Jubilee Community Arts: Dori Freeman
Category: History, heritage and Music
Jubilee Community Arts presents Dori Freeman at the Laurel Theater, February 8 at 8 pm.
Dori Freeman has sharpened her vision of Appalachian Americana over five studio albums. From the country traditionalism of her self-titled debut to the amplified folk of Ten Thousand Roses, it's a sound that nods to her mountain-town roots even as it reaches beyond them.
"I grew up in a family that played a lot of traditional music, but my dad played a lot of other types of music for me, too," says Freeman, who grew up in rural Galax, Virginia. "I'd go fiddler's conventions, but I'd also watch my dad play jazz, swing, country, and rock & roll. He was a big fan of singer-songwriters. I think that variety has a lot to do with the way my own songwriting has developed."
Her latest album Do You Recall offers a closer look at Dori Freeman's brand of expansive Americana. It's an album that both reaffirms her roots and reaches past them, exploring the sounds and stories that lay between traditional formats. Freeman does her best work in those gray areas, bringing her own color to a sound that's varied, versatile, and unmistakably her own. She's still proud of her Appalachian heritage. With Do You Recall, though, she's making her own traditions.
This show is one of a series of singer songwriter performances sponsored by Bill Alexander in memory of Malcolm Holcombe.

All of us have an inner voice. For artists, that voice constantly whispers “create”, and one of the best ways to ignite the creative spark is through collaboration. In this spirit of camaraderie and creativity, three artists come together as “Three Dames” to exhibit their work: Linda Blair, Cheryl Massey (Cherdo) and Marcia Shelly (Maru) showcase their talents across various media, including watercolor, acrylic, pastel, and ink.
Dame Linda Blair shares this about their unique partnership, “We created Three Dames a few years ago to enjoy the advantages of exhibiting collectively. We each lean towards watermedia, which naturally allows our work to be a cohesive display.”
Dame Cheryl Massey (Cherdo) is a self-taught artist driven by an unwavering passion for art, creativity, and a dedicated commitment to lifelong learning. Whether actively engaged in creating art, exploring diverse artistic mediums, or drawing inspiration from a myriad of sources, her love for creativity establishes a profound connection with the artistic world. Identifying as a lifelong enthusiast of paint, pencil, and pastels, she proudly describes herself as a perpetual cheerleader for creativity. https://www.studiocherdo.com
Dame Marcia Shelly, recognized by the signature “Maru”, specializes in vibrant colorful paintings that have captured the attention of admirers throughout the U.S. and internationally. She sees art as a wonderful puzzle, finding the key to balance, color, depth and composition and making them fit together. https://www.maruarts.net

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present five new exhibitions at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville opening on Friday, February 7, from 5:00-9:00 PM. A free gathering with the exhibiting artists will also feature live music by Ella Pinchok and Friends.
Aad Berlijn's inspiration comes from memories, experiences, and observations of everyday reality, which he zooms in on until an internalized image emerges. The drawings encourage fantasy and association.
Aad Berlijn (1948) lives alternately in Amsterdam and Knoxville. He has created paintings and drawings for over 40 years. In Amsterdam, Berlijn enjoys the social life and paints in his studio. In the quieter American city of Knoxville, he focuses on sketches and drawings. A storyteller at heart, he draws inspiration from the art world and his personal experiences, which results in accessible works of art with clear painting principles. His paintings often feature depth and a blend of abstract and figurative elements. His work is included in the collections of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands.
