoxville History Project: Walking Tour of Historic UT Campus

Category: History, heritage

Walking Tour of Historic UT Campus with the Knoxville History Project,
Friday, October 27 at 6:00 p.m.

Located on a river peninsula, the University of Tennessee’s campus is an unheralded but fascinating historical site. Established on Knoxville’s steepest hill during the early Jacksonian Era, the college became a battleground in 1863, but its existing buildings reflect evolving architectural styles and hosted lectures by Carl Sandburg and Eleanor Roosevelt, and concerts by Frank Sinatra and Nina Simone. These old brick buildings also reflect the decisive years of a few legendary alumni, from groundbreaking Hollywood director Clarence Brown to Pulitzer-winning novelist Cormac McCarthy. There’s also a century-old gridiron with history you can read from outside, the exotic stories behind a diverse array of statues, and Circle Park, which may be much older than you may assume.

In a 90-minute walk, historian Jack Neely will tell UT’s stories. The tour starts outside Hodges Library on the corner of Volunteer Boulevard and Melrose Avenue.

Tickets are $15.00 per person. Purchase tickets at https://knoxville-history-project.square.site/

Parking: We recommend the official Vol Hall Parking Garage on White Avenue (three blocks from Hodges Library). Parking tickets from that garage only are eligible to be validated by UT after the tour.

This walking tour is presented in partnership between the Knoxville History Project and University of Tennessee Libraries.
