OS·SU·AR·Y (OSH-OO-ER-EE) | NOUN: REPOSITORY OF BONES | FROM LATIN, FIRST KNOWN USE 1658
Three hundred artists have contributed to this Ossuary. Their work, in many media, includes single bones, clusters of bones, and art works inspired by, using, or playing with the idea of bones. These bones are political statements and personal elegies, memorials to individuals and statements about mortality. They represent connections to our ancestors and/or to our descendants. Some works are serious and some use bones in a completely playful manner. Ossuary was developed in response to the repositories of bones that have accured in countries like Cambodia and Rwanda, but Ossuary is not a project about those traumas. Rather, Ossuary offers a poignant counter-images to mass violence. it is a project about the hope that art brings. Images and statements for all the bone works from this iteration can be found online at www.ossuaries.net.

Ossuary is a cummulative traveling project. It began in Madison, Wisconsin and will go next to Indianapolis, Indiana. Artists interested in contribution bones to future exhibitions should write to ossuaries@gmail.com. This relational project was initiated and developed by the artist Laurie Beth Clark. Clark, who is a Professor in the Art Department, has shown work in galleries, museums, theatres, and public spaces in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition of oil paintings by Clarksville artist Terri Jordan on display October 4-26, 2013 in the Emporium. The suite of paintings, entitled “Romantic Notions”, brings together Jordan’s signature women with decorative floral backdrops. Her modern-day girls are dramatically paired with some of the most deadly flowers and plants found in everyday life, which adds a sense of vulnerability to their otherwise strong presence. The month of October would have been the 14th birthday of Jordan’s niece, who was killed in June of 2012. Jordan will donate a percentage of sales from this exhibition to the purchase of holiday gifts for patients of East Tennessee Children’s Hospital in celebration of her niece’s memory.

“Romantic Notions” by Terri Jordan will be displayed from October 4-26, 2013 on the North Wall of the Balcony at the Emporium Center, 100 S. Gay Street, downtown Knoxville. A public reception will take place on Friday, October 4, from 5:00-9:00 PM with chocolate fondue provided by the Melting Pot of Knoxville. The First Friday reception also features music by The Porch Pickers from 6:00-8:00 PM and a Jazz Jam Session hosted by Vance Thompson and Friends in the Black Box Theatre from 7:00-9:00 PM. The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition of recent work by Deborah Bowen opening Friday, October 4, at 5:00 PM in the display case of the Emporium Center. The upcoming exhibition will be Bowen’s first opportunity to show her work. She will be showing a variety of pieces including paintings, jewelry and journals.

The Ewing Gallery of Art and Architecture is pleased to present two collage exhibitions in November. Remix: Selections from the International Collage Center and Richard Meier: Selected Collage Works will open Monday, November 4 with a reception in the Ewing Gallery at 6:30.

Prior to the lecture, ICC founder and New York gallerist, Pavel Zoubok will deliver a lecture on the history of collage -- "Collage Culture: From Picasso to Facebook." The lecture will begin at 5:30Pm in room 109 of the Art and Architecture building on the UT campus.

Remix presents the work of over 100 artists drawn from the ICC's permanent lending and research collection alongside further loans from prominent artists. Remix weaves the narrative of collage through the history of modern and contemporary art. Coined in the early 20th century from the French word coller, meaning to glue or stick, the term collage originally described a revolutionary method of art-making. Over time its definition has expanded to represent an approach to and perception of the modern world. The 100 artists featured in the exhibition utilize collage's core conceptual traits—heterogeneity, fragmentation and appropriation—to address with clarity and immediacy the circumstances of their times. Remix explores the impact of collage on artistic and cultural expression and gathers together the diverse fragments of a rich artistic tradition.

Richard Meier: Selected Collage Works is a presentation of 20 recent works. They are a collaboration between Meier and Master Printer, Gary Lichtenstein. The images are 11 color silkscreens of original Meier collages with one-of-a-kind collage and drawing on top of the prints.

Knoxville Artist Jered Sprecher’s paintings, drawings and installations focus on the “fleeting images and objects that surround us,” according to the artist. An associate professor in the University of Tennessee’s School of Art, Sprecher received his bachelor of arts degree from Concordia University in Nebraska and a master of fine arts degree from the University of Iowa. His work has been exhibited at The Drawing Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Urban Institute for Contemporary Art, Chinati Foundation, Irish Museum of Modern Art, Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Des Moines Art Center and Espai d'art Contemporani de Castelló. In 2009, he was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship. Most recently, he was the artist-in-residence at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas.

The guest performers for the James A. Dick Mighty Musical Monday Program will be vocalists Edie Yeager and Tracy Ward. FREUD'S LAST SESSION centers on legendary psychoanalyst Dr. Sigmund Freud, who invites a young, little-known professor, C.S. Lewis, to his home in London. Lewis, expecting to be called on the carpet for satirizing Freud in a recent book, soon realizes Freud has a much more significant agenda. On the day England enters World War II, Freud and Lewis clash on the existence of God, love, sex and the meaning of life – only two weeks before Freud chooses to take his own.

Enjoy a concert by the Maryville Area Dulcimer Club on Monday, November 4, at 7 p.m. at the Blount County Public Library.

With a mix of 40 men and women of varied ages, walks of life and skill levels, the Dulcimer Club participants enjoy playing a variety of music: fiddle tunes, hymns, gospel, waltzes, Celtic, and Appalachian. Members primarily play the mountain dulcimer; however just about any instrument is welcomed. The club membership plays ban jammers (mountain dulcimer & banjo combo), hammered dulcimers, violins, guitars, mandolins, autoharps, and upright basses. Various members of the club or the club as a whole have put on concerts for community festivals and clubs, nursing and assisted living homes, and church gatherings.

The Play List for the library concert on November 4 will include fiddle tunes, Veterans’ Day recognition, waltzes, hammer dulcimer solo, Celtic tunes, dulcimer trio, Civil War songs, more fiddles of another kind and gospel.

Free and open to the public, the program is sponsored by the Blount County Public Library, located at 508 N. Cusick Street, Maryville.

In January 1788, the first of the British prison ships arrive at Botany Bay, Australia and settle the penal colony at Port Jackson, the site of current-day Sydney. Many of the prisoners have committed minor crimes and their wardens are military men who fought and lost the war against the American colonies. When hope and supplies run low, a lieutenant tries to increase morale by staging a comedy using the convicts as the cast. Based on real events, this award-winning drama is an evocative look at a moment in history--the founding of a nation--and an inspiring tale about the transforming power of theatre. This production is directed by Calvin MacLean and is recommended for high school and up. It contains strong language and brief nudity.
